I’ve never had expensive shades before. Kind of fell in love with this pair and I’m trying to justify the price Wassup

Have you tried them yet, or is this love a remote affair? The lenses really are something special.

level 1

if they're worth it to you. do you feel like you'd be happy having them given the price then go ahead.

level 1

The lenses are amazing. I’ve been a bit disappointed with the frame quality of 2 metal models (Compass and Fair Winds) but I think the pair you linked would be worth the price

level 1

That's not bad. I just dropped 1,000 on a pair. Prescription though, with the lenses from Maui Jim.

level 1

Did you end up getting these? I’m wondering what the peripheral vision is like when you’re driving.

level 1

They are worth it, go to Costco it’s 1/3 the price

level 2

Wait really? About how much?

level 2

Oh wow, thanks! How is it so much cheaper?!

level 1

Personally i’d say no because I’m not a fan of the frame design (looks like it came from the 90s) but if you like it and if you can pull it off then why not.

Maui Jim seems to be the consensus favorite when searching Maui Jim vs Oakley on reddit. However I was browsing their website and most of their glasses do not fully enclose the eyes. There are a lot of spaces where light can leak through. Whereas Oakleys have more protection the way the lenses are angled.

  1. Any thoughts on why Maui Jim comes so highly recommended yet most of their models let light leak through due to the way the frames are designed?

  2. Why are Oakleys trashed due to being owned by Luxxotica?

  3. Does Luxxotica have any hand in the manufacturing or science that goes into making the actual lenses?

  4. Does Maui Jim do anything better than Oakleys and vice versa?

I had never heard of Maui Jim until the employee at Sunglass Hut recommended them to me. They are more expensive than Ray Ban and a lot of other big designer names. The name "Maui Jim" seems goofy to me, but I do like their styles.

Is it a cool quality brand to wear? And why is it so expensive, since you're obviously not paying for their name?

Hey all,

I purchased a pair of Warby Parker more than a year ago and now I feel like I'm ready for better quality pair of sunglasses. I've been looking at a pair of Maui Jims and I was wondering if it was worth the money for me to replace my old faithful Warbys?

Does anyone know about Maui Jims durability? I feel like the polycarbonate lenses on my Warbys would be more durable than the glass lenses on the Mauis. I mention this because whenever my sunglasses aren't on my face, they're usually in my soft case that came with my Oakley Frogskin. I also tend to put my sunglasses in my pocket or my backpack. Since my Warby Parkers are still in one piece with the lens scratch-free, I hope Maui Jims can withstand the same abuse.

Here are the Warby Parkers I've had for a year: http://www.warbyparker.com/sunglasses/men/thatcher#whiskey-tortoise

Here are the Mauis I'm looking at: http://www.mauijim.com/maui-cat-iii-7151.html

Thanks everyone!

For me it’s hard to believe that MJ is batter than Ray-ban. I bought a pair of the new wayfarers on vacation and had them for 6 years until sat them down in a store a left. I wore them all the time they held up remarkably well. The lenses had a few minor scratches but nothing major which IMO was great since I wore them painting, cutting grass, framing, pouring concrete, in the ocean, in the pool basically anytime the sun was out.

So are the MJ’s really that much better? My real fear is that I’m going to spend the money on them and just won’t hold up like the RB did for me. I also tried Costa and I personally think they suck for the money. They had plastic lenses and they seemed to scratch very easily. They were quite disappointing honestly.

I’m also curious if maybe in the last few years if RB has changed something ? They seem to get hate on here and from my experience they’ll be hard to beat.

If any of you sunglass aficionados have experience with MJ and RB lemme know.

Thanks

Are Maui Jims better than Ray Bans?

In a head-to-head comparison, Maui Jim and Ray Ban both offer UV protection and polarized sunglasses, but Maui Jims are much more appropriate for outdoor sports, while Ray Bans can make a bold fashion statement but won't offer the same sunglasses protection.

What sunglasses are comparable to Maui Jim?

Maui Jim and Costa are similar when you compare their lenses. While Maui Jim argues that the lenses in its sunglasses come infused with “rare earth elements” (which can allegedly boost clarity and improve color perception), Costa claims to have 580 different lenses.

Why are Maui Jim glasses so good?

Maui Jim sunglasses allow you to see color in ways you have never seen before, thanks to their patented PolarizedPlus2 technology. Their unique formula of digital polarization enhances color in bright conditions, leaving you with a crisper and more vibrant visual world.

How long do Maui Jim sunglasses last?

Our Maui Jim replacement sunglass lenses are made from polyamide, which is flexible, lightweight, and super strong. What's more, it possesses the high definition clarity of glass, but minus the heaviness and tendency to break very easily. We expect our lenses to last 2-5 years, or even longer, if taken care of.
