How far did Frodo and Sam walk to Mordor?

Thanks to Tolkien’s meticulous detail (and the research of scholars like Karen Wynn Fonstad) we know that Frodo covered roughly 1,779 miles [1] on the outbound leg of his journey from the Shire to Mordor.

That’s no walk in the park. It’s the equivalent of walking from Denver to New York City, or from London to Moscow (provided you take the Chunnel, of course). It puts Frodo’s journey roughly equal to the Great Eastern Trail (which runs from Upstate New York to Alabama), but still a few hundred miles short of the Appalachian Trail. In the UK, you’d have to hike the Thames Path nearly 10 times.

We also know that Frodo left Bag End on September 23, and arrived at Mount Doom on March 25 of the following year [2]. That means Frodo’s eastward journey took 183 days [3], which works out to 9.7 miles a day.

Two things. First of all, Frodo cheated [4]. And secondly, you could still do better.

Most hikers can hit an average of 12 miles a day. Beginners may start around 8, and experienced hikers might hit 15 or 20, but  hikers on the Appalachian trail average around 12.7 miles per day [5], covering 2,180 miles in 6 months.

If you, Mr. or Ms. Average Appalachian Trail Hiker, left Hobbitton today and hiked all the way to the top of Mount Doom, it would only take you around 148 days, a full month faster than it took Frodo. And you wouldn’t even have to cheat.

Of course, you wouldn’t be weighed down by the world’s most powerful evil hanging around your neck, either. And you’d probably wear shoes.

Ever wonder just how far Frodo and Sam walked in The Lord of the Rings trilogy? Thanks to one Middle-earth fan on TikTok by the name of DonMarshall72, we know. They estimate that from the Shire to the fires of Mount Doom spans an enormous 2,765.6 kilometers. Or, about 1,718.5 miles. And Frodo and Sam both walked barefoot. So if these halflings could do it, what is your excuse not to? Why not get motivated to walk like a Hobbit, so to speak?

Well, as with most things these days, there’s an app for that. And it’s named, appropriately enough, “ Walk to Mordor.” The existence of this app comes to us via a story on CNET. The author used the Hobbits’ journey in the films to motivate herself to get back up on that treadmill and start exercising again. The Walk to Mordor app actually outdoes the journey in the films. It accounts for the longer distance recorded in Tolkien’s book.

Stopping off at Tom Bombadil’s house factors into the app’s trip. And the films famously omitted that section of the books. Ultimately, via the app, the novel’s version of the journey is a total of 3,109.17 kilometers. So about 1,931.95 miles. As with most book-to-film adaptations, they chopped off a lot of the extra mileage. Quite literally.

As the original article points out, other pop culture apps exist to motivate one to get off the couch. Particularly, a whole mess of zombie ones. Not sure yet if we have an “escape from a slasher” exercise app, but we should. In the end though, what is more motivating than imagining oneself as Frodo or Sam, needing to walk that pesky One Ring into the volcano to its destruction? Time to exercise like the fate of Middle-earth is counting on you. When it comes to your personal exercise journey, you bow to no one.

They might have big feet, but with those little legs Hobbits Samwise Gamgee and Frodo Baggins had their work cut out trekking from Bag End to Mount Doom.

One thing that has always enthralled youngsters – and, ahem, grown-ups – when picking up Tolkien’s books is the attention to geography and the maps of Middle Earth.

- Why the Hobbit trilogy should have been LONGER
- Alan Howard, voice of Sauron, dies at 77
- Boy suspended for threatening classmates with ‘the one ring’

Well now, thanks to one brilliantly thorough Imgur user called, obviously, Mattsawizard, we can now work out how far those little legs had to go.

Better still he’s contextualised them with the UK. Bravo.

Hobbiton to Bree
