How to clear cache on Samsung TV Series 6

I’ve had my Samsung smart TV for about two years now, and everything about it is almost perfect, whether it be the display, the sound, and the general user experience that Tizen OS has.

Because the TV is a bit old, it has started to show signs of slowing down.

Apps take longer to load, inputs take longer to switch, and the TV responds with a noticeable delay when I use the remote.

The internal storage was nearly full, but I hadn’t downloaded any apps recently, so I decided to clear the extra junk files in the TV’s cache storage.

To find out how I could do this, I looked up guides on Samsung’s support website and asked around several user forums what was the easiest way to get this done.

This guide results from the hours of research that I did so that you’ll also be able to quickly clear the cache on your Samsung TV and get back some of your storage space.

To clear the cache on your Samsung TV, go to each app in the Device Care window. For older TVs, uninstall and reinstall the app you want to clear the cache for.

Keep reading to figure out how you can clear the cache on your Samsung TV and how a reset can also help with it.

What Is Cache Storage

As the name might suggest, Cache storage is an area of storage, usually small in size, used to store and retrieve data that an app or a device uses frequently.

The cache storage is easier to access, and as a result, the app or device doesn’t have to go looking for it again everywhere in the storage device.

This area reserved for storage contains data from calculations that have already been performed before, especially ones that might need lots of computing power.

Having all this data in the cache makes the app or device perform tasks more quickly and respond faster to commands that you give them.

The internal storage reserves some of it for the device and some for each app that you have installed, and they increase in size as time goes on.

Why Should You Clear Your Cache

At a point in time, having a large cache no longer makes the app or device faster, but it takes up space, meaning there’s less space for your apps and other data.

Sometimes this cache storage can be corrupted when incorrect data is written, or some other error deletes a part of it.

This can cause the app to crash randomly or your device to behave uncharacteristically.

If you start having issues with your apps or the device itself, clearing the cache should be among the methods you can try to fix the issue.

Follow the steps that I will talk about in the sections below if your Samsung TV or its apps are having issues.

While newer Samsung TVs have a reliable option to let you clear the cache of the TV and its apps, the older models before 2020 don’t let you do this directly.

Instead, you’ll have to clear the cache with other methods, which I will discuss in the section for those models.

2020/2021 Models

To clear the cache on your 2020 or newer Samsung TV:

  1. Press the Home button on the remote.
  2. Scroll down to Support.
  3. Choose Device Care.
  4. Wait for the TV to scan its storage and compile its report.
  5. Select Manage Storage from the three options on the bottom of the screen.
  6. Highlight the apps that you want to clear the cache for. Prioritize apps that are taking up the most space.
  7. Press the down button when the app is highlighted and select View Details.
  8. Select both Clear Data and Clear Cache to free up the most space.
  9. Back out of the settings page to your home screen.

Check how much storage is left on your TV, and see if you resolved the issue you’ve been having.

Older Models

The only way to clear an app’s cache on your older Samsung TV would be to uninstall the app and reinstall it.

This will remove everything associated with the app, and you will be signed out of whatever accounts you’ve logged into the app.

You cannot uninstall some apps since they come with the TV, so you won’t be able to clear the caches of those apps.

To reinstall apps on your Samsung T:

  1. Select Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Go to My Apps.
  3. Select Options > Delete My Apps.
  4. Choose the app you want to remove the cache for and open it.
  5. Select Delete and confirm the prompt that appears.
  6. Go to the Apps screen again.
  7. Use the search bar to find the app you uninstalled.
  8. Install the app again.

You’ll need to repeat this for every app you want to delete the cache for.

Resetting Your Samsung TV

For apps that you cannot uninstall, the only method that remains is to factory reset your Samsung TV.

A factory reset will restore the TV to how it rolled out of the factory, which means all app updates will be rolled back, and the internal storage wiped clean.

This includes any cache files, so it is a pretty brute force method to delete the cache of apps that you can’t easily clear.

Follow the steps below for your model of TV to factory reset it.

For older TVs:

  1. Press the Home button on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Go to Support > Self Diagnosis.
  4. Select Reset.
  5. Enter the PIN if you’ve set one. Otherwise, it is 0000 by default.
  6. Confirm the prompt that appears.

For 2020/2021 TVs:

  1. Press the Home button on your remote.
  2. Select Settings > General.
  3. Scroll down to Reset and select it.
  4. Enter the PIN if you’ve set one. Otherwise, it is 0000 by default.
  5. Confirm the prompt that appears and wait for the reset to complete.

After the TV resets, check if the issue that made you reset was fixed.

Final Thoughts

You can try clearing the cache of the apps installed on your Samsung TV if you ever run into issues like the flashing red light or any other error that might have been caused by low internal storage.

Browser issues with the Samsung TV can be fixed by clearing the browsing data and the cache for the internet browser.
