How to stop hair kinking after straightening

Whether we’re getting ready for the working day or are taking the time to prepare for a night out, many of us turn to straighteners in order to achieve our desired hair style. However, often when we step outside the wind and temperature can take their toll and that sought-after straight hair style becomes unruly once more. So, is there a way to keep hair straight after applying the straighteners? Let’s find out!

Keeping the hair straight

With the right hair care routine and products it is fairly easy to keep your hair straight after styling it. The process usually begins with shampoo and conditioner but if you want to stay in control of your style, it’s important you pick the right type.

To achieve a straight style there are two things to remember: smoothing and nourishing. You want a shampoo and conditioner that’s going to encourage soft, glossy hair as this paves the way nicely for straighteners. Also, a product that makes use of natural ingredients will improve the health of the hair and will help to counteract the damaging effects of heat (say goodbye to breakages and frizz!).

Green People have two products that fulfil both of these requirements in the form of their Daily Shampoo with Aloe Vera and their Daily Conditioner with Aloe Vera. These are suitable for all hair types and are made without any nasty ingredients like parabens and artificial fragrances.

Drying the hair

After washing your hair I bet you swiftly turn to the hair dryer but hang on just a minute – there are a few things you can do first to keep the frizz at bay!

  • Dab your wet hair with a towel rather than wrapping it in a towel or rubbing it harshly. These things encourage frizz and definitely won’t help if you want to keep your hair straight throughout the day
  • When using a hair dryer make sure you’re constantly moving it around your head rather than focusing on one particular spot for a few minutes. Again this will help to prevent both frizz and damage
  • Use a large toothed comb to brush and dry your hair
  • Keep the heat low on your hair dryer to discourage frizz
  • Make sure your hair is completely dry before applying the straighteners

Follow our guide to straightening your hair

I’ve written a whole blog on how to straighten your hair without damaging it so I’d recommend you have a look at this before turning on the straighteners. However, as well as all of these tips there are a few other steps you can take to retain the style you want throughout the day:

  • Straighten your hair at night in preparation for the next day as this gives the hair time to settle into its new style
  • Sleep on silk or satin to discourage tangles from forming in bed
  • Always use heat protection spray to prevent damage and split ends

Opt for argan oil

Speaking of heat protection, one of our favourite hair care products here at the Jan de Vries offices is argan oil which can defend against the high temperatures emitted from straighteners. The problem we often find with argan oil, however, is that it is regularly used in products with a vast array of ingredients alongside it and if you want it to act as a heat protection then you must only use pure argan oil.

Here John Masters come the forefront with their 100% pure Argan Oil. Alongside it’s heat protecting properties, this particular product is also rich in omega 6 and vitamin E which together prevent breakage and encourage smooth, soft hair.

Try hair serum

Once the hair is straight serum can be applied to keep it tidy. Green People’s Quinoa and Avacado Serum can be used as a styling agent and keeps hair in place without weighing it down. This makes it perfect if you’ve just spent ages straightening your hair and don’t want the style to be ruined when you step outside! On top of this however, this particular product is also rich in antioxidants that help to condition and nourish the hair.

Use a defrizzer

A defrizzer also works well when you’re trying to keep your hair straight but there are lots of products on the market here so where should you start looking?

Well, we’re big fans of John Masters here at Jan de Vries and they just happen to do an organic defrizzer that is positively bursting with natural ingredients! This includes jojoba oil, evening primrose oil and rosemary oil which together provide nourishment, whilst also managing frizz and flyaway hairs.

Hairspray

Finally, the last product that can be used to keep your hair straight throughout the day is good old-fashioned hairspray. That being said, a lot of these can leave your hair feeling stiff and may even result in hair that looks greasy too. That’s exactly why I favour John Masters’ Hair Spray as this is made from a gentle, lightweight formula that won’t look sticky. It is ideal for fighting frizz and can even be used on a variety of hair types.

Keeping it straight throughout the day

Despite all the advice I’ve given you on how to maintain a straight hair style, you may want some tips on how to keep it tidy when you’re actually out and about.

  • Use a wide-toothed comb – these will discourage breakage and frizz
  • Try a loose ponytail – if it’s particularly windy this will stop your hair from getting messy.
  • Keep and umbrella handy – I’m sure there has been many a time when your hair has suffered at the hands of bad weather so keep your brolly on hand and don’t be caught out!
