I was making Mexican food the other day and was using my go-to brand of refried beans when I discovered that neither the product packaging nor the website had any gluten info.  So I emailed the company and here’s what they replied.  Needless to say, I was a happy girl.

Hi, I am in my second week of going gluten free. I also eat this brand of refried beans, and haven't had any kind of reaction. I have, however, had reactions to anything with citric acid. I'm with the other people, it may be a different ingredient causing the issue. I heard a lot of people can't tolerate dairy at first, so if you put cheese in the beans, like I do, that may have been it. Lucky for me, I seem to be able to tolerate cheese.

Celiac.com 05/11/2021 - We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain products are gluten-free. One question we see a lot is about Mexican food products, especially refried beans.

We recently established that most brands of refried beans are likely to be gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease. That led to the next question: Which major brands of refried beans are labeled gluten-free?

Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
Some research showed that several top brands of refried beans are labeled gluten-free, and are safe for people with celiac disease. Other brands are free of gluten ingredients and do not contain gluten as a known allergen, and so are likely to be gluten-free, as well. As always, read labels, and allergen warnings, and avoid any ingredients that may include gluten.

What refried beans are gluten

Refried beans are naturally gluten-free, and two major brands (Old El Paso and Rosarita) are both considered to be gluten-free. It is still a good idea to check the label (no matter what brand you are buying) as refried beans could have flavorings that include gluten or manufacturers production methods could change.
