How do you get into the restricted section in Pillars of Eternity 2?

In the Archives (right section of the dungeon), in a part of the Restricted Section that can be accessed from the Quarantined Section (where you fight Notnok), you can find a book “Alchemy of Imp Spray”. Give this book to Fetid Spray and you will get the achievement.

I'm planning on getting the DLC eventually, but in the meantime I was wondering if someone who has already played it could give me some (possibly?) minor spoilers.

My question is this: are the librarians in the Forgotten Sanctum Wael godlikes? And if so, what abilities do they have? I seem to remember an event on Black Isle where there's a Wael godlike whose appearance matches theirs pretty closely, but there was no mention of it in the Dev stream.

My other theory is that they could be old servants who have become eyeless from staying around Wael too long (a la Fallen London's Eyeless Skull) but man, I really would like for it to be Wael godlikes.

If the answer turns out to be some massive spoiler, just tell me "yes" or "no". I can take it.

Those are not Wael godlikes. Your second theory is somewhat closer to the truth.

Librarians seems kinda like drones rather than persons, I think they kinda lost something in process of becoming librarians

I tried to sneak past them in the restricted section but the bottom right room is so thick with them that I sadly had to kill them. A pity. They were pleasant smf harmless enough.

Alternately, swipe the necklace to fight it (and the animated weapons it summons), using Perception and Constitution afflictions as much as possible. It will be a tough fight, but knockdowns and interrupts combined with high burst damage abilities like Devastating Blow will make it easier. When the summons appear, ignore and heal through them as best you can and focus on taking down Enchanted Armor, as doing so will cause the summons to disappear. Afterward, loot the armor and helm (the stats will be the same).

Continue up the stairs and take out the spores. With careful positioning and a wall spell set up at the choke, this fight should be easy enough. Afterward, approach the device in the center of the room to receive The Annals of Llengrath, Volume II of V.

In the far east room you can find The Weyc's Wand (soulbound wand) in the chest. Stealing it will prompt two Enchanted Armor to attack you. However, they won't be nearly as difficult as the one you may have fought previously. Blind and petrify them and they should go down easy.

In the room below Giant Luminscent Spore, acquire The Annals of Llengrath, Volume IV of V. North of it you'll find Giant Luminscent Spore, which claims to be Llengrath. From here you have several options.

    • If you used the table in the Hall of Reconfiguration to produce fungal fertilizer, you can offer it to the spore to save yourself.
    • Ask it about itself, then tell it you're not going to stop its desire to grow on Wael to receive Maura's Infested Grimoire and Spore Encrusted Key. Doing so will also prevent the need to fight further spore creatures. You can also loot Curious Sporeling / Amanita (pet).
    • If you oppose the Spore, you'll have to fight it (and a ton of spore tendrils). Unless you have an intense hatred for spores, this isn't recommended as it makes the remaining areas more difficult (i.e. more spores to fight).

Afterward, touch the device behind the Spore to acquire The Annals of Llengrath, Volume V of V.

In the southwest room, loot Bekarna's Depleted Grimoire (you'll need it for A Rising Star) and touch the device to acquire The Annals of Llengrath, Volume III of V, which will be replaced by The Collected Annals of Llengrath.

    Completing Root and Branch

After you're done with this area, and with The Collected Annals of Llengrath in hand, return to Llengrath (you may have to approach the lectern at the Restricted Section west exit to trigger this part of the quest).
Deny Llengrath the book, which will break her heart and cause her to never speak to you again, but it will complete the quest. If you give her the book, she'll be overjoyed and gift you Llengrath's Tome of Preservation (grimoire) and 3x Scroll of Withdraw. A third option is to give the book to Tayn first, who will do something mysterious to it before giving it back to you to give back to Llengrath. Whatever you choose, you will complete the Root and Branch quest and earn 11810 XP.

Take the west exit to Restricted Area, the enter the Burrowed Hole to fight Notnok, an imp boss. Focus it while using AOE spells like Maelstrom to take care of the mobs and it should drop before long. Loot the area to acquire Burden (legendary great sword). Near the entrance to Burrowed Hole you can find Kraken Eye (you'll need to meet a Perception check of somewhere between 13-19 to see it), which will let you upgrade a piece of equipment from Superb to Legendary.

If you have the Spore Encrusted Key, use it on the south central door, then take the exit to The Central Stacks. South, loot Aretezzo's Cane (superb club) from the chest. Hit the switch in the next area. Be mindful of traps in the next areas.

In Catalog Room you will find Infested Cat / Boras (pet) and Catalog Record: Bekarna's Celestial Grimoire (A Rising Star).

Throughout the west wing, steal all volumes of The History of Eora (fighting Librarians may be required here), then take them to the westernmost Restricted Area and place them as follows:

    • While scions of forest and adra fought, the dreams of invaders died: The Founding of Readceras
    • They carried potential born of a word and shared like a secret: The Tribe of the People of the Deer

Activate the runes, then pass through to the Restricted Area / Section.

    Restricted Section

Loot the bookshelves south and southeast to acquire the remaining volumes of the History of Eora (V, VIII, X, VI, VII, IX) as well as Recipe - Invigorating Nightmares.

Northwest, fight the Librarian and his minions, then loot Shea's War Staff (superb quarterstaff). Place the books in the lecterns as follows:

    • The two took land and soldiers from the one, and they both gave everything in return: The Three Body Agreement
    • "A hero of the people fell and rose a servant of the crown": The Man Who Would Be Skaen
    • They looked upon the world as it was and were unsatisfied, so they remade it as they thought it should be: The Birth of Engwith
    • "They built an empire founded on compassion and were crushed for their audacity": The Great Orlan Empire

Activate the device between the books, then take the exit back to The Central Stacks.

    The Oratory of Wael

Take the book (Incantations of the Hand) from Chief Librarian Statue as it will allow you to get past the Vault Door (assuming you don't have ~20 Mechanics to just bust through). You'll have to fight a few librarians as a consequence.

Use the book on the door to pass through easily, the take the exit to The Oratory of Wael, where you'll find Maura (a spore-encrusted version of her, anyway), or Fyonlecg, depending on whether you decided to do the Archives or Collections first.

It won't take long before either activates The Oculus, which will fire massive beams of energy at you as you try to take on the Enchanted Armors.

Predict and dodge the beams by positioning everyone in the corner of either stairway while attacking enemies with ranged weapons, then take out the Power Conduit, then repeat for the other side (wait for The Oculus to slowly switch over to the other side before committing). Once both Conduits are down, Maura/Fyonlecg and some Spore Infested Libarians will appear. If you've made it this far without losing many party members, they will drop without much trouble (Temporal Cocoon her/him and focus the librarians if you're struggling).

The following description as well as some descriptions on the next page may not be wholly accurate if you decided to do the Archives first.

Afterward, Fyonlecg will appear in a vision and greet Maura. Loot the area including the east room (Office of the Chief Librarian) to acquire Maura's Grasping Belt and Memoirs of Heldr. Also in the Office of the Chief Librarian, place Bekarna's Grimoire in the lectern, which will become Bekarna's Celestial Grimoire.

    Completing A Rising Star

Give Celestial Grimoire to Bekarna back in Temple of Revelation to complete the quest and earn 11135 XP and 5000 G. Next she will ask for a piece of starmetal (initiating Out of Eternal Horizons), which you can find in The Upper Bowels.

Next to the exit to the Scriptorium, loot the bookcase to find The Sacrifice the Eyeless Face Demands to complete the quest, earning you 15185 XP.
