Texas Longhorns softball pitcher Miranda Elish is "doing well" after being hit in the face by a teammate's throw during Friday's super regional game against Alabama.

The team provided an update via Twitter on Friday night, noting the junior was taken to the emergency room as a "precaution":

Texas Softball @TexasSoftball

For those who have joined us late, we've been told that "our @elish_miranda is DOING WELL and was taken to the ER as a precaution..." We sincerely appreciate all your thoughts and prayers!

Elish was helped off the field in the second inning after catcher Mary Iakopo's throw to second on an Alabama bunt attempt struck her in the head.

"I was looking to get a lead out," Iakopo said after the game. "That's all I was looking for so I was headed to second, and it was a dead ball. I shouldn't have thrown it."

Elish exited the game having allowed four runs (three earned) on two hits and three walks in 1.2 innings of work.

The Longhorns trailed 3-0 at the time but managed to rally for a 7-5 victory.

"We definitely said that she was our motivation," Longhorns outfielder MK Tedder said after the game, according to the American-Statesman Staff's Danny Davis. "We definitely took what happened to make sure that we were doing it for her."

Iakopo told Davis that she "was thinking about Miranda the whole time" afterward. Iakopo hit a home run and knocked in four while helping her team rally from a four-run deficit.

Texas' victory sets up a winner-take-all Game 3 on Saturday.

CNN  —

A pitcher for the University of Texas softball team was taken to a hospital Friday after a ball thrown by her own teammate struck her in the face, the team said on Twitter.

Miranda Elish was “doing well and was taken to the ER as a precaution,” the tweet said. Details of the injury were not available.

The unusual incident happened in the second inning of a big game, with Texas playing the University of Alabama during a NCAA Division I Super Regional game in Tuscaloosa.

An Alabama player bunted, and Texas catcher Mary Iakopo picked up the ball and threw toward second base, hoping to put out the runner from first, video showed.

But the catcher’s throw hit Elish squarely in the face, and she collapsed to the ground, video showed.

Play was stopped, and coaches and teammates gathered around Elish in the middle of the field. The fans gave a standing ovation as she was helped off the field.

“She’s hurting a little bit, but she’s in good spirits,” Texas coach Mike White said later on ESPN, which broadcast the game.

Pitchers sometimes crouch when a catcher throws to second base to reduce the chances of being struck by a ball. In the split-second action of the Texas-Alabama game, Elish was in position to see the umpire call a dead ball (because the batter had put her foot outside the batter’s box) as the catcher barehanded the ball and was in motion to throw to second, video from the game showed.

Texas was trailing 3-0 when the injury occurred but rallied to win 7-5 with the help of a home run by Iakopo.

Texas avoided elimination from postseason play and will face Alabama again Saturday. White said Elish, the team’s best pitcher, won’t play, ESPN reported.

One softball player tweeting support for Elish was Ashlee Swindle, an Auburn pitcher injured May 17 when a line drive hit off the bat of a Colorado State player struck Swindle in the face during a tournament game in Tucson, Arizona.

Swindle was taken to a hospital, diagnosed with a concussion and released to the team doctors, the Auburn softball program tweeted.

A scary moment happened in the top of the second inning in the second game of the Tuscaloosa super regional of the NCAA softball tournament Friday between Texas and Alabama, when the Longhorns’ star pitcher Miranda Elish was hit in the face by her own catcher on an errant throw to second base.

With one out and a runner on first, Alabama’s Elissa Brown laid down a bunt. Texas catcher Mary Iakopo fielded it and threw towards second base to try to cut down the lead runner, but the throw instead caught Elish — who had been walking forward — right in the face.

You can see video of the play here, though it is hard to watch.

Elish’s teammates immediately rushed to her side as the stadium fell silent. According to AL.com, she walked to the Alabama clubhouse under her own power before leaving on a stretcher to the hospital.

How did Miranda Elish get hurt?

On Saturday night, when a tornado warning was issued for Stillwater, the teams took cover in the underground weight room at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Walking down the stairs, Elish slipped and bruised her tailbone, resulting in a trip to the emergency room and X-rays to make sure she hadn't broken anything.

Why did Miranda Elish transfer to Oklahoma State?

In August of 2021, she entered her name into the transfer portal. She had doubts that schools would want her because she hadn't played for a year and a half. It wasn't long until Oklahoma State offered her a spot on the team. Elish said that she will never forget talking to head coach Kenny Gajewski for the first time.
