"It is true that the son of a bitch is a troublemaker... and nobody would be affected if he left. But he seeks to kill the Gun Devil... I can't kill the Gun Devil by myself... To kill him... I'll need the help of all the capable Devil Hunters I can to face him. Even if my life is shortened... I won't let Denji get killed!"

Aki Hayakawa (早川はやかわ アキ Hayakawa Aki?) was a Public Safety Devil Hunter, working under Makima's special squad.[1] He had contracts with the Curse Devil and Future Devil, and a former contract with the Fox Devil. He was killed and possessed by the Gun Devil, thus becoming a Gun Fiend (銃の魔人, Jū no majin).

Appearance

Human Form

Aki Hayakawa is a handsome young man with medium-length black hair and blue eyes. He usually wears his hair in a topknot style. He often wears the Public Safety Devil Hunter suit and tie. He also wears earrings and usually carries his sword on his back.

Fiend Form

After the Gun Devil took over his body, he becomes the Gun Fiend. His hair is let down with his eyes and forehead covered in dark veins. The barrel and slide of an M1911 is seen sticking out of his face in between his eyes with the gun’s hammer sticking out the back of his head, Aki’s left forearm is replaced with an M16A1.

Personality

Aki generally appears to be a very stoic person. He acts mature and sometimes blunt to the point of rudeness when he's with his fellow Devil Hunters, but he is actually fairly softhearted. He has a tendency to get attached to others easily, and hates to see people get hurt, especially his close friends. Unlike many of his associates, he is described by Himeno as being a "normal person", in the sense that he still grieves for those lost and has not become jaded enough to close his feelings off. Despite this, he is very determined and his primary motivation for killing the Gun Devil is revenge for his family. He is, however, entirely willing to put his own life on the line to save other people despite his own fear of death and even at risk to his ultimate goal.

He doesn't like people who does not take their job as Devil Hunters seriously or fight for a superficial and material goal like money or, in Denji's case, to be able to touch some boobs, being this one the primary reason he and Denji, initially, don't get along. Aki is also ruthless, stating that he always makes sure to make suffer the devils he kills in order to give them a slow and painful death. He can become intimidating with those he still not trust enough, like when he threatens Denji by telling him that if he either betrayes them or side with other devils he will kill him without any hesitation.

His air of cold detachment is a facade, and he has been seen to cry over the deaths of his comrades such as Himeno, and he grew to care for Denji and Power enough to try and forfeit his revenge goal in order to keep them safe.

Plot

History

During Aki’s childhood, his house was completely demolished by the Gun Devil, which killed his brother and both his parents, Aki however was lucky enough to be a fair distance away from the house and survived. Seeing his family be killed right in front of him, he developed a deep hatred for the Gun Devil and Devils in general, and decided to join the Public Safety Devil Hunters in search of revenge against the Gun Devil.

Introduction arc

Denji is assigned to work with Aki, who shows dislike towards Denji on the basis of his motivations being shallow, stating he believes Denji will end up dead as a result of his weak conviction. Aki also tries to make Denji quit his job in Public Safety, going so far as to beat him and threatening to do so again if Denji returns to work. Denji refuses to quit, and Makima assigns Denji to Aki's squad, and assigning him to live with Aki. While hunting a Fiend inside an East Nerima residence, Aki reasserts that Denji's motivations are unserious, and berates him for showing sympathy for Fiends. Aki pairs Denji with Power to work as buddies; likely attempting to hinder Denji from killing any devils, as devils flee from Power's scent, rendering the two less likely to deliver any results, risking the disbandment of Special Division 4 and putting both Denji and Power at risk of being exterminated.

Bat Devil arc

While driving with Makima, Aki asks her why she has such high hopes for Denji, and further expresses his disdain for him. During Denji's battle with the Leech Devil, Aki summons the Fox Devil, defeating the Leech Devil and saving Denji. In the aftermath of the battle, Aki assures Power that Meowy will be sent to a veterinary hospital for a full checkup. While Denji is recuperating, Aki threatens to investigate the Bat Devil incident further and report to the higher-ups, saying he will overlook the incident if Denji follows orders more obediently. Denji agrees to these terms, and Aki lets him off the hook. Makima assigns Power to live in Aki's home, much to Aki's dismay.

Relationships

Denji

Aki and Denji initially hate one another, with their first mission ending up in a physical and verbal altercation, wherein Aki insults and punches Denji, only for Denji to knee him in the crotch and kick him while he's down. He thinks Denji is a simpleton, a brute, vulgar, and too unthinking to continue in a dangerous line of work. Despite the fight, they continue to work together due to Makima's request. Also at Makima's request, Aki allows Denji to move in to his home and takes care of him. After fighting alongside each other and living in the same household, Aki begins to consider Denji as a close friend, although he still finds him obnoxious at times. He even goes so far as to request the Fourth Division be exempt from fighting the Gun Devil in an attempt to keep Denji and Power safe. When Aki was fighting Denji as the Gun Fiend, he imagined it as a snowball fight between friends, or possibly even brothers, as it paralleled his snowball fight with his brother in the past.

Power

Aki and Power also have a less than positive relationship at the beginning, although perhaps not so much as with Denji. Aki dislikes Power's vulgar and ungrateful attitude, and finds her extremely obnoxious. He also takes in Power when Makima requests it, and gradually the two warm up to each other. While he seems embarrassed and annoyed by Power's constant escapades, he considers her a friend as well. Protecting Power is another reason why he wanted the Fourth Division to withdraw from fighting the Gun Devil.

Himeno

Aki has known Himeno since joining Public Safety, and she was his first work partner. She was the one responsible for getting him into smoking, and she also attempted to get him to quit his job in order to ensure his safety. She had a crush on him and it was implied that she kissed him when he was a new recruit. Although it seems that Aki did not return her feelings, he did consider her a dear friend and cried in the wake of her death.

Makima

Aki has a crush on Makima and seems to trust her deeply, although this could possibly be a result of Makima's powers of control. This would explain why Aki cannot recall his reason for liking her. Makima has an utter disregard for Aki's feelings, and was not interested in him beyond his use as a tool. She frequently dumped responsibility on him, like having him take in Power and Denji without asking first and manipulating him when he protested.

Angel Devil

After being partnered up, the two started out on a rough note, with both of them being unable to get along with each other. Despite this, they began to warm up to each other, even to the point where they cared about each other's well being, shown when Aki was willing to hold the Angel Devil's hand in order to save him, despite knowing that in doing so, his lifespan would be shortened. Furthermore, the Angel Devil was inclined to inform Aki of untold information such as the life cycle of devils. Following the encounter with the Devil of Darkness, Aki worried for the Angel Devil's life, suggesting him to form contracts with devil hunters in order to avoid extermination. The Angel Devil also asked Aki what he sees in Makima since it's shown he likes her, and Aki doesn't know the answer. Much like Himeno, he also told Aki to quit the division and get another job before he gets killed.
