This book cover for “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding shows a mirrored image of two boys. However, the boys on either side are in different settings and look different.
On one side, there is a boy holding a conch. The conch in this book symbolizes order and civilization. It held great power until the boys on the island became savage.
On the other side, there is a boy with his face painted red which could symbolize blood and there are spears in the background. This side shows the savageness and separation from civilization.
Because it looks as if the boys are looking into the mirror, it shows that people are corrupt and savage. In this book, the boys used to be civilized. The longer they are on the island, the more savage they became. Some, like Jack, became savage faster than others while others such as Ralph tried to hold on to civilization. Jack fully forgot the meaning of rescue and survival. Ralph however always tried to keep the signal fire (symbolized connection to civilization) going with the help of Piggy. For example, on page 142, Piggy reminds Ralph of the word “rescue”. Without Piggy, Ralph could have ended up like Jack. Another person who helped Ralph was Simon. He was the one who figured everything out. He was the one who said that the beast was themselves and not a physical beast. However, before Simon could tell everyone that the “beast” they saw was the man who came down with the parachute, Simon is killed by Jack and his group with spears. Because the boys were savage, they took Simon’s life thinking he was the beast. This event in the book shows when the boys lost all the innocence they had.
On page 143-144, when Simon is talking to the Lord of the Flies, the Lord of the Flies says something which proves that Simon’s theory was right. The Lord of the Flies says “We are going to have fun on this island.” and “You know perfectly well you’ll only meet me down there – so don’t try to escape.” which foreshadows the boys killing Simon and those lines prove that the boys were the beast.
