Who do you suppose was laughing inside the Radley house?
Boo
Radley
Boo was responsible for the gifts and mending of Jem's pants because he wants to be friends.
How do you think he/she views the children and their games?
Boo probably thinks its funny because the kids have only heard stories of him and that no one knows what really happened to him. He was responsible for the gifts and mending Jem's pants because he wants to be friends with the children.
What's the significance/symbolism of Miss Maudie making three little cakes for the children?
The two small cakes are for Scout and Dill because they are still young and small. The big cake is for Jem because he is growing and maturing. It's kind of like finally getting to eat at the adult table instead of the kids table during holiday feasts. Jem is becoming a man. Mrs. Maudie thinks Jem is old enough to understand what is going on in the town of Maycomb and that Robinson was convicted of a crime.
When Miss Maudie says, "but sometimes the Bible in the hands of one man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hands of--oh, your father? What person is she criticizing, and what is the point of her criticism?
She is being critical of Boo Radley's father. Her point is that Mr. Radley's sense of right and wrong was so rigid that it led him to punish Boo in a cruel and excessive manner. As a result, Boo has become a recluse.
How do Miss Maudie and Atticus view Arthur Radley compared to the children and the rest of the town?
1)Miss Maudie tells the kids that Boo was actually a very polite and shy young man. He probably doesn't want to get out of the house and the Radley's are "foot-washing Baptists". She blames Mr Radley for Arthur's seclusion. 2)Attitus tells the kids not to play the Boo Radley game because it is disrespectful and it looks like they are making fun of him.
Why is it important to Jem that he go get his pants before morning?
He doesn't want to get punished by his father. He doesn't want to disappoint his father and have him find out that they were at the Radley's house.
Why do you think Jem finding his pants the way he did made him cry?
Jem's pants were folded and mended because he ripped them crawling under the fence. They were laying across the fence folded up. It made him cry because he probably was starting to understand that Boo was a nice person.
What do the details of the soap figurines tell you about the person who carves them?
They are being closely watched and that the person who carved them was skillful and knew about the children.
How does the cement in the knot-hole start causing Jem to lose his youthful innocence?
He realizes that it was Boo that was leaving the gifts in the tree. He values the gifts even more than his own possessions. He doesn't want to stalk Boo anymore and he feels bad about what they did.
Who do you think plugged the tree with cement and why?
Nathan Radley because he said the tree was dead. He didn't want Boo to have any relationship with the kids. Jem is upset that the contact with Boo has been stopped, blocked.
