HOW TO RELEASE YOUR BUTTERFLIES

HOW TO RELEASE:

It is so easy!

All our butterflies are shipped in viewing envelopes overnight or the day before.

First read these instructions.

  • Each box includes this care and release instruction pamphlet, a copy of the invoice, a copy of the Indian Legend, and an icepack.
  • Each of our butterflies is fed prior to shipping and is shipped safely in individual envelopes.   Look through the viewing window on each envelope to insure each butterfly has arrived safely.
  • Place the butterflies back into the box and store them in a safe, cool, quiet area such as an air-conditioned room, a closet or basement.  The butterflies will remain dormant in cool areas below 60F.  In extreme warm weather, refreeze the icepack and place it back in the box, the same way it arrived.  Keep the butterflies safe from pets.  The butterflies can damage their wings if they become too active due to stress or heat.
  • One half-hour before the release, remove the icepack, place the butterflies into the mass release box or release cage.  For an individual release, just simply place the envelopes in a basket.
  • Move the butterflies to a warm, bright area but avoid direct sunlight.
  • Distribute them among the guests.
  • Make a wish and release!

We recommend releasing the butterflies at least ½ hour before sunset because it will give the butterflies enough time to find shelter.  Do not release butterflies at temperatures below 65F or during inclement weather.  Instead, use the release cage as a holding cage until the weather clears up.   In case you cannot release them within 24 hours, please read the care instructions or call us at 845 832 6749.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

If it is raining, do not release your butterflies. Wait until the rain stops.  A light mist is okay as long as it is warm outside.  If you can’t release them within 24 hrs because of weather, please feed your butterflies using pesticide-free flowers or cotton balls soaked in Gatorade.  Release your butterflies into a big box.  Make the container escape-free by securing paper towels or netting over the top of the box, or just place them in our centerpieces.  Also, lightly mist the butterflies through the netting several times a day or more if your house is dry.

TIPS FOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER :

Try to capture a specific moment and butterfly.  Do not try to capture your butterflies against the sky as it will be very difficult to see; they will appear small and in some cases be impossible to see.  Since butterflies will fly towards bright objects, including flowers, wait for one to land and photograph it.  If you want to reserve a few butterflies for photograph purposes, place them in a refrigerator within their envelopes (not near the freezer) for about 30-45 minutes.  They will be cool and will not fly right away.  Pick them up with wings folded between your second and third fingers.  Place them where you want them and shoot.

Every order comes with detailed release instructions. The first thing you want to do after receiving your package is open your shipping box. When you open your shipping box you will see your receipt along with release instructions. Set your paperwork off to the side. Open the lid of your foam lined insulated cooler, you will see that we have placed ice packs in the shipping box. What this does is help the butterflies travel easier, the coolness makes them go into a dormant state so that they don’t damage their wings or stress out. If your ice packs are NOT frozen, please take the ones that traveled with your butterflies and replace them with your own.

You do have the option of refreezing the icepacks we send, just make sure that while the butterflies are waiting that they are kept in a cool, quiet area. You want to keep the butterflies in a cool quiet place until 30-45 minutes before you release them. If it is cool outside or not very sunny take the ice away from them at least an hour in advance just to be sure they warm up, what this does is help them wake up naturally and get ready to fly for you. Never leave butterflies in direct sun light. Do not microwave them.

When you get ready to release your butterflies it is very important that it is at least 67 degrees and sunny out. Imagine the butterflies wings as little solar panels, they need to warm in order to wake up and fly. If you are doing a individual release please put someone in charge of passing out the envelopes. While they are doing this please ask them to tell each guest that there is a live butterfly in the envelope, please do not open the envelope until they get the okay. One thing i love is making sure responsible children get to open their own butterfly. Sometimes they are more responsible than we give them credit for and will be extra careful.

If you are doing a mass release,  make sure they also have the time to warm up and get ready to fly. Our boxes will have little windows on them so you can peak in at your butterflies. Once they wake up they will begin to move their wings and walk around. Once you are ready to release them you open your lid and they start to fly out. Do not get upset if they do not all start flying out at once, a few may be shy or they’ve decided they want to take a little bit longer. If you experience this just give the box a little shake to motivate them. Please do not shake rapidly, just a little to help motivate them. You may not experience this, but we can never predict what live insects will do.

    • DO NOT release butterflies in the cold!
    • DO NOT release live butterflies in the rain. Butterflies have little wings, imagine what a rain drop is like to them.
    • DO NOT release live butterflies indoors. The purpose of this release is to help replenish the deleting population of butterflies. Butterflies are beautiful and are amazing for your event, but please remember these guys are pollinators and so important for the environment.  We want our healthy butterflies to get back out there and get to work!

    PHOTOGRAPHERS:

If you want to get some beautiful still shots of our butterflies, I recommend placing the few butterflies you will use for the picture in the fridge for 5 minutes. Take the butterfly or butterflies out, place them where you want them and get your shots. If you notice the butterflies you are using are starting to become more active that means they are waking up. Gently put them back into the fridge, wait 5-10 minutes, then they will be nice and cooled down ready to model for you again.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at any time. I’m always here to answer your questions, helping make your event as amazing as you want it to be!

How long should you wait to release a butterfly

How long should you wait to release a Monarch butterfly?

While monarchs can spread their wings and dry sufficiently to take a short flight after 90-120 minutes, it is best to wait 24 hours to release them. A monarch's first short flight soon after emergence allows them to reach a dark and protected spot where they rest the remainder of the day unless disturbed.

How do you know when butterflies are ready to be released?

Since butterflies are cold-blooded, they need heat to warm and activate their bodies to get the energy to fly. That's why butterflies are active in the afternoon but disappear after sunset or if it's cloudy. Release butterflies only when the temperatures are between 60 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is the best time of day to release a butterfly?

Light: Release an hour before sunset if possible. Although they can be released thirty minutes before sunset, their chance of survival is greater if they are released an hour before sunset. When it is dusk or dark, they sit and wait for sunshine. If you MUST release in the dark, do the same as for low temperatures.

How do you release a new butterfly?

Bring the butterfly outside so that it can warm its wings in the sunlight. Wait to release your butterfly if it's raining, or if the forecast high temp is less than 60° fahrenheit. They can hang from the top of a butterfly-only mesh cage, or an indoor plant until the weather improves.
