Don t call me ni er Whitey by Sly and the Family Stone

  1. Don t call me ni er Whitey by Sly and the Family Stone

    G.... G....

Just out of curiosity, does any modern mainstream artist make socially relevant music like this

  2. N.... D....

Don't call me Wigger , Skanky

  3. E.... K....

    Those were the days.
No way in hell this song could be released today.
Freedom was good while it lasted.
    Oh well.....

    E.... K....

    Actually a little known fact....
Don't Call Me Nigger Whitey was really about Whitey Bulger.
    I'm from Boston.
    I know some people....

    E.... K....

Really? Because I've heard rap songs where every other word is Ni double g er

  4. U.... V....

This took balls to say. Perry Farrell and Ice T did it again in 1991. There's no way in hell anyone would ever try it again. Is this progress?

Thank you Sly and the Family Stone for letting me be myself again...

  8. b.... ....

my parents had this on vinyl and i'd listen to it a lot as a kid

  9. T.... B....

    Great!!

  10. T.... L....

Last I heard, Sly was/is addicted to crack, and living in a pull along camper. True !!

    T.... L....

Yes, and still claiming to be writing music. That no one wants to hear. Sad, really...

  11. D.... k....

I'm literally walking down the street in San Diego, C.A. Singing this song to myself in my head. Damn catchy. Should be the National anthem.

  12. D.... k....

I just finished watching "Blackklansman", & this song would have fit perfectly into the picture. Unfortunately, still relevant in 2019.

  13. s.... h....

  21. R.... ....

This song is so marvelously tense.

  22. P.... M....

This song has something that you WON'T see today, both sides of the 'racial spectrum', dig that👍

    P.... M....

yep peace-loving flower children of all colors is what Sly & the family Stone were about comin straight out of San Francisco. Not Oakland but Frisco
however when their music started taking off and they started getting big they went on tour and is a started touring the country they saw places that they never seen before like the racist and bigoted South..and that's what sister Cynthia rest in peace was talking about right there..the culture shock they experienced coming from San Francisco where it was Peace Love get high listen to good music..
but when they started doing tours down there in the South were racism bigotry and hatred of course you know segregation was still around and most people who read Life magazine Through The Years specially back in the day seeing all the hate and everything but for them to see it up close was almost like a culture shock for Sly and the family Stone a great interracial band don't forget

  23. B.... A....

To bad this can’t be played on the radio because it has that awful word. Context means nothing nowadays.

  24. J.... S....

No one from this planet can do/say/be everything Sly has done/said and been and still be alive and just go from a trailer that he was happily living in to five million dollars in his damned 70s. The dude is from the Andromeda Galaxy and can defeat kryptonite with a keyboard riff and and one lyric!

    J.... S....

Sadly he's now back living in a trailer. The cost of addiction.

  25. B.... J....

Bill Burket I am African-American and the vast majority of my friends is White believe it or not. I love them all. Yes I have black friends and Latino friends as well. But that is like 15 to 25%. 98% of my friends is pretty much white. I’m glad that I had a mother and grandmother to teach me to love all people no matter what race, creed, color, or their sexuality.

    B.... B....

@Kayanda Eddings Up to 123% peace, love and friendship. Amen

    B.... B....

Backflip Wheelie you rock dude. Same to you.

    B.... B....

@Kayanda Eddings definitely. Straight, gay, black, white, Christian, Jewish.. every single one of us are here just trying to live our lives

  30. M.... ....

The Balls they had to make a song like this at that time Sly and the family stone are Legendary

    M.... ....

@Willie Gordon Then I was misinformed. I heard about it more recently than that. Like a year ago. By the way, Back then we had what was referred to as underground radio and FM radio was in a lot of cases non-commercial. (no advertisers) and dj's played what ever they liked. "hippie stations"

    M.... ....

Willie Gordon actually radio did play it. FM Radio was a pivotal medium in the late sixties and early seventies. No you did not hear it on AM it was mainstream but on FM. The Family Stone was all about breaking barriers and getting both black and white to see our commonalities and to cross divisions.

    M.... ....

Willie Gordon: Sadly you could not even think about doing a song like this today too many butt hurt people out there.

    M.... ....

@John Taylor The great old days of radio.

    M.... ....

True, they are legendary. Sad what happened to Sly, though. He was used and thrown away. His band and music, though, were revolutionary...

  31. c.... s....

good classic.. my oldest brother was into sly and the family stone... i always was into this song.. cause of the rhythm and the lyrics.. yet . it hits on that base of racialism...

  32. P.... S....

Sly invented funk music. Don't like this song much, but this guy really never got the credit he deserved. So, thank you for lettin' me be myself..

    P.... S....

    James Brown invented funk music

    P.... S....

@Charles 91771 I agree. Godfather of Soul was an odd title for the guy that created funk. When he asked Nolen if he could play a 9th "all night"? I think that's the beginning of funk right there.

  33. D.... H....

DeQn Sue "Bloody Monster" brought me here

  38. K.... R....

I was 10 years old when my parents had me sit down in the living room, and listen to this whole album. Along with that, dad gave me the lyrics to follow. The Valuable lessons learned from this way of living is Priceless!

  40. L.... M....

This song is like the soundtrack for race relations in the United States.

    L.... M....

I have this record. It makes more sense than yoko ohno doing women are the ☆☆☆☆☆ of the world.

    L.... M....

Why would you be too AFRAID to type the word " nigger" when you're commenting on a song who's main theme is meaningless of the word?

  41. M.... L....

  43. T.... A....

    the national anthem for half-breeds...

  44. 5.... ....

Donald Trump and Obama should serenade each other with this song on national tv

    5.... ....

obama is mixed race though. calling him black is just more of america's racism. it's the "one drop rule". in the past any white person who had "just one drop of black blood" was seen as less of a person.

    5.... ....

5burowz And devicevly...the KGB will watch..it's what they do, don't call me just don't call me.

    5.... ....

Vasectomy Fail Yep, liberals were so anxious to have a black president that they used an idea that should be antithetical to their beliefs, one that was used to further racism.

    5.... ....

When did you ever heard President Trump use that word?

  45. B.... R....

  50. 1.... ....

The tragedy of Sly is he let drugs consume his life. He had so much potential to be a force for good in the entertainment industry and for the world. Still love him though.

    1.... ....

  55. I.... A....

    What did I just watch

    I.... A....

Ieshana Alston what you just watched was some hippies from San Francisco back in 1967 during the summer of Love who made it big in 1968 led by a DJ from the radio who formed the one of the first interracial bands. This song was about the experiences they had when they went to the southern part of the United States and saw first hand racism and hatred like they could never believe and Sly Stone basically just wanted to unite people and party drugs and music man so when they saw this ugly part of America and you have to remember was a lot darker time in America we had Vietnam it was power without the flower people are becoming more social conscious finding a voice and yet the racism and the bigotry still was very very predominant in certain parts of our country so basically because Sly and the Family Stone for the most part we're black they're almost like hippies and they could not believe what they seen in parts of the country and Sly basically just create crafted this funky hard-hitting tune describing what they seen. So hopefully that makes sense to you and it puts more into perspective what the song is really about

    I.... A....

    Nothing! 😁

  56. F.... K....

So many memories. A friend and I used to sing this song walking dawn the streets in the 60's just to freak the weak. He was black and I'm whitey :) Thank you for having the gonads to post it.Ohhh memory lane.

  67. 1.... ....

Sly was a genius with all his lyrics.  This song made so much sense when it came out, and brought people of all races together even if just for a little while when it came out.
Another great Sly line:  "Don't hate the black, don't hate the white, if you get bit, just hate the bite."

    1.... ....

    you are so Correct!!!!!

    1.... ....

    1blastman

    1.... ....

I was fortunate enough to see him in concert once in the 70's . Of course everyone got along back then. When he started singing this song the entire crowd stood cheered and started hugging each other and shaking hands regardless of color , race , religion . There were no stranger that night only friends who had just met for the first time.

    1.... ....

    1blastman wow

    1.... ....

That's because we were all pretty high around that time.

  68. A.... M....

Can somebody get this ugly white boy off my account

  69. D.... G....

I would cruise the streets of Detroit in a bright red 65 Vette convertible playing this song (and others) at full volume and think "that's cool". Nobody thought anything of it! Of course that was then, this is now.

  70. D.... J....

Great song & great points in it. It basically was telling everyone to cut the racism out, but that point went way over everyone's heads: YEOOWWNNN!!! YOU'LL NEVER HEAR ANOTHER SONG LIKE THIS AGAIN!!

    D.... J....

I love them. All their songs are timeless classics, "everybody is a star" is MY SHIT!!

    D.... J....

I like to call it the Blazing Saddles P.C. world we live in..Many see or hear N.word and simply have a shitfit. But those who know the real meaning as you say are in the know

    D.... J....

Actually Jane’s Addiction and Body Count did a remake. Here’s the link: https://youtu.be/FtAIjGBZ-DQ Check it out, its dope!

    D.... J....

@Trucker Kev The Paid Tourist What is the" real" meaning of that word?

    D.... J....

@Willie Gordon whichever way you decide to interpret it.
if you take it the way it's used like in this particular song what is urging people to get along and the fact that Sly and the family Stone were an interracial band and almost all black Sylvester is who wrote the thing one will see the meaning..

  71. S.... o....

I can't believe how racist everyone is.  Could we all just join hands and pray for peace?  (:.-.(

    S.... o....

@veronica Alleyne I will hold my breath as I reach for the next hand to hold as we gaze upwards where the birds fly so high in the sky above us all down here below them.

    S.... o....

@Syndicate of Surf this is just a song I remembered hearing on the radio when I was a kid, nothing more than a trip down memory lane for me

    S.... o....

    prayer is useless

    S.... o....

    I pray you are wrong.

    S.... o....

Syndicate of Surf We are Not all racists. But the media would have you believe we are.

  72. i.... ....

Heyyyyyyyyyy...Don't call me nigga whitey!  Don't call me whitey, nigga!  Who can say that in 2015?  NOBODY!  Sly told the white people what fo!  But you can't say now.  LMAOOOOOO hahahahahhahahahahaha

  73. i.... ....

When this song came up,Sly was saying to the people, nigga, whitey, neither means anything.  We're all the same.  But he was also saying to white people..."Don't call me nigga".  It's a juxtaposition and a "cut back at the white folks".  Sly was pretty smart!

  74. D.... K....

When this song came out we all "got it". High school bands played it at dances like any other top 40 song. We all sang along and laughed....never a fight. It was the time of the season as the zombies sang. Today it would be "don't call me N word" lol

    D.... K....

It's called the PC Blazing Saddles bitching moaning whining and crying..

    D.... K....

@eilliw nodrod well of course it was maybe take a look was all the inbreds on the best part about it is in the end the black man was the most intelligent one out of the all in the movie.
the problem with that being said are the people that watch it in here and then bomb and they get all butt hurt over it everywhere they don't realize this was a young political correct times of the 70s is what it was just like this song you can England say faggot quite a bit if you want to

    D.... K....

But the people who say don't call me nigger are the same ones who call other black people nigger.

  75. v.... A....

I remember this on the radio when I was a kid

    v.... A....

@veronica Alleyne ...and I was severely reprimanded for singing this song by my father. I from the land were Sly rose to fame and was very popular.

    v.... A....

@veronica Alleyne u will never hear it on the radio again...at least not on any stations colin powell's kid owns.... the radio is so owned by the big dogss now ...maybe college radio

    v.... A....

@jim gardam I on't even listen to the radio anymore except for Pandora, not interested in hearing the same song 5 times in an hour

    v.... A....

I know that, the era of fr that kind of protest is over, everybody's too afraid to be politically incorrect now & like it or not, there is a place for mutual respect to a point if it gets everybody to the table talking & not simply distracted by mundane details, I could go on

    v.... A....

yes and we sang it around the house

  76. M.... G....

by this point i had read most of the beat generation and lenny was my hero dead or not
janis was kicking ass out of the state of texas, so i knew there was life away from it
one of my top 25 songs of my era :) which means one of the best songs ever!

  77. W.... W....

  78. T.... M....

CrimeDog is CORRECT! Just a word mispronounced by the ghetto English who could not speak proper English themselves.

    T.... M....

Doesn't make it right, history geniuses!

  79. D.... K....

memories of high school dances and remembering how we all knew the true meaning of this song...before it was censored to the N word

  80. J.... ....

This song is basically a reprimand to people of both colors.

  81. N.... ....

... Ok, I'm pretty sure I established a point. Either I'm too stupid to convey it, or you're too stupid to understand it. I'm going to venture to guess it's the latter, but I realize I am biased.

  82. T.... W....

but the harshness came with people racist white people

  83. T.... W....

    what's that suppose to mean????

  84. T.... W....

Just shows that deep down they wish they were black or colored! #POW

  85. T.... W....

I can't stand when white people say why can't they use the word "nigga" the word was created by black people now the word NIGGER however was created by white prejudice people from slavery and we ALL KNOW that story right??? exactly!!! white people intended for the word NIGGA TO BE USED AS A way to lower our character as African Americans and meant for the word to be spelled NIGGER! so before white people who feels that they are "entitled" to freedom of speech just remember and that>>>

    T.... W....

Taylor Woodruff How old are you ??? You have no idea what you are talking about. That’s what happens when you learn history from YouTube
