Octavo, original publisher's full leather decorated in gilt with pictorial onlay to the front panel, all edges gilt, patterned endpapers, illustrated by Mary Grandpre. Boldly signed by J.K. Rowling on the title page. Fine in the original glassine which is in fine condition. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is the first novel in the Harry Potter series and J. K. Rowling's debut novel, first published in 1997 by Bloomsbury. The writing has been compared to that of Jane Austen, one of Rowling's favourite authors, or Roald Dahl, whose works dominated children's stories before the appearance of Harry Potter, and of the Ancient Greek story-teller Homer. It has been translated into several languages and has been made into a feature-length film of the same name.

This is a pristine and unread copy from the "advance reader's edition" (uncorrected proof) produced for reviewers and other book industry insiders in advance of the publication of the first American edition of this first Harry Potter book in September 1998. Please see my attached photos of this book. Note the marketing plan included on the back cover which shows the first printing of the debut American edition was planned at a remarkably low 30,000 copies. The print run of this edition was certainly much lower than that and few remain in such perfect condition.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was chosen as a title for the US market as the UK title (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone) was considered rather obscure. Book is firm, with the a slight lean. Cloth of book is clean with no marks and no rubbing; corners are sharp, one corner is lightly creased, with light bumping to lower boards. No writing or scribbles inside, book is very clean. Text block is clean and unmarked. No dog-eared pages or tears. Jacket is not price-clipped. This is the true first state jacket, with all first points, including The Guardian quote on the rear panel. No discolouration. A very collectable copy of this increasingly hard-to-find title.

Very nice condition but for a dampstain to cloth heel which barely encroaches the gutter at prelims, very slightly visible up to page 17 or so, and a very small faint stain on the red cloth front panel near crown. Tight and unmarked with crisp pages and sharp points, just a hint of a nudge to spine ends. The first printing DJ has a $16.95 price, the yellow bar code field with two bar codes, and the smaller code says 51695. The DJ back has a single quote from the Guardian saying, "Harry Potter could assume the near-legendary status of Roald Dahl's Charlie, of chocolate factory fame." The top spine of the DJ states J. K. Rowling and lacks the Year 1 badge. The DJ in mylar would be fine but for the dampstained heel, which is really only visible on the verso. ; 1; 9.3 X 6.4 X 1.2 inches.
