I heard that most restaurants expect 18-20% tip. But since a lot of cheap people go to Chinese restaurants because Chinese food is expected to be cheaper than other cusines, are they ok with 10-12% tip? The reason I ask is because whenever I go to Chinese restaurants my relatives, they always tip about 10%. But we always go to the same one and the waitress and owner are always
happy to see us.
The restaurant you frequent is surely a front for a more profitable venture

I don't tip less because it's cheaper than other cuisines, I tip less because the service sucks.

Depends how fancy it is but short of it being a buffet then a normal tip is usual plus there are plenty of cheaper restaurants around here then Chinese as they are rarer here and never view it as the cheaper place to eat.
I think people tip badly because waiters at chinese restaurants tend to not be personable at all. But the Chinese being the Chinese, I think they're happy to even have tips. Although, many of the waitresses you see in these places are compensated mainly from tips and are indebted in coming here.
Are we talking about a buffet that simply fills a drink order or are your ordering off a menu with full service. If all they do is bring a drink and take an empty plate here or there then 12% probably isn't the wost thing they see in a day. If its full service then that's pretty crappy. Tipping 15-20% at any full service restaurant is more like it. The total tip is adjusted by the
food price, you shouldn't lower your percentage just because of the type cuisine.
So i just want to make sure, is 18-20% really the standard or not for most restaurants?

Of course. Only a fool would think that you should tip people equally regardless of race.

I tip White people restaurants more for some reason.
I never tip in chinatown because the tips all go back to the owner (of the restaurant and the staff). The staff work there until their debt is paid off, which is measured in years, not dollars, so it only pisses them off when you leave a tip. Feb 8, 2000 18,829 184 106
10% is fine... 20+ years of experience.
If it's good service i tip 20-25%. If they suck i feel bad and still tip them 12-15%. Chinese buffet around 17-18 dollars for 2 people. Thats only 22 dollars with tip Feb 13, 2001 83,967 18 81

In Toronto, the standard I've seen is 10-15% for Chinese restaurants. that sounds reasonable. at least i know i'm not talking out of my ass right now since people in other places do the same I generally tip 20% at any sit-down restaurant or for delivery unless the service is particularly bad.
I wouldn't tip a smaller percentage. The food is likely cheaper, so the regular percentage will work out to be less money anyway.

I tip the same as any other restaurant.
Is it rude to tip at a Chinese restaurant?Tipping in China is generally uncommon and can even be considered rude or embarrassing in some circumstances so when taking a taxi, enjoying a refreshing drink or tucking into a delicious meal there's no requirement to leave any gratuities. Gratuity is even illegal in airports and some establishments in China!
Are you supposed to leave tip at a Chinese restaurant?Tipping in China Isn't Expected
Mainland China, and most of Asia, don't have a history or culture of tipping — don't spread one! As always, there are a few exceptions. Tipping is more customary in Hong Kong, and leaving gratuity at the end of an organized tour is acceptable.
How much should we tip in Chinese? In most cases, a gratuity of 10%-20% at a Chinese restaurant is acceptable. As you leave your tip, remember that in the eyes of the Chinese, the amount you leave is not a reflection of their level of service…it is a reflection of you and your country.
