Taste test: We've long been fans of the delicious waffle-cut fries at Chick-fil-A, so as connoisseurs of potato chips (having reviewed more than 1700 kinds), we were excited that Chick-fil-A was giving potato chips a try. The idea seemed to be to mirror the signature cut of Chick-fil-A's fries, but the chips were actually quite a bit thinner than the fries and had much narrower, shallower ripples. (The chips from Alexia look much more like Chick-fil-A's fries than Chick-fil-A's own chips do!)

We've eaten some similarly cut potato chips from Cape Cod and Herr's. These were somewhat like those other brands, but the chips were generally smaller and less curvy. Also, the ripple cuts on opposite sides didn't overlap as much as the other brands, so fewer chips had a grid of holes from the intersecting ripple troughs (though the grid could easily be seen when holding a chip up to the light). We crunched in to find a solid crunch and a light potato taste initially, with more potato flavor showing up on subsequent chips as the salt built up. Pretty good, but not any sort of standout among all potato chips, nor anywhere near as special as the Chick-fil-A fries!

Got an interesting taste test today. Chick-Fil-A is one of our favorite fast food restaurants to eat at. And yes, California is on a "Safer at home" emergency order. It's going to make for some crazy times ahead. For the moment, drive-thrus are open, so I placed an order using the Chick-Fil-A app to get everyone some lunch.
One of the things I saw that has always intrigued me are the Waffle Potato Chips. We're not going anywhere any time soon, so why not a taste test comparison!

Chick-Fil-A Waffle Chips ($1.99) have existed for years now. Because the regular fries don't hold up well for catering orders, the chips were created.

A closer look at the waffle chips compared to the waffle fries. The holes are a bit smaller than the fries, but they've still got that criss-cross cut.

Taking a look at the back of the bag. There's not a whole lot of ingredients that make up potato chips. Potatoes, Oil, and Salt.

Time to taste them!

First the Chickfila Waffle Fries. When they're fresh, they're delicious. They're not the best french fry ever. That I'd still have to give to McDonalds. But they do have a great potato flavor, especially if you get one that has a bit of the potato skin still on it.

And now the Chick-Fil-A Waffle Potato Chips. They're potatoey and salty. They reminded me a whole lot of regular Ruffles Potato Chips. The chips have a good flavor and a nice crunch.

Time to vote! Which is better? Fries or Chips? At first, they both chose fries, but after a few minutes, Ian changed his mind to chips. The rest of the adults tasting them voted for the waffle fries.

The next few months are going to be interesting.
Stay healthy. Stay safe. Be good to each other.

Who makes the Chick

Who supplies Chick-fil-A's potatoes for Waffle Potato Fries? For nearly 40 years, Eagle, Idaho-based potato company Lamb Weston has provided Waffle Potato Fries™ and Hash Browns to Chick-fil-A® restaurants.

Does Chick

The Waffle Fries are made from potatoes grown by a family-owned business in Washington State, along the Columbia River Basin. The Johnson family has grown potatoes since 1906, which are served across the country in Chick-fil-A restaurants as waffle fries and hash browns.

Does Chick

Kettle-cooked waffle cut potato chips Sprinkled with Sea Salt.

Are Chick

The grilled chicken and chicken nuggets are prepared separately from the fried chicken. The waffle fries are cooked in canola oil while the fried chicken is cooked in peanut oil. That's right—the French fries are safe at a fast-food restaurant!
