MANCHESTER — As you walk through the doors of the Connecticut’s first Dave & Buster’s Restaurant, you’re immersed in an atmosphere reminiscent of childhood. But Dave & Busters, which is part arcade, part bar, and part restaurant, is a business that wants to separate itself from the label, “the adult Chuck E. Cheese,” General Manager Karl Zarse said Thursday. “We’re much more than that,” Zarse said during a preview of the new location. “We’re an experience, we’re something that’s memorable and unique every time you step through that door.” Dave & Buster’s isn’t a business aimed at kids — it’s a place where adults can go back to their childhood and not feel self-conscious about it, Erin Morrissey, an account executive with Konnect Public Relations, said. “Dave & Buster’s goal is to be the hip young place for young people,” Morrisey said. “The main demographic you see coming in here is 25-34 years old.” Dave and Buster’s cements its status as an adult playground by requiring guests under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a parent or guardian 25 years or older. The Manchester location, which will officially open to the public on Monday at 11 a.m., is a 26,400-square-foot building adjacent to the Shoppes at Buckland Hills mall. Although it has a large arcade area, with over 140 games and a prize area filled with Xboxes, there is also a “360-degree sports bar” with HD TVs on each side and a state-of-the-art sound system. The bar serves regular cocktails and the chain’s signature drinks, which include “The Original Snow Cone” and the “D&B TNTea.” The adjacent sit-down restaurant area, which also features a private room that can be rented out, has a full chef-crafted menu, with items like fire-grilled salmon, nachos, and a teriyaki sirloin. Zarse said that he held more than 2,000 interviews and hired 260 people to staff this location. A former Manchester resident who has opened many restaurants, Zarse said that the days leading up to an opening are filled with training. “We have five days of training leading up to the opening, including a V.I.P., invitation-only event on Saturday,” Zarse said. “Then we just iron things out in the first days and weeks that we’re open.” Hours for the location are Monday and Tuesday, 11 a.m.-12 a.m. and Wednesday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Dave & Buster’s is a place where you can go as an adult to enjoy video and arcade games in a setting that’s more like a sports bar than it is like a children’s arcade. However, there aren’t nearly as many kids here as there are in normal arcades. Most of us feel bad taking up too much time on the video games at normal arcades if kids are around since we feel responsible for letting them enjoy their fun there. This isn’t so much of a problem at Dave & Buster’s. It’s like you get to be the kid again instead of the adult. 3. There’s alcohol. Let’s face it; a lot of adults like to drink. They like to drink while they play video games. It was a brilliant idea to create an arcade that was also a bar. It’s almost like being at a casino except that there’s no smoke in the gaming area and the games are a lot more fun! 4. The food is actually good too. If you’re the kind of person who loves to get a meal in a sports bar then you’ll enjoy what the Dave & Buster’s Restaurant has to offer too. Most adults can’t play video games for hours without grabbing a bite to eat. The fact that the makers of this place thought to include good food is surely a contributing factor to why people like it here so much. 5. They offer great deals and promotions. This place is always running some kind of special deal or promotion. That means that you can don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy a good time here especially if you’re willing to check out their deals and plan in advance. With half-off days and seasonal specials, it’s easy to stick to a budget here. With the economy the way that it is, that’s really important! 6. It’s a happy place. Speaking of the economy, we’re in kind of a depressed time in life right now. Because of that, a lot of adults are seeking out places to enjoy that are filled with life and happiness. Dave & Buster’s offers that kind of environment for you. How depressed can you be playing video games after all?! It’s certainly far more upbeat than the average bar that you’ll find yourself in. 7. It’s a family-friendly place. Despite the fact that there aren’t that many kids here, it’s a family friendly place. It offers a nice atmosphere. The staff is friendly. Dave & Buster’s is a rare exception to that problem. In fact, they specialize in creating great themed parties for adults. Birthday and holiday celebrations are common here. You can even choose to rent out the whole venue if you plan ahead! That is yet another reason that it’s become a popular location. 9. It has become a familiar place. There are Dave & Buster’s locations all over the country. When you mention this bar / arcade, most people know what you’re talking about and have been there themselves. People like to go to places that they know so if they’re on vacation somewhere and they see a Dave & Buster’s then they might stop in there and check it out. 10.
