Does Pravana VIVIDS go on wet or dry hair?

  • Please help, I'm trying to dye my hair with pravana vivids blue and magenta but for some reason the dye won't stick. I have tried twice now but its still really patchy, with some parts not even dyed. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, I bleached from my natural hair so there is no other dye on it. I used to use directions in the past which worked great, any help on why it won't work. Thank you

  • a few thoughts: is your hair wet when you dye it? that can dilute it. or if you have conditioner on your hair before you dye it? have you bleached your hair a few times? some parts may have been over-processed and so they aren't taking the dye. parvana might just be a rubbish dye, i don't know much about it.

"although everything you own will be this colour too because it bleeds like an extra in 300" -bekki, 23/2/12

  • I only bleached my hair once, no conditioner but my hair was a bit wet. I will try again on dry hair if it doesn't work I might use directions even though it doesn't last long on my hair. Thank you

  • I've always been led to believe that Pravana is a freakin' awesome dye, so it'a bizarre how it isn't showing up! I know Urs loves them so maybe get in touch with her for some advice?

  • Also suggest wait a few days after bleaching your hair to let some of the natural oils return to the hair. Dyeing over dry hair is better than wet hair, because water will dillute the dye. You hair may be too porus in spots to take the dye. Leaving the dye on for an hour to two hours usually causes the color to last longer than leaving on for a half hour or 15 minutes.

  • Thank you for the advice guys, I will leave it a few days before I try again. I'm so glad I have some time off work so I can hide out till I can fix this mess

Does Pravana VIVIDS go on wet or dry hair?

  • disagree with andya, i've never had any issues with dying straight after bleaching and shampooing

"although everything you own will be this colour too because it bleeds like an extra in 300" -bekki, 23/2/12

  • In fact all direct dyes I've used say they should be used on clean hair.

  • I have never had problems before, with other dyes ( directions, manic panic etc). I'm not sure why its not working

Does Pravana VIVIDS go on wet or dry hair?

  • Your hair at least will need to be a level 7 to show up. Once its light enough ,you apply it, it sets on for 30min. After this you only rinse with cold water only. Not warm. You have to wait a full 3 days to wash again. When you do use color safe shampoo and you only want to wash with cold water. The least times you shampoo the longer itll last.

  • You can only apply with clean hair. So before using the color wash and do not use conditioner.

*updated September 2017I began using bright colors in my hair when I was twelve, and in the last twenty two years I have tried just about every brand there is. Pravana is by far the most long lasting color option out there. (I do use Joico, Arctic Fox, and Sparks sometimes, but they don't stay in my hair as long). Ion colors are not worth using, and are by far the worst I have tried. If you want excellent results, use excellent products. Morrocanoil is a favorite of mine to rehydrate hair after bleaching, as is Olaplex 1, and 2. My favorite shampoos are Oribe, Kerastase, and Caviar. I use Batiste dry shampoo (it doesn't strip much color, is low priced, and works so well that I only wash my hair once a week). I have my routine and products down solid, and as a result am able to strip my hair again and again, but it still remains shiny and healthy looking. I usually only touch up colors once a month, and this is only to rehydrate and add shine, not because the colors have faded. Pastels are higher maintenance, and I touch them up every week/ every other week depending on shade.Dark colors don't require your hair to be lightened to a nine or ten, but I prefer to have my hair pre lightened to the color of the inside of a banana peel anyway. Platinum hair as a foundation equals beautiful fade when your colors do start to go. Instead of having ugly brassy colors, you will have nice looking pastels.I slather my hair in coconut oil the night before bleaching (I like Schwartzkopf developer and use forty), and apply bleach directly onto oiled hair the next day. I don't find that adding Olaplex 1 to developer does much. However, after rinsing out the bleach in cold water, I apply Olaplex 1 (don't shampoo the bleach out, just rinse). I squeeze out excess water and Olaplex mix, and then work Olaplex 2 in as well. This is left in overnight. In the morning I dampen my hair and work Morrocanoil into it. It seems like a lot of product, but through trial and error I've found a great way to keep my super processed hair strong and awesome. I leave all this in for at least a few hours or overnight again. (I wear hats and put my hair up to leave the house during this process- no shame in my game). I rinse and wash in cold over the sink, and don't bother using conditioner since I will either be bleaching again or adding in Pravana. I have to strip my color twice as my hair is dark, a level 3, so this whole process gets repeated again.Dilute Pravana colors with regular conditioner to make your own shades and pastels. Don't shampoo after the rinse, just rinse with cold water to minimize color bleeding. Leave hair unwashed for about a week to keep your color longer.Pravana' green isn't green. It is teal. If you want green you can mix your own shades using yellow (regular or neon depending on how bright you want to go) for your base and adding tiny amounts of blue. Arctic Fox has some nice shades of green, but they don't stay in my hair as long.Pravan's silver makes an awesome toner that lasts indefinitely if you want an ash blonde look, but you have to cut it with conditioner a bit over half the total mix. (The super blonde pic I added I used the silver as toner mixed one part Pravana and two and a half parts conditioner)Happy coloring! I'm happy to answer questions as well if you have any.

As someone who will no longer touch their hair with bleach or permanent hair dye, I had to find a semi permanent dye that still gave me some depth of color I wanted and lasted more than a few weeks. Pravana is it.
Almost all semi permanent hair dyes (especially ones that show up on darker hair) are going to stain and be hard to work with. I’ve been using them for almost 8 years now and have it pretty much down to a science. I used to have to dye on a Friday because I’d have stains on my head, neck, ears, hands etc and couldn’t go to work the day after. I now can dye the night before and go to work the next day.
I got a lot of these tips from other Amazon reviews years back and some were my own discoveries. Nonetheless I’m passing them to you. If you do not want to stain yourself or your bathroom, try the following…
    - Cover your sink and counter top with a trash bag or old towel. No matter how careful you are, a drip is probably going to get on it.
    - Same with the floor. Put something under you.
    - Put Vaseline or aquaphor (a lot of it) all around your neck, forehead, temples, ears, arms (unless you wear long sleeves) sides of your cheeks.. everywhere color could touch (it will touch your skin no matter how careful you are).
    - get a cheap hair dressers cover. I wrap mine so the open sides wrap towards the front of me and the closed section is in the back. Pull it up to your back hairline and fasten as best you can. If it slips down, the vaseline gives you protection.
    - Wear gloves when you apply the dye, rinse the dye and the first and sometimes second time you wash with shampoo. Same with when you brush it after the first rinse or two. It’s going to bleed and will stain when the dye is still really potent in your hair so wearing gloves until it’s dry will prevent staining.
    - Use a color applying brush. It doesn’t matter too much on which end you start with since there’s no developer. I find starting at the top gets less dye on my arms. If you get dye on your skin, you can remove with old rag or paper towel at the end. I get all the color on and then wipe everything off with an old rag or paper towel. There’s usually no staining since I used Vaseline but if there’s any left, soap and water in the shower will take the rest off. I usually have no staining when I get out after the first rinse.
    - I usually leave the color in overnight since my hair is so dark. You do not need to do this. It has never harmed my hair (I think it feels amazing after) and I personally feel I get better color this way. I wrap my hair in a Walmart bag and make sure it’s covering my neck and tie the two handles towards the front of my head. Sometimes I double bag. Never had stains on my pillow when I woke up.
    - If you have a clogged or slow draining tub, you will have massive staining first couple of rinses. Even if you don’t you will probably have some staining. If any color gets on the walls as you are rinsing, immediately take a cup of water and rinse it. It may or may not get it all off or you may see a hue of color depending on how much dye was there. I have a trick for any color left.
    - Immediately after getting out of the shower, wrap your hair in an old towel. It will stain the towel and any drops can stain your floor. Get all the water out you can so your hair isn’t dripping.
    - spray your tub the second you can! I use the Clorox bathroom cleaner with bleach. It comes right off. Regular bleach in water will get it off too if you fill up your tub and let it sit. But I found the spray is much easier. Spray and rinse or spray and wipe. Both work for me. You can never tell the tub was purple or blue afterwards. Also works if you get it on tile or sink. Careful though because sometimes a blob of the dye has gotten directly on my sink and even with bleach it still had some discoloration. That’s why I cover my entire counter now.
    - Also watch out for doors and walls! You may think you are father away than you are and brush up against it. Same when applying the color. Careful not to get drips on the wall or front of your sink. A magic eraser has worked for walls for me before but sometimes nothing got the color out depending on the wood.

I know I seems like a lot but it’s worth it to have colored hair without the damage. My hair is so long now and finally doesn’t feel like straw. Pravana gives me the best color on non bleached darker hair and it lasts a good 2 months for me. All those steps above ensure I am NOT staining my skin and needing to scrub it off before work and that my bathroom stays dye free.

Love this! First time dying my 37 year old hair a bright color. I have naturally dark hair so I bleached it with box bleach first 3 times. I could have gone lighter, but I was going to dye over it anyway. My hair really is perfectly fine and not damaged... Hair is still soft and can't say I noticed much of any breakage. Just don't leave bleach on too long and use some oil as a buffer.

I'm a total noob, but used the violet and then tried to blend the fuschia pravana into the violet. This isn't damaging at all as a semi permanent and hair felt quite soft afterwards. I don't think permanent is necessary for vivid colors since it will fade anyway so semi permanent is the way to go for less damage.

Only negative is the mess, but I was prepared ahead of time from reading reviews. I didn't go as crazy as some reviewers with plastic all over the bathroom and it was fine. Just went slowly with a brush so it didn't drip. Wrapped my hair in a plastic bag. Used cold water slowly first to rinse in the tub so it doesn't splash all over before just taking a regular shower.

The direct dye is very easy to use. Just used a brush/bowl. I'm not an expert at all.

Picture is not filtered at all. Probably took the picture after washing it 3 times. The color expectedly will slowly fade so you can add some of this to a conditioner if you'd like, but I don't care and mostly wanted to test out fun colors. It doesn't fade ugly or any weird colors Would buy again. I didn't have any negative experience and this does the job and is quality and leaves hair undamaged.

ETA: A good month and a half later and I'm still pretty happy with the color. It doesn't look ugly or anything or change weird colors. It dulls down beautifully if that makes sense. Refreshed it a bit so it is more bright and to use up the rest of the remaining tubes. Purple color for the most part remained, just dulled down a bit but you could still tell it was purple and pink was somewhat there, but parts of blonde mostly showing. Definitely would buy pravana again if I wanted bright colors in the future. Easy to apply and use.

I’ve been using Manic Panic forever and wasn’t happy with their orange (Electric Tiger Lily) other than the fact that it glows in UV light - otherwise it washes out within a couple days. This brand is cheaper, and so far, has blown me away with its color. It even made my hair shiny! My ends were bleached and extremely damaged. The manic panic was just laying the color over the hair and gave me very dull, chalky looking orange hair. This color actually seems to have made my hair silkier and added shine so it looks healthy again! I mixed equal parts orange and yellow from this line to get my color since I figured the orange alone would be too cartoony-looking. I wanted something bright but more natural than straight up carrot orange so I used the yellow to soften it up. My roots are a deep blood red permanent dye and this semi-permanent goes perfect with it.

Right first off it does work so that's good. My hair is red and without pre lightening it made my hair a lovely dark purple. So it's a nice colour. And it smells good going on and after.

Sadly I had a bad time with it. First of all I will admit I didnt do a patch test. I've been doing my own hair at home for over 15 years and have never had a reaction to any brand of hair colour. It went on without any burning and I didnt actually apply it to my scalp as i have dark brown roots growing through so didnt think there was much point. Although the next day my scalp is incredibly sore. So dont be silly like me, do a patch test first.

Its messy! If you know what you are doing you wont make a mess with application, look I'm not an idiot or doing this for the first time ever. But as soon as I rinsed it out the colour went everywhere. Thankfully it was easy to remove from the bath with bleach. My skin however was stained all over. My face, ears, neck, shoulders, arms ... took 3 hours of scrubbing my skin sore to try and get rid if it, nothing would remove it. I've now woken up the next day and just from sleeping on it it has stained one side of my face again. I'm dreading washing my hair again because of the mess it makes.

Also I ran out before covering all of my hair with it. My hair is only shoulder length so I found that annoying. Luckily I had bit left of another purple that I could use but now my hair is two different shades of purple. I wasnt going to by another tube of it for £20!! It's already more expensive here (by £7) than my usual retailer for hair colour (that dont currently have stock of it due to covid 19)
Wont buy again mainly because of the staining of my skin. Such a shame cus it's a lovely colour.

You can really customise the colour dependant on how much product you use. I have naturally brown roots with died blonde ends (see before photo) .The first time I tried only about 6 drops together with a colour mixing pot of conditioner- came out a lovely lavender like colour.
The next time I wanted to try how vibrant I could make it so used about a third of the tube mixed with minimal conditioner and had a beautiful deep purple. It’s been on now for 3 weeks and only just started to fade and I Do wash my hair daily. No colour has ever come out on my white pillow cases so I’m super impressed. Will stain your cuticles temporarily but doesn’t stain sink or shower. - most definitely recommend.

I read so many review on this before taking the plunge. I'd tried the Pravana Vivids Locked-In but had been really disappointed with the purple colour being much too pink and it only lasting a week before serious fade.

I totally love the vibrant colour that this gives. I didn't have this all over I just had my sister weave out some lower layers on one side and used foils to protect the hair I didn't want coloured. Unfortunately when washing out, the colour did bleed onto the untreated hair and you can't really see the highlights. Its more of a solid layer of colour. But because the colour was not added on the top of my hair it still gives the peeking through purple that I was hoping for. (Its hard to explain so I have included a picture)

Its also turned some of my hair a almost silvery colour which I actually really like along side the violet.
Oh and you only have to use the smallest amount. I used this neat and you can barely tell any has left the tube.

Be warned that this does stain EVERYTHING it touches but this came out really easily with little bleach.

I only did my colour yesterday so can't yet comment on how it fades but will update my review in a few weeks. At the moment I am loving my purple and blond hair. Its exactly what i was hoping for and is proper purple not a sort of pinky purple.

    Will def use again!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW WOW WOW - intense colour, lasts ages

Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on January 14, 2017

WOW! this is an amazing colour. So vibrant and shiny with real depth of colour - strong pigment. I have had SOOOOO many compliments since I used this. Even my hairdresser commented how deep the pigment and colour was and I have been washing it every day for 9 days and the colour is still as intense as when I first put it on (I have bleached 'pieces' against a base black colour over the rest of my head). I have used Crazy Colour and Artic Fox and this beats both of them hands-down for pigment colour strength and vibrancy (I used Violet). Unlike the others, the colour stays true after washing and so far I haven't had a fade effect as I get with the other colours.
The only small downside is that you do get colour rub off - although it does clean up easily: just take a bottle of diluted bleach/water spray into the shower with you each time. But this is a small price to pay for such an amazing colour. Will definitely be buying this again

Do you put Pravana on wet or dry hair?

Perfection is applied to damp hair. Please be sure the hair is just damp to the touch. If the client's hair holds a lot of water, give it a quick blowdry to damp before applying the product. Also, timing is 15 minutes, but you can increase it to 30 minutes for thicker coarser hair.

How do you use Pravana ChromaSilk Vivids?

To use the Chriomasilk range, follow the instructions below:.
Choose from Chomasilk Vivids Colour chart..
    Do not add any developer..
Apply Pravana Chroma colour directly, straight from the tube..
Allow colour to process for 30 minutes..
Use the colour at room temperature. ... .
    Thoroughly wash out the colour..

Can you put Pravana Vivids under heat?

PRAVANA VIVIDS MOOD COLOR is a heat-activated temporary hair color that transforms hair with a color-changing effect! Just add heat and watch the transition happen instantly, then change back when it cools.

How do you mix Pravana Vivids?

Mixing ratio 1 : 1 ½ . Use with 10 Volume Crème Developer for maximum deposit or 20 Volume Crème Developer for lighter, brighter results. To use with ChromaSilk Crème Hair Color, mix equal parts VIVIDS Everlasting into ChromaSilk Crème Hair Color to enhance the color.
