Birmingham is booming with young graduates, eager entrepreneurs and those looking to find good jobs, innovate and give back to their community. Here are the top Birmingham neighborhoods for those who prioritize networking over Netflix:

1. Downtown Birmingham

Best places to live in birmingham, al for young professionals

Over on the Northside, downtown Birmingham puts you right in the middle of the action. Tons of local businesses and companies are located in downtown, making the restaurants and bars, like Bamboo on Second, The Collins and Carrigan’s, perfect for chatting up colleagues after work. Living in the area also gives you the potential to walk to work, which is always a plus.

2. Southside
Probably most important to the young professional, Southside is affordable. An easy commute to UAB and Samford, and close to great restaurants and nightlife, like Buck Mulligan’s and Dave’s, this neighborhood is in a prime location that won’t break the bank.

3. Woodlawn
If you’re looking for something a little more trendy, Woodlawn is for you. After undergoing a recent revitalization, this neighborhood is very upcoming, with plenty of commercial space for businesses and a focus on preserving culture and community.

4. Avondale
Sometimes it’s nice to leave work behind at the end of the day, but that’s hard to do in the middle of downtown. Avondale is close enough to all of the major hubs of Birmingham, while offering a break from the corporate feel. With local breweries and restaurants in the area (Fancy’s, Avondale Brewing Co. and Saturn come to mind), it’s a great place to unwind after a long day.

5. Edgewood
A charming little neighborhood right outside of downtown Homewood, Edgewood offers the young professional a more suburban feel. The downtown area has nice shops and restaurants, Taco Mama and Sam’s included, but without the overwhelming bustling of the city.
