Virat Kohli became the fastest batsman to reach 11,000 runs in one-day internationals after scoring a fine half century against Pakistan on Sunday.

The Indian captain broke the record of compatriot and batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who had reached the milestone in 276 innings. Tendulkar is followed by former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting who reached the milestone in 286 innings, and Sourav Ganguly in 288 innings.

Kohli, who took only 222 innings to achieve the record, has become the third Indian and ninth overall to reach the 11,000 mark in ODIs.

Incidentally, the difference between Kohli and Tendulkar is over 50 innings which is staggering. Surely, he is now on course to become the greatest ODI batsmen ever.

Kohli is currently ninth in the list of all-time leading run-scorers in ODI cricket. Howecer, all the players above him in the list have retired.

Tendulkar is at the top of the list with 18,426 ODI runs, followed by Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara (14,234), Ponting (13,704), Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya (13,430), Mahela Jayawardene (12,650), Inzamam-ul-Haq (11,739), Jacques Kallis (11,579) and Ganguly (11,363).

India captain Virat Kohli has become the fastest batsman ever to score 11,000 one-day international runs.

Kohli couldn’t have asked for a bigger stage on which to reach the milestone, bringing it up during his team’s blockbuster World Cup group stage match against Pakistan at Old Trafford.

Coming to the crease with his team already in an enviable position at 1-136 after a strong start from openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul – having been sent in to bat by Pakistan captain Safaraz Ahmed – Kohli required 57 runs to break Sachin Tendulkar's record.

India prove too strong for Pakistan

The Indian captain didn’t disappoint, bringing up a chanceless half-century in 51 deliveries before scoring that 57th run in the 45th over of India’s innings.

He reached the 11,000-run mark in just 222 innings, smashing Tendulkar’s previous record of 276 innings.

It comes less than a year after Kohli brought up 10,000 runs, a milestone he reached against the West Indies last October.

Kohli is the ninth batsman overall to reach 11,000 runs in the history of one-day cricket, already has 41 ODI centuries tohis name and at just 30 years of age, is on track to surpass Tendulkar's all-time ODI run-scoring record of 18,426.

Kohli was unbeaten on 71 in the 47th over of India’s innings when rain in Manchester stopped play. He returned when the skies cleared but only added another six runs before walking when he appeared to have edged behind a Mohammad Amir delivery, although replays suggested he had missed the ball.
