How to fix frizzy french braids

level 1

I find my braids hold up throughout the day better when I braid while my hair is still wet. Also using some sort of pomade while I braid seems to help grip it tighter too. If you have layers in your hair the flyaways will be inevitable since your hair is different lengths, it’s mostly about minimizing them.

That's good to know, I'll have to try it with wet hair in the morning one day! I don't put much in my hair because it gets kind of tangled after it's unbraided a day later, but maybe I'll look for something light.

level 1

That looks like it needs to be undone and braided again. When braiding, try to make it as tight as possible so to eliminate loose ends sticking out, and I would hairspray it. Then, if you want to loosen it up, after spraying, gently pull at parts of the braid to loosen.

Are you using any products to help smooth your hair (e.g. conditioner, serum)?

level 2

Gotcha. So basically just rebraid throughout the day?

I’ve been putting Argan and rosehip oil on the ends lately but that’s all

level 1

It looks like you've got two problems - your hair isn't all the same length, and it's really silky smooth. That means the short hairs that aren't reaching the bottom of your plait are slipping out over time and becoming flyaways.

You can try adding a texturising product to your hair, which will prevent hairs being able to slide around so easily, or hairspraying your plait to help hold everything in place. :)

THat's good to know! Would a sea salt spray help do you think?

level 2

This! I am so glad I checked this out. My hair has a lot of slip which presents its own challenges and there were never enough tips or product ads for that kind of hair in magazines growing up. I’m 34 lol so I guess old enough magazines r now a way back when story. ☺️I still need to find a texturizing spray I like.

level 1

I would spray it with water to keep it together when you start braiding, and also use a sticky product, I have a gel spray I use that can be brushed out but holds all day.

level 2

Ooo a spray gel sounds interesting! WHich do you use?

level 2

These are all helpful, thank you!

I don't think I've used heat on my hair in over a year, almost two, so that shouldn't be the problem. I usually wash my hair once or twice a week, but tend to braid it either like this or in two braids. I might have to try a new hair texturizing thing. I'll be able to get something this weekend, so I'll let you know! DO oyu think a sea salt spray would work alright?

When you braid your hair originally, brush it and then dip your fingers into a pomade or something like that, rub it into your fingers really well, and then braid your hair. Should stay cleaner looking for longer.

Also, you could just have the type of hair that you need to redo the braid about half the day... it's long enough it rubs on your shirt when you move your head etc.

level 2

I try not to brush my hair too often because it gets really poofy if I do haha. After a couple days of not washing it I could try that though. I'm thinking a lot of it is it's just long and my shirt is the issue.

level 1

I put a little bit of hair spray on a mascara brush for flyaways. It works wonders for me :)

level 2

Oh, I've never heard of that, thank you!

This will happen easily if your hair isn’t all the same length. I have a lot of layers and my braids look probably 4x worse than yours after an hour or two. I’ve always read in braid tutorials that it’s best to run gel or some other holding product through your hair prior to braiding. It may not fix everything, but it will help a lot

level 1

You could braid while wet and apply hair gel or hair oil over the entirety of your hair. That would probably help. If you have layers some will still escape but the gel and/or oil should hold it mostly in place.

I recommend gel cause I hate how hairspray smells.

I re braid my hair through out the day. Do not use gel or anything with chemicals. Often times I think mine gets frizzy bc I'm playing with it and don't notice

level 1

Keep a wide tooth comb handy and lightly comb through to fend off knots and tangles between hairstyles. I get extra use from mine by using to detangle after washing too. Regarding the products in your hair: a wide tooth comb will maintain the tackier products I mentioned in the state and texture you want them on your hair. Anything bristly will pull and flatten out the product on your hair, a lot of times making it feel heavy and dirty. If you do your maintenance with a light hand and keep it minimal with that comb, you can get a lot of mileage between washes and your product won’t interfere - it will help a lot. That initial application will continue to help with flyaways day to day. Also, those kinds of product give my hair a lot more body from the 2nd day onward than it has on its own, so I start doing loose buns and ponytails that have great volume around my head and great hold I wouldn’t have otherwise. They stay for a half or whole day, depending on how I’m styling it.

Good luck!

level 2

I have one of those, but never use it. I think ill have to start. Thank you! I need a little more second-day volume I think, too. Whenever I put my hair up in a ponytail or bun, it's just like, flat against my head and I hate it, so I avoid it at all costs. I've always wondered about getting volume that way, so thank you!

How do you stop French plaits from frizzing?

Brooklyn-based hairstylist and owner of MyTresses salon, Simone Cremona, tells Refinery29 that the easiest way to prevent frizz is by using pomade or gel while you braid. "A good pomade will add hold while coating the hair and concealing any split ends or flyaways," she says.
