How much do runway models get paid?

High-fashion modeling is the highest-paid division of modeling work in the industry. Models in high fashion wear designer clothes, have their pictures taken frequently and travel extensively. However, high-fashion modeling is hard work, and it is not a good fit for all models.

High-Fashion Modeling Job Description

High-fashion modeling is also called catwalk modeling or ramp modeling. High-fashion modeling tends to employ those identifying as women who are approximately 5 feet 8 inches or taller, and those identifying as men who are 5 feet 11 inches or taller. High-fashion models are traditionally very trim, and have historically been encouraged to remain so. Today, models come in all shapes and sizes. They are required to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen; the team at Masterclass emphasizes that taking care of one’s body is among the most important parts of working as a model.

Models can be children, teenagers or adults. High-fashion models are generally in their late teens or early twenties, especially if they are women. Some men continue to do high-fashion modeling past their twenties. Self-care despite workplace stress is key to supporting the longevity of your career as a model.

Models begin their careers by having professional photos taken to create a portfolio. It can help to find a reputable modeling agency to represent you and let you know about modeling opportunities. It may be good to take classes in modeling, acting, music or another art form that gives you a unique edge over other industry workers. Note that models may be charged commission fees, travel fees and test shoot fees by their agency. It pays to start with a nest egg of savings before launching into the world of modeling.

High-Fashion Modeling Education or Training

A formal education is not usually required for models, though many may pursue higher degrees. Typically, on-the-job training occurs when models follow the basic entry processes into the industry.

Models attend open calls, which occur when a company or business asks for models to audition for their product line. Models come to an open call, have their photo taken and then wait to find out if they will be chosen as a representative of the company. Open calls are unpaid unless a model is hired by the company. As a model develops experience and expertise, she may find higher-paying and more frequent work.

Some high-fashion models are able to earn extra money when they open a clothing line or make social media endorsements. Social media can also help unknown models garner attention for themselves and their style. However, some models are discovered when doing everyday activities, like working at a restaurant.

High-Fashion Modeling Salary

Being a high-fashion model can pay well. Supermodels Kendall Jenner, Gisele Bündchen and Bella Hadid have made millions of dollars from their work. Less-famous models may be paid $800 to $1,000 per runway show for some events. However, this is the exception, not the rule. An article published in 2018 by Insider said that models earn an average of $48,130 per year in New York City, home to Fashion Week and other major designer events. However, modeling salaries really do vary widely; the 10 highest-paid models globally in 2017 earned a combined sum of $109.5 million.

According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average hourly pay for a model was $15.34 per hour, or $31,910 per year. The team at Simply Hired said that models typically earn an average salary of $52,482 per year as of June 2021. There was a 1 percent job growth prediction for 2019 to 2029, which is well below the average across all industries of 4 percent.

Modeling can be very competitive, and it can be hard to find full-time work. This is why many models have a second job that pays for food, rent and insurance while they wait for modeling jobs. Some companies pay their models with designer clothes, which are valuable but are hard to eat.

Do models get free stuff?

Now, this fully depends on the job that you are doing! If you are a runway model, don’t expect to get anything for free, but you can still have some sales by the designers that are showing their jobs.
