The same can be said about pizzas, as one customer lamented on Reddit this week after he shared a photo of the considerable difference in the pizza boxes from Domino's compared to his local pizza joint when he ordered a 'large'.

"My local place charges $30 for a large pizza. Domino's charges $6.99. The explanation seems pretty clear," one person commented.
Though others agreed the sizing system didn't mean much these days.

"Size categories are subjective and mean nothing," another added, while a third said: "I swear pizzas shrunk in the late 90's."
'Large' pizzas compared

So we ordered a 'large' pizza from a few popular pizza chains – Domino's, Pizza Hut and Crust – as well as local restaurants and takeaways in Sydney.
Even during the ordering process it can get a bit tricky, as only some eateries list their sizes paired with actual measurements. So how big a 'medium' is versus a 'large' or even an 'extra large' can be hard to know.

We ordered a 'large' pizza from various places around Sydney. (Nine)There was one clear winner that surprisingly came out on top in both size and price (debunking the popular belief that size always translates to cost as well).
It was a Margherita from Ciao Ciao Pizza in Crows Nest that cost $19.
The local restaurants all performed better in the size department, though they were generally priced considerably higher.
The Super Supreme from Manoosh Pizzeria in Mosman cost $24.50, Kirribilli Woodfire Kitchen's Margherita came in at $26, while Glorietta in North Sydney was the most expensive of the lot, with the Burrata pizza costing $30.

Rather unsurprisingly, the 'large' pizzas from both Domino's and Pizza Hut were the smallest of the bunch – both the boxes and the pizzas themselves.
When they arrived, the reactions were loud and clear.
"F--k off, that's not a large," one person exclaimed.
"There is no way that's a large," another agreed.
And cost-wise, they were not that much cheaper, with the Pepperoni from Domino's costing $17.95, while the Butcher's Block from Pizza Hut was $22.50. Of course, on days like 'Cheap Tuesday' you can get a pizza for as little as $5.
