So what youre seeing is perfectly random. What shuffle does is put all of your songs into a playlist in a pseudo-random order. As long as you keep playing, it will play each song only once until it has run through all of them.

Many times I will listen to a certain playlist shuffled, typically through the shuffle button when viewing a playlist or through a Siri command "shuffle Favorites" or something like that. It seems that the shuffled form of the playlist is very similar between listens, so that I typically hear many of the same songs each time for the first 30 minutes to an hour or so of the playlist. These playlists typically have anywhere from 40 to 150 songs.

Is there way to shuffle better either through Apple Music (maybe shuffling twice one time, then three times the next, then once, etc...), or is their a music app that uses a custom shuffling algorithm?

You can ask Siri to turn shuffle on or off. Or you can manually turn shuffle on or off in the Apple Music app.

Question:

How do I get my itunes to actually shuffle on my iphone 11? I have a playlist that has 6 hours of music on it and I work out 4 times per week for just short of 2 hours every time. Despite it being on shuffle I hear the same songs over and over again. Not only do I hear the same songs repeat, they repeat in the same order. I have checked and it is definitely on shuffle, but I just checked my playlist again, and there are songs on there I haven't heard in weeks, and others I have heard about 10 times in that span. How do I get this to work properly?

Thanks for reaching out here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand that your music isn't shuffling on your iPhone 11, and you are hearing the same songs over and over.

I'm glad to help with this.

Try tapping Shuffle again to toggle a different order of songs.

Check to make sure that you don't also have the repeat feature on, as well. This explains more: Repeat and shuffle music

In a playlist or album, you can shuffle songs (play them in random order) or repeat individual songs, playlists or albums.

Open Music for me

In the Music app
on your Mac, do any of the following to play music:
- Stream songs from Apple Music
- Play songs from your library
- Play CDs
Note: A song needs to be playing before you can use shuffle or repeat.
Do any of the following:
- Turn shuffle on: Click the Shuffle button
  in the playback controls.
  
  When shuffle is on, the button changes colour and music plays in random order.
- Shuffle albums or groupings: Choose Controls > Shuffle > Albums (or Groupings). Music plays the songs in the order they appear in the album or in the grouping, and then chooses another album or grouping at random.
- Shuffle the songs in an album: Move the pointer over any album in your library, click the More button
  , then choose Shuffle [album name].
- Repeat all songs in the current view (for example, a playlist): Click the Repeat button
  . Repeat is on when the button changes colour.
- Repeat the currently-playing song: Click the Repeat button until the number 1 appears
  .
- Turn repeat off: Click the Repeat button until the button is grey
  .
