America’s birthday is just around the corner and you know what that means? Fireworks, barbecues, and the good old red, white, and blue for the whole family. With thousands of miles of coastline and waterfront beaches, pine forests, and more, Maine is a great place to spend the long holiday weekend this year. 

1. Houlton Agricultural Fair, Houlton, ME

Why not celebrate the birth of America 50 feet up in the air on the Ferris Wheel? The Houlton Agricultural Fair runs over the holiday weekend this year providing loads of fun for the whole family. Enjoy events like the Lumberjack Competition which includes axe throwing and cross trunk sawing, a Charity Motorcycle Rally, and the famous Demolition Derby. 

2. Bar Harbor 4th of July, Bar Harbor, ME

July 4 is the official start of the tourist season in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park and what better way to celebrate than with a day-long celebration? Bar Harbor’s Fourth of July celebration has been ranked by the Today Show as No. 1 in the country. Start the morning with a blueberry pancake breakfast put on by the local Rotary Club and end with fireworks and the Bar Harbor Town Band on the Village Green. 

3. Eastport 4th of July, Eastport, ME

Uniquely positioned as the most eastern town of Maine and just a hop, skip, and a jump from Canada, Eastport is the perfect place to celebrate both the Fourth of July and Canada Day. Enjoy a showing of the movie, Independence Day, at the Sutherland Amphitheater and tour the USS Lassen. Don’t forget to head over to Deer Isle to celebrate Canada Day on the first. 

4. Freeport 4th of July, Freeport, ME

Hosted by L.L. Bean, the Fourth of July celebrations start with one of Maine’s premier 10K road races and ends with a free concert by Devon Gilfillan and fireworks. In between the race and the fireworks, you can enjoy a day of shopping in the many outlet stores downtown. 

5. Ocean Park Annual 4th of July Parade, Ocean Park, ME

Head down to Ocean Park and Old Orchard Beach to celebrate the Fourth of July with everything red, white, and blue. Start your morning with the annual Ocean Park Fourth of July Parade and end your evening watching the fireworks over the Pier. Make sure you pick up some famous pier fries from the Original Pier French Fries! 

6. Thomaston Maine 4th of July Event, Thomaston, ME

For a small town, Thomaston sure knows how to throw a Fourth of July bash. Enjoy a day of Old Fashion Fourth of July Celebrations on the coast of Maine. There are plenty of events, like the morning pancake breakfast, 5K Firecracker race, live music, and pet shows that will keep the whole family busy until the fireworks start when the sun goes down. 

7. Bangor on the 4th, Bangor, ME

With a pancake breakfast, morning parade, concerts, and fireworks, Bangor knows how to throw a Fourth of July bash. The Stone Doctors concert in the afternoon benefits the Eastern Maine Medical Center Foundation so get there early for front row seats. Fireworks start at 9:30 p.m. over the Penobscot River. 

8. Naples Independence Day Celebrations, Naples, ME

Every year, thousands of people, both on land and boats, head to the Naples Causeway to watch the fireworks explode in colorful displays over the beautiful Long Lake. In the afternoon gather the whole family and bring them to the festive parade going from Naples Town Office to the Umbrella Factory. Afterward you can enjoy drinks at Rick’s Café, cones at the Causeway Dairy Bar, and shopping along the Causeway for the rest of the day. 

9. Bath Heritage Days, Bath, ME

This celebration goes on for several days straight. Sponsored by No Coward Soul, the Times Record, 98.9 WCLZ, and many more, this celebration has jam packed with family friendly activities that is sure to have something for everyone. The weekend kicks off with a chicken barbecue, a skateboard competition, and the first night of the famous Smokey’s Greatest Show and Carnival. Throughout the weekend enjoy a chili-chowder festival, live entertainment, a marketplace, a car show, and so much more. Finally on July 4 there is a five-mile road race at the City Hall, an Independence Day parade, more live entertainment and so much more. Come hungry because there will be plenty of food and other vendors! Finish the night off with fireworks and everyone will leave happy.

9:00 AM - 3:00 PM Craft Fair/Marketplace
The Island Arts Association will hold a Craft Fair/Marketplace at the YMCA, 21 Park Street, featuring a wonderful selection of Maine crafts, including jewelry, quilts, photographs, pottery, and porcelain dolls. The Bar Harbor (MDI) Rotary Club will be offering delicious lunch options to keep you fueled up for the remainder of the day! Bring the whole family to the Bar Harbor Athletic Field on Park Street to enjoy Maine lobster rolls and crab rolls, hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries, watermelon, chips, water, and sodas. All proceeds from the event support Rotary projects and local nonprofits.
