Where to buy fresh Red chili peppers near me

I'm relatively new to cooking. Lately I've been going through Jaime Oliver's iphone app and truly enjoying his creations, but I find a lot of them call for either "fresh red chile" or "dried red chile". I can't find either of these things in any local grocery stores. I was hoping to make his Szechuan Chicken Stir Fry tonight but I'm afraid the chile may be a central ingredient (and I also haven't been able to find szechuan peppercorns).

Any idea why I can't find these items and what I can use in their stead?

I am in desperate need of FRESH red chillies. Where can I find 'em?

in Food

  1. The fresh ones are mostly the green varieties. I could find dried red chillies but I don't think I've seen the fresh ones.

  2. um what kind of fresh red chilies?

  3. What neighborhood? Any Mexican grocer should carry them.

  4. Oh yeah, and what time should I be over for dinner?

  5. or you could try a Vietnamese grocery store on Argyle

  6. i've been to stanley's in search of something similar and walked out disappointed and empty handed...  believe it or not, and unfortunately, i found a much wider selection of peppers at jewel?  i found this odd.

  7. Kwoky -- Yes, in what area? And what kind of chili -- there are so many kinds!

Red chilis come from the same plants as green ones; they're just ripe. I agree with folks here that have mentioned the stores on Argyle, and any Hispanic grocery store. I've found red ones at Chicago Food, Cermak Produce, Andy's Fruit Ranch and Harvestime as well.

  8. rachel -- That's the name of the place I was trying to remember the other day! I was telling John B. that when I had clients on the southwest side and southwest 'burbs, one of them told me about Pete's -- great place! But I don't think there are any on the north side...or are there?

  9. nope... there's a few around midway... i've only ever been to the one near hegewisch/east side far southeast

  10. There are a number of them south/southwest, but not up here, then. Until Kwoky tells us what area he's looking for, he's going to get suggestions from ALL over.

  11. You know it's near south side, not far from Pilsen or University Village. But if you can get there you could get more than a weeks worth of fresh produce including red peppers for a very inexpensive price. If you can manage, it may be worth the trip. I love this place and it so much cheaper than Stanley's. Good luck.
The closest one is at 2526 W Cermak.

  12. Are you guys serious? I can't believe there are so many places that carry them. Obviously I am not looking in the right place. Well, Alice S., I live in Uptown but if there's none that are close by, I would find a way to get there. I am looking for the medium length variety used in Southeast Asian and Thai food. I wish I could upload a picture. If I could get the right ones, you can come for dinner anytime, Ingrid G.; that is if you can take the heat. =)

  13. Isn't there a Pete's or Cermak produce right next to Arun's on Kedzie just South of Irving Park? I would imagine that they would carry them since Arun's is right next door.

  14. Ingrid -- That would be Cermak Produce, just north of Arun's, both just north of Irving Park. There really is no Pete's on the north side, sorry to say.

  15. Kwoky -- I've never looked for the red chilis at Broadway Supermarket (4879 N Broadway)... have you looked there yet?

  16. If you have a car...Super HMart!

  17. Don't go to the Dominick's on Chicago & Damen. I asked the woman in the produce department if they had zucchini and she said, "Girl I don't even know what that IS," and left.

  18. Ingrid -- Heehee....I used to shop at Edmar when I lived in the Ukrainian Village (before it was trendy, and it was just CHEAP). I saw things there I'd never seen in my life, but it was all so interesting! Add to that the live poultry shop down the street, and the fresh pierogi shop as well, and it was great eating all the way around.

  19. Me too--hey Alice, do you remember the Too Far West cafe? It was on Chicago just west of Damen on the South side of the street.

  20. Ingrid -- I lived on Walton, just west of Damen, so it would have been pretty close to me! Was it there 25 years ago? Because if not, then I wouldn't know about it. Then again, I might just not remember it!

  21. I used to love going to Edmar. Bimbo is way better than Little Debbie!

  22. Try Pete's Fresh Market.  I believe it's off of Western and 22nd.

Other suggestion would be A & G Market off of Belmont and Central (I believe).

  23. Fresh Farms at 2626 W Devon Ave.  The Chillies they carried, labeled as Thai, while primarily of the green variety also had red and yellow mixed in.  Even grabbed ourselves a small handful as they looked inviting and were only 1.99$/lb.  So that handful came to a whopping 0.14$ according to my receipt.
