How much did Whyte make against Joshua?

Anthony Joshua insisted he is ‘happy’ for Dillian Whyte, who will earn a career high payday to fight WBC champion Tyson Fury on Saturday night.

Talks had been taking place earlier this year about a potential deal for Fury to face Oleksandr Usyk next in an undisputed title clash, with Whyte and Anthony Joshua being paid millions to step aside.

Fury and Whyte will both earn big money for their fight

However, these talks collapsed and so the WBC pressed ahead with purse bids for their mandatory fight, which is live on talkSPORT on Saturday night.

Frank Warren won with a record bid of $41million (£30.6million) – confirmed to be the biggest purse bid in boxing history – while Eddie Hearn bid $32million (£23.9million).

Of Warren’s winning bid, 10 per cent is kept as a winner’s bonus, while the rest is split 80/20 in favour of defending champion Fury.

This means that Fury will receive $29.5million (£22million), Whyte will receive $7.4million (£5.5million), and the winner of the fight earns an additional $4.1million bonus (£3.1million).

Giving a brief reaction, Joshua said: “Even though Dillian Whyte is an enemy of mine, I’m low key happy for him.”

Later when discussing the fight, Joshua told iFL TV: “It’s a good defence against Dillian Whyte.

“Dillian Whyte needs to come in look at what Tyson Fury does and reacts to the complete opposite.

“Maybe work the body and be conditioned to go the distance, but I hope Dillian trains hard and doesn’t underestimate Tyson.

“Because it’s his first time fighting for a title, I think he’ll be hungry.

“This ain’t his 10th time fighting for a title and he can have a little hiccup along the way – this is his first time fighting for a title.

“I’m rooting for Dillian, even though I hate him and I wanna smash him one of these days. Go on Dillian, I’m with you all the way.”

talkSPORT will bring you live coverage of the huge heavyweight world title fight between Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte at Wembley on Saturday night, with our coverage starting from 7.30pm and featuring expert ringside analysis from Ben Davison

Dillian Whyte has had a long wait for his shot at the world heavyweight championship and now finally gets his shot at Wembley on Saturday night. However, his winnings will be subject to an 80:20 split with Fury as the current WBC and The Ring heavyweight champion, something Whyte has taken issue to in the build up.

The Londoner missed last month's press conference and other promotional events, seemingly in protest over the fight's promotion but has arrived in his home city for the fight. The 34-year-old is set to receive £5.5 million for the fight in comparison to roughly £40 million for Fury.

Frank Warren won the purse bids for the fight, beating Eddie Hearn's £23 million bid with a bid of approximately £30 million. Anthony Joshua knocked-out Whyte in 2015 on the way to a World Championship fight at Wembley in 2017 against Wladimir Klitschko but said in an interview with iFL TV that he was happy for a man who he describes as an 'enemy'.

Joshua explained: “Even though Dillian Whyte is an enemy of mine, I’m low-key happy for him. He added: "It’s a good defence (for Fury) against Whyte."

Whyte will receive up to £3 million should he win the fight on Saturday but the doors that would open as the world champion could well be a rematch against Fury, or a unification bout with Oleksandr Usyk.

Joshua added: “Dillian Whyte needs to come in, look at what Tyson Fury does, and react to the complete opposite. Maybe work the body and be conditioned to go the distance, but I hope Dillian trains hard and doesn’t underestimate Tyson.

“Because it’s his first time fighting for a title, I think he’ll be hungry. This ain’t his 10th time fighting for a title and he can have a little hiccough along the way; this is his first time fighting for a title.

Anthony Joshua has said he is “rooting for” Dillian Whyte in Saturday’s heavyweight title fight with Tyson Fury.

Whyte will look to become the first fighter to beat Fury, whose WBC belt is on the line in the main-event contest at Wembley Stadium.

Joshua knocked out Whyte in 2015, avenging an amateur loss to his fellow Briton, with whom he has shared a fierce rivalry.

After hearing that Whyte will earn around £5.5million for Saturday’s fight with Fury – and another £3m if he wins – Joshua admitted: “Even though Dillian Whyte is an enemy of mine, I’m low-key happy for him.”

The former two-time world champion later told iFL TV: “It’s a good defence against Dillian Whyte.

“Dillian Whyte needs to come in, look at what Tyson Fury does, and react to the complete opposite.

“I’m rooting for Dillian, even though I hate him and I wanna smash him one of these days. Go on, Dillian, I’m with you all the way.”

Fury’s promoter Frank Warren won the purse bid with his effort of approximately £30million, which beat the £23m put forward by Whyte’s promoter Eddie Hearn, who also promotes Joshua. Both were record bids in the entire history of boxing.

An 80/20 per cent purse split was agreed in favour of champion Fury, though the split only relates to 90 per cent of the overall winning bid (£27m) – because the promoter must deposit the other 10 per cent.

As such, Fury will thus take home approximately £21.5m, while Whyte receives around £5.5m. The winner will receive the 10 per cent deposit (£3m).
