Can I change my name to a symbol?

Converts your name into symbols, like in the TikTok trend. Originally based on the Symbolq for Telegram 2 translator on InstaFonts.io

What are "name symbols"?

It's being called the name symbols or symbol name trend on TikTok, and it's basically where you convert your name into symbols using the above translator, or using another equivalent translator like these:

  • Symbolq on Telegram 2
  • Name to Symbols - TikTok

The symbols are actually Unicode characters, just like the other characters on your keyboard, except they are "rare" - usually they're characters that are from non-English languages, or ancient character sets like Egyptian Hieroglyphs.

It can be kinda fun to see what your name looks like when it's put into symbol form. You can also convert any word to symbols, and any English to symbols. Some other languages will work so long as they use mostly the same characters as English.

Once you've converted your name into symbols using this generator, you can copy and paste the name symbols into your bio or display name on TikTok to hop on the trend! You can also use these symbols in other places too - any place that you want some cute and aesthetic symbols :3

TikTok users are transforming their names into a series of symbols as part of a new trend, to use as their display names or phone wallpapers — here’s how to try it out for yourself.

The popularity of short-form video app TikTok doesn’t appear as though it will lessen any time soon, as more users join every day to partake in some of the app’s biggest trends and challenges, and to browse the huge range of content on the app.

New trends are popping up just about every day, and while some of them can be done using the tools available on TikTok itself, sometimes you’ll need to use a third-party tool to join in on the fun.

The ‘symbol name’ trend has proven to be quite popular throughout June and July, and sees users turning their name, or the name of someone else, into a series of symbols. These symbols are then used as their display name or wallpaper so that it acts as more of an inside reference.

For those who don't know, Prince legally changed his name to a made-up unpronounceable symbol in the early 90's to sidestep restrictions in the contract he had signed with his record company, Warner, which at the time had the rights to use the name "Prince" for music and merchandise.

After the legal name change, news outlets started calling him "the artist formerly known as Prince." Meanwhile, Warner had no rights to the new, unpronounceable name. Warner executives likely were not too happy about that, but couldn't do anything about it.

In 2000, after the contract with Warner expired, Prince went back to using his old name.

Is the part about him legally changing his name really true? All the sources say so, but surely there are laws and regulations around name changes in the US. I have a hard time imagining the IRS having him down as the symbol.

Also, changing your name can't be a legal way of getting out of contracts, can it? If it is, then someone should let Ke$ha know...

I've heard several different reasonings over the years. I don't think it actual got him out of a contract but it allowed him to screw the record company. His new 'name' was difficult to market and they had the rights to the 'Prince' name, not his new one, so any new merchandise they created would not be matching the name he was now marketing himself under. Fans are going to listen to him and not the record company. So all in all he was just screwing them out of money and making their job difficult but it didn't actually end any contract.

svantana: for the purpose of Warner enforcing its contract with Prince, he legally changed his stage name, i.e., the name of his act.

Looking at the discography and discussion on the Wikipedia artivle, I don't think the name change got him out of his contract. It seems that he had to release a certain number of albums to finish his contract. I think by using the symbol on those albums, he prevented Warner brothers from having rights to use his name in connection with it. He probably negotiated his next contract a bit differently.

What he did was start turning the crank, churning out five albums in three years, since the contract stipulates a certain number of albums to be produced. Which leads one to wonder if he didn't want the Prince "branding" applied to this work; maybe he thought the label was meddling too much and it wasn't really his work?

I remember when Prince did that soon after Weird Al Yankovic said he was going to legally change his name to Prince but Prince said no.

I knew about the name change but not the reason. I had always chalked it up to hubris on his part. Thanks :)

Can you have a symbol in your name?

The law bans names that contain “obscenity, numerals, symbols, or a combination of letters, numerals, or symbols…”, but naming a child after a mass murderer is A-OK. In most cases, the United States is pretty relaxed about what you can name your child when it comes to the stigma or meaning a name may carry.

When you change your name, it will go into some database. Same with drivers license, property records, voter registration, bank accounts, credit cards, airplane reservations. NONE of these databases can handle EMOJI.

Is it difficult to change your name?

It's a long process. While a legal document such as a marriage certificate or court granted petition will allow you to change your name, it won't be truly official until you've submitted name change applications with the Social Security Administration, the DMV, and other relevant institutions.
