How long can I use the Nuna car seat?

Breathing clean air is essential for your little one’s health. Eliminating sources of chemical emissions is the most effective way to reduce indoor air pollution*.

As part of our commitment to mindful manufacturing, many Nuna products meet the standards for GREENGUARD GOLD certification. This means that they have been thoroughly tested and certified to meet stringent emissions standards for over 360 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and chemical emissions.

PIPA series recommended use:

from 4 to 32 lb, up to 32 inches.

Ideal for city living

FAA-certified

for aircraft use with or without the base

The Nuna RAVA can be used from birth with babies as small as 5 pounds, up to 65 pounds or 49" tall when your child can transition to a booster car seat; with a 10 year expiration from date of manufacture, the RAVA is built to last.

See this page to learn more about how the Nuna RAVA can be used for a newborn in place of - or in addition to - an infant car seat.

While rear-facing (the recommended positioning for at minimum 2 years of age or more), the Nuna RAVA can be used from 5 pounds up to a whopping 50 pounds, with the maximum height capacity of 49" tall.

When does the Nuna RAVA expire?

Known as the useful life or expiration date, the RAVA can be used up to 10 years after the date of purchase. The date of manufacture is printed on the underside of your car seat.

How long will the Nuna PIPA last?

How long can I use the Nuna car seat?

As infant car seats, Nuna PIPA series car seats are designed to be used until your child is approximately age 1.

If you plan to keep this infant car seat for other children as well, PIPA car seats will last 7 years before reaching its expiration.

How long can baby use the Nuna PIPA?

Nuna makes six versions of the PIPA series: the PIPA, PIPA RX, PIPA Lite, PIPA Lite R, PIPA Lite LX and PIPA Lite RX—all of which can be used for approximately one year.

Your child will almost always reach the 32-inch height limit before hitting the 35-pound weight limit on the car seat. When there's less than an inch between the top of your child's head and the top of the car seat, it's time for a convertible car seat like the Nuna RAVA.

All Nuna infant car seats can be used with babies as small as 4 pounds. Each includes a low-birth weight pillow within the infant insert, which is designed to support your little one up to 11 pounds (at which time it should be removed).

You can keep the head and body inserts in place as long as your child needs them, but they should be removed when the harness becomes too snug for your child's comfort. Here is what Nuna recommends for proper harness tightness for your car seat:

A snug harness cannot be pinched, and should not allow any slack. Make sure the harness is snug around the child and lays flat. It lies in a relatively straight line without sagging. It does not press on the child’s flesh or push the child’s body in an unnatural position.

A snug but comfortable harness is important for good crash protection. Slack in the harness at the time of a crash could result in serious injury or death. The harness is tight enough if after placing the harness at the proper height (AT or JUST BELOW the shoulder height for rear facing) you cannot pinch a fold in the strap.

When does the Nuna PIPA expire?

Infant car seat expiration dates help ensure that you are using a car seat that is functioning as designed to protect your child on the go. If you have a growing family, it may be helpful—and cost effective—to use the infant car seat from your first child for baby two and beyond.

In general, infant car seats expire 6-7 years after purchase, and the expiration date or useful life of a PIPA car seat is 7 years after original purchase. You can find the expiration date of your car seat printed on the bottom of the seat shell and of the car seat base. You will want to plan on replacing the car seat around that date indicated for a number of reasons.

Most importantly, materials used to build all car seats (from foam to metal to plastic parts) will be affected overtime by daily use, exposure to the elements such as humidity, and extreme temperature variation in your vehicle.

Car seats at or beyond their expiration date will not have the structural integrity needed in event of an accident. With a safety item like an infant car seat, you want to ensure it is functioning exactly as designed to protect your precious cargo.

Transitioning your infant from stroller to car seat can be fraught: Will they start fussing? Wake from a much-needed nap? Pitch a fit when you release one set of buckles but then strap them in to something else? But there's a product that solves this dilemma. It's called a travel system, and it's a car seat and stroller combo, sold together, that works together. These duos customarily feature an infant car seat that clips directly into the matching stroller so you can stop wasting time switching your baby between the two. In brief, it means your infant stays in the car seat and you move the car seat from its base in the backseat of your car to the top of the stroller, leaving your baby buckled in and undisturbed. The stroller can also be used as a regular stroller if you choose to sit your baby directly on its seat. This makes it useful for years, even after your baby has outgrown the infant car seat.

The parenting and product experts at Good Housekeeping Institute's Little Lab test a variety of car seats and strollers from booster seats and infant car seats to lightweight strollers amongst many other essential products for children, including our annual parenting awards. We've evaluated more than two dozen stroller and car seat combos based on ease of use, safety features, functionality and value.

When testing strollers, the Institute performs a brake test using a gage to measure the force required to move the strollers when brakes are engaged. We also perform a stability/tip over test in which we hang weights on stroller handlebars and measure the force required to tip strollers over. We weigh and measure each stroller while folded to help determine how well it can be carried and stored. Our testers also place the travel systems into a variety of vehicles, taking note on each product's ease of use when it comes to installation, folding and unfolding, transportation, maneuverability, clipping and unclipping and much more.

Do you need a travel system?

ghi line

Transferring your baby from car to stroller can be a lot of work, and until your precious bundle can sit up on their own, they'll need a bassinet or fully-reclinable seat to safely relax in a stroller. That's where a travel system will be your new best friend: Not only will a travel system be able to protect your baby in the car and in a stroller, but it means you only have to make one purchase for both items. Think of it as two-for deal, where you get a stroller and a car seat both at a discount because you buy them together.

Travel systems are particularly great for parents on the go who want an easy and quick way of carrying around their little ones without having to pack so many additional items. With one click, you can pop the seat right out of the stroller and snap it into your car within seconds without disturbing your infant transferring them from car seat to stroller. There's also no need to worry about whether or not your products are compatible since they come bundled together. Plus, even after your baby outgrows the car seat, you will still be able to use the stroller for years to come.

You will not want a travel system if your heart is set on one brand's infant car seat and another brand's stroller. In that case, you can check to see if the stroller can hold your chosen car seat with the help of an adaptor. Read all the product specs carefully to be sure you can use them together, buy an adaptor if possible, then purchase the stroller and car seat separately without the two-piece discount.

Are car seat stroller combos safe?

ghi line

Keeping your little one safe is your (and our) number one priority, so you may be asking yourself, are car seat and stroller combos secure enough for baby? All of the strollers we recommend meet the ASTM standards, and many even have the third-party JPMA seal as well. You don't have to worry about your baby as long as everything is installed properly. Here are some tips to guarantee that your kids are protected whether they're in the stroller or strapped in to the car:

  • Make sure your travel system is correct for the age of your baby, and that infants have a bassinet or fully-reclinable seat until they can sit up unassisted.
  • Thoroughly read the directions of your car seat and stroller combo prior to use to ensure that you've included all of the parts and put it together correctly. Ensure that the latch base is properly installed in your car and that the car seat can seamlessly click into place.
  • Make sure you hear the click! It's important that your car seat is correctly latched into place before you drive off, so practice clipping the car seat in before baby is inside until you're a pro.
  • Check for stroller safety features before taking your baby on the road. A wide base means the stroller is less likely to tip over and a canopy will protect your baby from the strong sun. Make sure you know how to properly operate the brakes (or lock the wheels if possible).
  • Don't leave your little one snoozing in their car seat (or stroller), per the AAP. While one of the benefits of a car seat and stroller combo is being able to transfer your infant without disturbing them, as soon as you're able, transfer them over to a proper sleep surface.

What to look for in a car seat and stroller combo

doubleline

  • Height and weight limits: Before you purchase anything, check out the height and weight limitations of the model. These specifications will be different depending on each car seat and stroller combo. To make sure your baby is as safe as possible, ensure that they are in the recommended height and weight amount.
  • Purpose: Are you looking for a travel system that will grow with your baby or just something that will make your jogging trips to the park that much easier? Depending on how you plan on using your car seat and stroller combo, you'll want to look for a model that fulfills your lifestyle needs.
  • Features: While a no-frills option can be great for your budget, some car seat and stroller combos offer great features that make all the difference. Are you planning on taking a lot of sunlit walks? Opt in for a unit with a large UV canopy. Do you want to carry a lot with you? Find something with ample-sized storage baskets. And, of course, trays and cupholders are great for storing baby's snacks and toys while out and about.
  • Ease of use: You'll want to find a car seat and stroller combo that is lightweight, easy to set up and can quickly and efficiently be switched between the car and a stroller.
  • Weight: Make sure to check out the weight of the car seat before purchase. You may think a 20 pound car seat will be easy to pick up, but don't forget to factor your baby's weight into that arm workout. Consider a travel system that can be easily carried and a stroller that can be flipped open with minimal effort.
