I am planning on a trip toCrescent City, CA at the end of June 2011. It seems there is quite a bit of Redwood Forest to be seen there in Crescent City but looking online, the Avenue of the Giants seems like a "must see". Is it quite a long trip between Crescent City to the Avenue of the Giants? I'm trying to figure out whether or not it's worth it. Thanks! Show Report inappropriate content

Re: Driving from Crescent City to Avenue of the Giants 11 years ago Save I will have to disagree with the above comment which was quite rude. Once you are inCrescent City, you are in the midst of the finest redwood forests. Jedidiah Smith State Park as well as Del Norte and Prairie Creek State Parks are within a short driving distance. It would take you many days to exhaust viewing the redwood groves in this area. In addition, there is a spectacular coastline to see. There's no need to travel south of Eureka to visit the Avenue of the Giants. That area is wonderful too but no better than what you will see up north. Of course, it really depends on how interested you are and how many days you want to spend in the area as to how far to travel to see the groves. That is something you will have to decide. Re: Driving from Crescent City to Avenue of the Giants 11 years ago Save I will have to disagree with the above comment which is quite condecending. OP did not ask if there is a need to visit theAvenue of the Giants; she wanted to know the distance and if the drive were worth it. By driving South from Crescent City, she would go through the above mentioned Redwood areas, the great coastline AND get to the Avenue of the Giants. Need to focus, super. Also need to figure out what rude really is, not just something you don't argee with. Chuck... Report inappropriate content

If we can have the redwood experience without the extra drive perhaps we'll stay in the area. We've never been to this area of the country before so we're just trying to plan everything out - seeing redwoods and beaches. Thanks again. Report inappropriate content

Re: Driving from Crescent City to Avenue of the Giants 11 years ago Save Hi, I'm the TripAdvisor "Destination Expert" forCrescent City so perhaps I can help you :-) The actual driving time between Crescent City and Eureka (taking the main road) is about an hour and a half. The Avenue of the Giants is about an hour farther south. The main area of the redwoods stretches about 40-50 miles between Crescent City and the tiny town of Trinidad, just north of Eureka. It is well worth exploring the area between Crescent City and Eureka. Highway 101 goes directly through zillions of redwood trees, and there are many places to go off on side roads to park and hike if you like to do that. If you're not hikers, don't worry, you'll see lots and lots of beautiful scenery! The Avenue of the Giants is a section of old Highway 101 before the new freeway/divided road was built. It's a pretty drive that many people enjoy, but if you don't want to take the time to drive all that way south, you honestly won't be missing that much. One place I would highly, highly recommend you do see is just a tick east of Crescent City and it's called Howland Hill Road. It is the absolute *best* place to see massive redwood trees with the easiest access: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60944-d1452361-r86861445-Howland_Hill_Road-Crescent_City_California.html There is a lot to do and see around Crescent City itself: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g60944-c139445/Crescent-City:California:Crescent.City.Sights.And.Attractions.html There is much to see in Redwood Nat'l Park. Here are some websites to help with your planning: http://www.shannontech.com/ParkVision/Redwood/Redwood.html http://exploredelnorte.com/ If you choose to drive to Eureka for a day trip, there is a lot to do and see there also - don't miss Trinidad!
