Show Level Black Bike Week - Dangerous or safe? 8 years ago My husband and I will be coming down May 21 - May 25 and staying at the Myrtle Beach Resort. I just found out it is Black Bike Week. What should we expect, where to visit and when? What to avoid? We were mainly hoping to relax on the beach during the day and visit the boardwalk, skywheel and Broadway at the Beach during the evening. Also, will it be quiet and free of these bikes at the Myrtle Beach Resort? Thank you for your help.
1. Re: Black Bike Week - Dangerous or safe? 8 years ago I just got back from Easter weekend in Myrtle Beach. We did not realize when we booked that there was a rap concert going on at the convention center. Myrtle Beach was so ridiculously crowded that we ended up renting a car and going to Charleston just to get away. Not my idea of a nice vacation. Groups of loud rude people just hanging out in the streets. I live in Chicago and actually felt unsafe in Myrtle Beach. So while I can not speak specifically for the bike week I can tell you my experience was not relaxing, peaceful, or pleasant. First and last time I will ever go to Myrtle Beach. If I want crowds of people just hanging out in the streets, swearing, yelling, and bothering people I will just stay in Chicago. I will never waste my time or money going to Myrtle Beach again. I would also encourage anyone looking for a laid back beach experience or family friendly environment to go somewhere else!!
Level 2. Re: Black Bike Week - Dangerous or safe? 8 years ago Well, the above poster is judging MB after one bad visit while staying at one of the hundreds of hotels that MB has. Myrtle Beach also has like 62 miles of beaches, so if one area does not meet your needs, chances are another will. That being said, back to your original question. If you search this forum, you will see several topics about Black Bike week. If you are able to reschedule another day, I would suggest doing it based on others opinions. If you want to see what it is like, just search YouTube for Myrtle Beach Black Bike Week. You could also avoid the crowds and bikes depending on where you are staying and what you want to do. Again, search this forum or I'm sure others will chime in. Don't judge MB based on this event or what the above poster said. We have been visiting for many years and taking my little one along in the summer. It's a great destination with lots to do.
Level 3. Re: Black Bike Week - Dangerous or safe? 8 years ago Agreed with PantherFan. I am still in North Myrtle Beach after spending Easter weekend here. Yes, it was crowded, but it's spring break and Easter. That's to be expected. Granted I don't stay in the downtown Myrtle Beach area by choice. Try a different area and a different resort. We have been here during both bike weeks and it's been fine. You just need to be aware of what's going on and stay clear of some areas. Myrtle Beach is a beautiful destination and you should not base your experience on one bad stay. If we had, we would have never come back...
Level 4. Re: Black Bike Week - Dangerous or safe? 8 years ago I appreciate everybody's comments. Since we are unfamiliar with Myrtle Beach, I am still wondering if the Myrtle Beach Resort will be near all of this Black Bike Week activity? Are there any areas we should avoid? While we don't mind activity, we are going down to relax on the beach and therefore hoping for a bit of peace and relaxation during the day. Not looking for trouble of drama. Does Black Bike Week occur mainly in Myrtle Beach or N. Myrtle Beach? I have found conflicting information on the internet. Thank you again.

5. Re: Black Bike Week - Dangerous or safe? 8 years ago I am curious as to where karri1229 was staying. My wife and I have been staying at River Oaks condo's while our house is being built and it has been very quiet here, I try to avoid the area from Breakers at 21stN down to a dozen or so blocks past the Sky Wheel.Very crowded and a louder atmosphere. But thats just me.Many people enjoy that area because of so many things they can walk to.I drove past the Convention Center a couple of times last week and did not notice anything unusual. The area from 52N up to 79thN is much quieter. Never been down here for Black Bike Week but have been here for Harley Week.Stayed around 55thN and had no problems. Most of the Black bikers stay around Atlantic Beach area. They have their favorite biker bars and usually avoid the beach.
Level 6. Re: Black Bike Week - Dangerous or safe? 8 years ago We stayed at Myrtle Beach Resort last year in August. I can tell you that Myrtle Beach resort is at the far south end of Myrtle Beach, not in the center of town. The resort is nice, lots to do, and not too far a car ride from either center of town (north) and Murrells Inlet (south). I would definitely recommend Murrells Inlet, lots of great waterfront restaurants. Hope this helps !
Level 7. Re: Black Bike Week - Dangerous or safe? 8 years ago Im local and have lived here for 20 years. Memorial weekend is slam packed full of people similar to July 4th. Both holiday weekends sell out and make driving ridiculous. It does get a little wild and I have seen some things I wish I could forget but I have never felt unsafe. Atlantic Beach (4 or 5 blocks which is located in North Myrtle) will have vendors and activities setup for the bikers but the entire city will be full of people so you will see bikes everywhere you go and lines will be long, traffic will be backed up. Im not being rude or funny but if you are uncomfortable with black people then stay home. Im white and have never had an issue on that weekend, I've met some very nice people and seen some interesting cars and bikes. It does get a little rowdy in some areas so im not sure how appropriate it would be for children. I dont go out into the festivities but thats because the traffic frustrates me, I also dont go July 4th. It will be a little calmer down in the MB Resort area but traveling in the evenings to MB to Broadway or the Skywheel will take forever and put you in the middle of the festivities. If you contact the resort they may let you change your dates with no fee. I hope this helped.
Level 8. Re: Black Bike Week - Dangerous or safe? 8 years ago We have been owner at the resort you named for 16 years. During what is called Black Bike Week you will definitely see and hear a lot of the 2 cycle bikes and a lot of noise. Not as much here at the resort, but still a good bit.I have never felt unsafe. My biggest gripe is that on the beach, somewhat away from the bike noise, it is still pretty loud in that it seems that about every 3rd or 4th person on the beach has a boom box going with different music at a loud level. I can actually hear the surf better sitting on my 5th floor deck, above the noise, than sitting on the beach in the midst of the boom boxes. While I love the resort, if you are looking for a quieter experience, you might want to consider Litchfield or Pawleys Island. A few miles down the road but a world away from the congestion of the Black Bike Week activities..

Level 10. Re: Black Bike Week - Dangerous or safe? 8 years ago Thank you everybody for the information. It sounds like it will be interesting in deed. Good for people watching I'm sure. Dreading the traffic, but wondering if it might be better to hit Broadway at the beach on Wednesday or Thursday night to avoid the weekend bike congestion?
