How to maintain tape in hair extensions

We expect so much from hair extensions, yet we don’t always put in the work to take care of them. Hair extensions require work as they are not like our own hair. The better you take care of your tape in hair extensions, the longer they will last.  With our own hair, we have natural oils that keep the hair healthy, but this is not the case with hair extensions. You want to maintain the beautiful quality so you can reuse and re-tape your tape in extensions it is important that you know how to care for tape in hair extensions.

Once hair extensions are cut, they require much more care to make the hair last, especially semi-permanent hair extensions, because these hair extensions are worn everyday.

Here are great tips to care for human hair extensions.  Hair extensions must be cared for daily, you cannot wash and go. We know many girls who have worn our hair extensions for over 1 year and have reused them over and over. The key to their success has been taking care of the hair every day.

1.- How to care for tape in hair extensions: At the apply

Clarifying shampoo BEFORE going to your stylist is KEY. The stylist should also use clarifying shampoo prior to installing the hair extensions. Conditioner should not be used during application of hair.

Wait 48 hours before you shampoo your hair after an application. When you to apply tape in hair extensions, you are going to have to wait at least 48 hours before you can wet or shampoo your hair.

Why? Because they will probably fall out. The tape needs a minimum of 48 hours to completely attach itself to your hair. For the first week be extra careful when you wash it.

2.- How to care for tape in hair extensions: At the clean

Keep your hair extensions clean and untangled by taking time to care for them every day.

Try your best to use sulfate free shampoo and conditioner as well as 100% natural hair products to keep hair extensions in good condition.

is imperative that you use a shampoo and conditioner that do not contain sulfates or parabens. This goes for anyone, but especially if you have tape-in extensions. Sulfates and parabens are chemical detergents used in things like dish soap that are very harsh on your scalp and strip your hair of its natural oils. Tape-ins do not grow from your root, so don’t get the natural oil produced by your scalp. If you strip your extensions of their coating by using the wrong shampoo and conditioner you cut down on their life, dry them out and make them very unmanageable. I used this shampoo and this conditioner for years before extensions and, luckily, they are perfect to use with extensions as well!

Technique Washing your hair with tape-ins is different from washing just your natural hair. You have to be meticulous. It takes longer, but you can do it less often! You should use shampoo everywhere you can. I often lift up my bonds, make sure they’re properly wetted and then gently massage shampoo in-between the layers. Don’t forget under your hair and behind your ears too! You’ll want to rinse the same way you apply – by lifting every layer. Rinsing shampoo from extensions takes about 2X as long as when you don’t have them so make sure to rinse in between every layer! For conditioner, make sure you apply it from mid-shaft down only. I then lightly run the remaining amount over my scalp and thoroughly rinse. Most people advise you not to do this with extensions, but, if I don’t do this, I end up with a tangled mess on top of my head!

Never put conditioner on the roots of your hair. This could make your tape hair extensions slip out. You don’t need conditioner on your roots anyway. This also includes anything that has oil like spray shines.

3.- How to care for tape in hair extensions: At the brushing

Do not comb or brush the hair extensions while hair is wet.

Never sleep with wet hair extensions. Always make sure the hair is dry and pulled up or preferably put into a braid to keep hair from tangling at night.

Brush the hair with a hair extension brush several times a day. Be sure to brush properly, holding the roots to prevent pulling on the bonds. Use a wide tooth comb to remove tangles if needed.

Use high quality hair care products but don’t overdo it, too much hair care product can cause build up and tangling over time. So you want to be careful with the amount of product you use.

Never use any products containing oil, alcohol or ethanol as this can damage the hair extensions and also wear down on the adhesive.

4.- How to care for tape in hair extensions: At the brushing

Dry shampoo is your new best friend. Don’t shampoo your hair every day. What many women don’t know is that extensions absorb a lot the oil your scalp produces. Use a boars hair brush several times a day to help pull this oil through your hair and your hair extensions. Think of this as nature’s hair conditioner.

When your scalp starts to look a little oily use a dry shampoo to help absorb and refresh your scalp. You can go 2-4 days without having to shampoo. This will help make your tape hair extensions last a lot longer. I promise.

Never lighten the hair extensions. If you want to color hair extensions only go within 2 shades DARKER.

When working out with hair extensions or swimming with hair extensions, be sure to remove excess sweat and chlorine after working out.

When using hot tools be sure to use a heat protectant spray! The more you use heat on your hair, the shorter the life-span of the hair extensions.

Do not use a flat iron directly on the tape tabs. This will weaken the bond and they will slip out.

When using conditioner, condition from mid-shaft to ends only. Do not apply conditioner to your scalp when wearing tape in hair extensions.

When using serums or oils avoid contact with the tape, use on mid length to ends only. We use natural products such as coconut oil on the ends of the extensions to keep the hair healthy and shiny over time.

Every 6-10 weeks, your hair extensions will need to be reapplied to move the bonds closer to the scalp and to keep your hair healthy.

Tape in extensions are not best for those who have lost a significant amount of hair due to any illnesses or for those that have extreme hair thinning. Consult with your stylist about another option.

Since a person’s average natural hair loss is between 50-100 strands per day you will see a small amount of naturally released hairs in between the tape bonds at time of removal.  This is normal and should not be interpreted as hair loss due to wearing hair extensions.

Tape hair extensions don’t just magically “fall” out or jump ship like the folks did when the Titanic went down. If you have used a reputable salon and tape hair extension system, your hair should not be falling out. My advice is to be honest with your stylist if you are having this issue. I can almost guarantee you are missing a crucial care step somewhere.

  • Use a heat protectant before any styling.
  • Gently brush them several times a day using an extension brush like this one that won’t catch on your bonds.
  • Braid your hair or put it in a low pony before sleeping to avoid tangling.
  • Always dry your hair or use a good dry shampoo post-workout.
  • Head to the stylist every 8-10 weeks to have them moved (generally when you can start to see them and they’re harder to hide!)
  • Use non-damaging hair ties like AmatiStyle.

What NOT to do to take care for tape in hair extensions?

  • Sleep with wet extensions because this can damage them!
  • Use a regular brush on wet extensions.
  • Use oil based products near the roots (like argan oil or Moroccan Oil) because this can loosen the bonds.
  • Let products build up between the layers or on your scalp – make sure to wash when you need to!
  • Be careful with your ponytails. Make sure your hair extension expert has placed the panels in a way that best suits the way you like to style your hair.
