Is it easy to drive from NY to Florida?

Wow that would be a long journey I checked on mapquest.com and it's 2776 miles/ 42 hours of continuous driving! Have you considered flying? http://www.jetblue.com do cheapflights from JFK to Florida - might be worth looking in to.

If you stil want to drive have a look at the mapquest route to get some ideas of stop off points.

I live inNew York, but grew up in Orlando. I have done this drive many times.

I would definitely stay in Washington DC for a night. I would suggest staying in Arlington or Alexandria. You can usually get a decent rate with free parking and take the Metro into the city.

It is a long drive from DC to Orlando, but not an impossible one.

On our last trip, we went from DC to Savannah, Georgia and stayed a couple of days there. It was a nice side trip. You could also drive from DC to St. Augustine and stay an extra night there. It is a fun stop too.

What kinds of things are you interested in seeing?

"yeah its only 17hours and we are from aust. so when you drive you get to see more. we will stop overnight in washington. and then continue on..."

This is not like driving the coast in California. The 17 hrs. is only if you go by highway and there is mostly NOTHING on or near this highway. With gas prices at record highs, high drop off fees for one way rentals (you wouldn't be crazy enough to do this trip both ways??) this is REALLY not a good idea. It's easy and cheap to get to DC fromNYC. If you want to see it, do, by train, plane or bus. Airfares between NYC and Orlando are also cheap. If youre' traveling with kids, they will be bored to tears. When you add car rental, gas, overnight stays, food etc. this is a really expensive way to go.

If you are determined to do the drive and have plenty of time, stop at the Jersey shore, stop in Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina. There's evidently a beautiful drive along rte 17 in the Carolinas.

I drove once from NYC to Fla. (to bring my dog, the ONLY reason I would consider this trip) and here are some suggestions:

>leave at the crack of dawn. Driving early is easier than driving late.

>have a cell phone and use it to make reservations so you can be more flexible.

>books on tape are a great way to pass the time. There are restaurants called Cracker Barrel that allow you to "borrow" from them and return at a location down the road. (very clever so you stop at their restaurants).

If you are a proponent of "slow travel" and are just as interested in the journey as you are in the destination, then driving down US 1 and US 13 might be a great trip for you and provide you an opportunity to see the eastern coastal areas of the US. I have done this trip many times (NYC to the Florida border) and have never ceased being amazed at the sheer beauty of the coast from Delaware to Georgia.

These coastal areas are all worth seeing - but you really need to think about this trip in terms of days, not hours. If your goal is just to get to Disneyland, then fly.

Delaware Beaches - Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, and Lewes

Maryland Beaches -- Eastern Shore, and Chesapeake Bay

Virginia Beaches -- Chincoteague, Assateague, Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay

Outer Banks of North Carolina Beaches - - Emerald Isle, Bogue Banks Including, Duck, Nags Head, Avon, Frisco, Hatteras, Ocrakoke, Cape Fear, Topsail, Ocean Isle Beach, and Oak Island

South Carolina Beaches - Hilton Head Island, Kiawah Island, and Pawleys Island

Georgia Beaches - Tybee Island, Cumberland Island, Jekyll Island, Sapelo Island, Sea Island, and St Simons Island

Here's a thread that deiscussed traveling from Georgia to NYC (the reverse of your trip) that you might find helpful.

I absolutely second the recommendations forCharleston (through to Beaufort, where part of Forrest Gump was filmed, and then on to Savannah) and Savannah. I did a roadtrip at Xmas that took me from Charleston to the top of Florida (Fernandina Beach) and then across to Apalachicola and Mobile, Al. Tybee Island is a great spot---Savannah's beach. The "Paradise Highway" down the east coast of Florida is supposed to be quite beautiful though I'd imagine the traffic could be bad at times. I saw the very begining of the Hwy (1A I think) on Amelia Island, where I stayed for two days. Seeing the difference from N. Florida (which looks much like GA and SC, with pine trees and barrier islands) to the tropical Florida everyone is familiar with would be quite interesting, I think. (My next roadtrip, of course)

I drove from Islip NY out to the very end of Long Island 2 weeks ago, to Montauk and back again, and had a great time, but it was off season so not too trafficked. In the summer, I am told it gets pretty bad.

Enjoy your drive wherever you do end up!
