"Nothing this side of a semi-trailer can beat the 8.0-tonne towing capacity of the Ram 2500, when used with a goose-neck style hitch for pulling big stuff such as horse trailers."

If you have been following MoparInsiders.com or our sister site 5thGenRams.com, you have seen many of the upcoming 2019 Ram Heavy Duty variants in various spy photos. We recently broke down those spy photos, to show how we believe that the new Ram Heavy Duty will keep its 4th generation Ram body. But, we really haven’t talked too much about the cab configurations.

When the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 made its debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in January, one of the highlights of the truck was the much roomier Crew Cab models. Thanks to loopholes in emissions regulations, making the truck longer and increasing the cab size of the trucks, allowed the truck to have a bigger carbon footprint. Heavy Duty models don’t follow the same regulations as their half-ton siblings.

But the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 Crew Cab has rear seat that can recline (similar to the Mega Cab Heavy Duty models). But if that is the case, what is the need for a Mega Cab model? Let’s look at the dimensions of the 2019 Ram 1500 Crew Cab rear passenger compartment and the 2018 Ram 2500 Mega Cab rear passenger compartment…

  • Reclining Angle: 8-degrees (2019 Ram 1500 Crew Cab) vs 22-degrees (2018 Ram 2500 Mega Cab)
  • Legroom: 45.2-inches (2019 Ram 1500 Crew Cab) vs 43.3-inches (2018 Ram 2500 Mega Cab)

Since the new 2019 Ram Heavy Duty models do share most of the body with the current trucks, it makes sense to keep the Mega Cab since the 2019 models are not getting the new Crew Cab from the Ram 1500.

Our friends at Real Fast Fotography were kind enough to send us over a few examples of various Heavy Duty prototypes that appear to be Mega Cab models. From these pictures, we can definitely see the larger cabs on the upcoming Ram 2500/3500 models.

While the exterior of the Mega Cab will remain close to the current model year trucks. The interior will be vastly different. 5thGenRams showed us with spy photos they obtained of the dash of the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty sharing overall design and much of its layout with the all-new 2019 Ram 1500.

The 2019 Ram 1500’s high-tech features include a new class-exclusive and easy-to-use 12.1-inch fully configurable touchscreen display; the first-time debut of the all-new SiriusXM with 360L; the most powerful audio system ever available in a pickup – 900-watt Harman Kardon with 19 speakers; personal device integration and in-vehicle connectivity. We expect much of the same, for the 2019 Ram Mega Cab models.

The bonded flush 12.1-inch reconfigurable touchscreen with tailor-made graphics for various Ram models makes personalization easy with the new split-screen, operating two different applications for the desired configuration, such as Apple CarPlay and HVAC controls, or one application, such as navigation across the entire 12.1-inch touchscreen. Available will be a 360-degree Surround View Camera system providing a birds-eye view via four cameras positioned around the vehicle to create a fully stitched image (you will see a flap in the camouflage on the front grille area, indicating where the front camera will be underneath the “A” in the “RAM” text in the grille).

Customers who prefer not to use the touchscreen for HVAC will find redundant controls located on both sides of the display for convenience. Uconnect systems with the class-exclusive 12.1-inch display also feature the next level of audio entertainment with the all-new SiriusXM with 360L. Ram also offers Uconnect 4 system with or without navigation on an 8.4-inch display and a Uconnect 3 system with a 5-inch display.

We also know the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty will feature the same center console as the all-new Ram 1500. To ensure that passengers remain conveniently connected, 1500 owners can already manage their personal device connectivity with a plethora of electronic charging options. Located in the reimagined center console, a wider docking area offers an all-new optional integrated wireless charging pad that can hug a small tablet or multiple smartphones. To keep devices charged, there are five USB ports (three are in front of the center console and two are in the back). Three of the USB ports will be fully functioning and communicate with the UConnect interface while the other two USB ports are charge only. Four of the five USB ports are new type C/A ports that allow devices to be charged up to four times faster than standard USB outlets. The remaining USB is type A.

We will know more about this much-upgraded truck when the new 2019 Ram Heavy Duty makes its debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Michigan this January.
