Your Ford Escape battery is essential to the operation of your vehicle. The car battery in Ford Escape provides power to start your car and run everything from your radio, lights, to the AC.

In the following article, we will explain everything you need to know before buying your new Escape battery.

We’ll answer important questions like “What type of battery does a Ford Escape take?” and “How much is the battery of Ford Escape?”.

Not only this but we’ll also cover all the important specifications you need to consider to buy the most appropriate battery for your compact crossover.

Cold-cranking amps, reserve capacity, warranty, and group size are essential specifications that you need to consider before buying and installing your new Ford Escape battery.

The battery is often neglected until the vehicle starts experiencing problems like a clicking before starting, or even the check engine light turning on.

Depending on the seriousness of the issues, it may take a while for the average person to trace the problems back to the battery though.

Assuming you’ve correctly diagnosed and limited the issue to the battery itself, we recommend replacing your battery as soon as possible so that you’re not left stranded somewhere when your luck finally runs out.

Factors To Consider When Looking For Your  New Ford Escape Battery

Below are the must-consider factors before purchasing a new battery for your Escape.

Battery Date Code

The battery date code is important to be considered as the older the battery is it means that it had a long shelf life which in most cases decreases the actual operational life. Basically, the newer the battery is, the better.

Compared to most things that are manufactured today, battery date codes can be confusing to decipher if you don’t understand how to use them, but they don’t need to be.

The letters A through L are used to represent the months January all the way to December.

So, January is A and so on.

When looking at a battery label, the first character will range from 0 to 9 (there are no double digits) indicating the last digit of the year when the battery was manufactured.

For example:

A battery with a code of F would indicate the battery was made in June and the following numeral after it would tell you the year of when the battery was manufactured.

Example:

C1 or 1C means the battery was manufactured in March 2021.

Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)

The CCA is the rating given to a battery that tells you how well a battery can provide power for a minimum of 30 seconds at extreme cold temperatures.

Keep in mind that if you live in a colder climate, an increased higher CCA rating may be better for your vehicle.

The easiest way to determine the correct Cold Cranking Amps for your specific Ford Escape Battery is to check your owner’s manual, see what your current battery says, or ask us below in the comments area.

Ford Escape Battery Group Size

The Battery Group Size refers to the dimensions of the battery. This includes the length, width, and height of a certain car battery. It’s important to pick the right battery group size for your Ford Escape, but keep in mind that most vehicles allow for more than one size.

Your exact battery group size for your Escape will be determined based on your owner’s manual.

The other easy way to check which is the proper group size for your specific vehicle is to see the current battery installed or again you can ask us in the comments area below.

Popular Ford Escape Battery Group Sizes

Some of the most common Ford Escape battery group sizes include 96R and (48 H6).

Group Size 96R
  • 9.6L x 6.2W x 6.9H
Group Size 48 (H6)
  • 12.1L x 6.9W x 7.6H

Even though the mentioned above group size would fit in most in the Ford Escapes we still recommend checking your owner’s manual before purchasing a new unit.

Ford Escape Battery Warranty

Most batteries should include a warranty, and if they don’t, pass them up. A warranty protects your investment should things go south- and let’s face it, a battery isn’t cheap.

Some batteries sit on shelves or in warehouses for a while, and the longer they sit, the less oomph (or juice they lose). So, aim to pick a battery that has been manufactured more recently, and that has a good warranty.

Reserve Capacity (RC)

If you intend to operate any electronics, including those that may plug into the auxiliary port or other outlets, then pay attention to the RC or Reserve Capacity.

The RC is a good indicator of how long the battery can provide power while charging your phone when the vehicle is shut off (for example).

Frequently Asked Questions About Ford Escape Batteries

How will I know when my Ford Escape’s battery needs to be replaced?

Most batteries can last up to 5 years or a little longer, but that’s dependent on a variety of factors such as:

  • Your climate and whether you live in a place of extreme temperatures. Hotter summers and colder winters can cause the battery to work harder, which will shorten its life.
  • Your driving habits. Do you take a lot of short trips or even a lot of long trips? Both can add some wear and tear to your battery as well. That isn’t to say you should avoid using your car at all (because that’s impossible), but some wear and tear are to be expected, especially for a car battery.

Other signs include:

  • Slow to start.
  • Corrosion around the terminals and cables.
  • Clicking sounds when turning the key and trying to start the engine.
  • Check engine indicator light is on.

Do I Need To Reset My Ford Escape Car Computer  After Replacing The Battery?

Generally, it is not necessary for most of the models but please consult with your owner’s manual to be sure.

Resetting the computer is mostly needed in the newest vehicles where a lot of systems are involved and need to be re-started after a new battery has been installed.

How Long Does A Ford Escape Battery Last?

Most batteries with proper care will last between 3 to 5 years, but this depends on your driving habits, weather conditions, and whether you maintain the battery properly. For example, removing any corrosion from the terminals or cables with proper cleaners can help prolong the length of your battery and cables.

How Do You Replace A Ford Escape Battery?

For your utmost convenience, we’ve provided a helpful video showing the replacement of a 2014 Ford Escape Battery:

Replacing and changing the battery in the Ford Escape is a relatively easy job if you have the right tools and time.

Accessing the battery can be a little difficult compared to most other models of vehicles though, with the Escape’s battery tucked up and under the windshield wiper cowling.

Necessary Tools:

  1. 13mmeter wrench
  2. 10mmeter wrench
  3. Plastic fastener removal tool
  4. Gloves (recommended)

While gloves are not necessary, wearing gloves could protect your hands from any of the corrosive chemicals that you may encounter when dealing with the battery terminals.

  • Open the hood
  • Moving forward, find and locate the negative battery cable connected to the firewall. Carefully disconnect it using the 13mmeter wrench. Isolate the same cable to make sure it won’t come in contact with any other metal- wrapping a simple shop towel around the end will work fine.
  • Next, remove the battery cover off the battery and then find and locate the air filter and its covering. Remove the air filter cover with the same 13mmeter wrench used earlier. Once the air filter box is uncovered, remove the air filter carefully and set it aside so that you can get to the lower airbox to remove it as well.
  • Using the fastener removal tool, carefully pop the wiring grommets out so that you can move the wiring harness out of the way.
  • Using your 10mmeter wrench – remove the positive battery cable. With everything is disconnected from the prior steps, you can now move the battery box out of the way to gain access to the battery itself.
  • Use the 10mmmeter wrench to loosen and remove the battery holding bracket.
  • Next, grab hold of the battery and pull it slightly forward toward you so that you can access the other end of the negative battery cable.
  • Once you’ve disconnected the battery cable, pull the battery out and replace it with the new one. This would also be a good time to clean up any corrosion using an appropriate cleaner and wire brush or old shop rags.
  • When you’re happy with the placement of the battery, place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery terminal and tighten with the 10mmeter wrench.
  • Slide the battery back into the battery box and replace the battery holding bracket you removed earlier.
  • Reinstall the front of the battery box and positive battery cable.
  • Reinstall the wiring harness, the grommets should snap back into place.
  • Reinstall the lower air filter assembly followed by the air filter and the cover.
  • Replace the battery cover and reconnect the negative battery cable to the firewall.
