Day 4: Do a day trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in America. It’s about 75 minutes from Asheville by car, but the most scenic way to get there is via the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Parkway route will take a little over 2 hours, but the scenery and drive are beautiful, and the Parkway is the most-visited National Park unit (as opposed to an actual National Park) in America. You can picnic in the Great Smokies and visit wonderful sites such as Cataloochee on the NC side or Cades Cove on the Tennessee side.

Great Smoky Mountain National Park is located along the border between the states of North Carolina and Tennessee and is the most popular national park in the US. Encompassing over 800 square miles of forest, mountains, rocky ridges, rivers, and more, Great Smoky Mountain National Park is well known for the diversity of nature found within its borders. Guests can hike, drive, and explore the park to reach the summits of mountains, view gorgeous waterfalls, or learn about history from the old structures on the property.

Take a Day Trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park Located less than 2 hours from Asheville is Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which encompasses the Blue Ridge Mountains and parts of the Appalachian Trail. If you love the outdoors and are spending a weekend in Asheville, tacking on a trip to the Smokies is a great idea. Especially beautiful in the early mornings, when the fog weaves through the mountains, it also makes for a perfect day trip from Asheville.

When you visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, why not start off by hiking up to Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the Smokies at 6,643 feet. From the car park, it’s a relatively steep half-mile walk to the observation tower on the summit, but our kids handled it no problem and on a clear day you get spectacular 360° views of the Smokies and beyond – a great spot for sunrise and sunset.

Gatlinburg is often referred to as the “Gateway to the Smokies” because it is the last town you drive through before entering the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Be sure to spend some time in the park during your trip because the views are absolutely stunning. There are several different hiking trails to choose from in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

You’re going for a scenic drive through one of the most popular places in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Cades Cove. Leisurely drive along the Cove’s 11-mile loop, but remember to keep your eyes open for black bears and other wildlife!. There are several places to park so that you can take your family along some of short trails in the Cove.

The NPS classifies spring in the Smoky Mountains from March through May. This is arguably the most unpredictable time for weather in the park and changes can occur rapidly, especially at higher elevations. In March, the average high temperature at the lower elevations in the park is 61℉ and the average low is 42℉.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is filled with historic cabins from so long ago. There’s some pretty amazing stories to come from the park including the one about the Walker Sisters. We did go searching for the cabin which we never found. I later found out we were only .5 miles away!

This amazing park is home to a thousand black bears. In winter when I went the bears were hibernating, so ducks, deer and elk were the wildlife we saw. Winter here makes the park as beautiful as in other seasons but with completely different and unexpected views of nature and the landscape. Amazing!

LOVE the Smoky Mountains!! It’s a must see during all the seasons especially summer and fall! Plenty of pull offs for picture taking, enjoying the scenery and hiking. We live less than 2 hours away and frequent here several times a year and we still can’t get enough of the beauty! Also great towns all around with plenty to do and eat!

We really enjoyed our short trip here. Our first time, so we were just taking in the beauty of nature. The visitors center was great and many gifts for sale at reasonable prices. The staff was very pleasant, knowledgeable and professional. We can't wait to come back and explore much more with weather that is a tad warmer. It was 23 degrees the day we went, but barely noticed with all the surrounding beauty to behold!!

Zoo Knoxville

Zookeepers give educational presentations about animals & families can go on camel & carousel rides.

Slide 1 of 14

For a look at some of the most beautiful wildlife in Knoxville, head over to the Knoxville Zoo where you can find over 900 animals in one place. Species here come from all over the world and are grouped according to their habitats, and you can experience exotic animals like Komodo dragons and Khaleesi. There are also animals encounter sessions where you can get up close to the wildlife, and there are also other attractions like splash pad, a theater, and a carousel.

Not only are they educational experiences, but being on your feet all day is the perfect way to get some exercise and build up an appetite for those dinner reservations you made in advance. The zoo in Knoxville is beautifully curated and offers plenty of hands-on experiences amid the regular exhibits spread throughout the park. At 53 acres and housing over 800 animals, Zoo Knoxville will have plenty of things to see, do, and even eat for you and your children.

Zoo Knoxville is home to more than 900 different animals from across the globe, with so many things to see that make it an ideal spot to take your kids to this weekend. The zoo has received awards for its work in the conservation of red pandas and is also home to a number of unique and exotic animals, including Komodo dragons. Each animal at the zoo is grouped according to its habitat and they live happy lives.

A home for over 900 different animals from all corners of the globe, Zoo Knoxville makes for a great family day out. Over 100 red pandas have been born in the zoo, more than any other facility in the world. This zoo has since received awards for its conservation work in relation to the pandas and other exotic species, including the resident Komodo dragons.

A popular family-friendly attraction in Knoxville is Zoo Knoxville, which is home to nearly 1,000 animals and 30 different species. Zoo Knoxville isn’t just home to wildlife from all over the world; this zoo has other attractions too, like the largest splash pad in Knoxville. View endangered animals, feed a giraffe, or enjoy a show at the Forest Theater.

I should start with a disclaimer that I did not actually visit the Knoxville Zoo on my trip to Knoxville because zoos really aren’t my thing. I do realize, however, that zoos are a big draw for many families, so it would be unfair if I left it out. That being said, the most popular residents at the Knoxville Zoo are the endangered red pandas.

Accredited by the National Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Zoo Knoxville opened in 1971. It was the first zoo in the world to hatch endangered northern spider tortoises and has birthed more red pandas than any other zoo. Along with lions, elephants and giant tortoises, you can also see giraffes, tigers, red wolves and black bears.

If you’re looking for a great spot to take the family, the Knoxville Zoo is located just east of downtown Knoxville. The zoo houses over 800 animals from all over the world that are kept in unique habitats to accommodate each species. Zoo Knoxville is one hundred percent committed to conserving both local and exotic life.

Animal lovers rejoice because Knoxville has one of the best zoos in the South. Over 800 animals call it home, including everything from African elephants to King cobras. They’re especially well-known for their Red Pandas – more have been born here than any other zoo in the western hemisphere.

The Zoo Knoxville has many animals on exhibit that you will fall in love with and so many fun activities for the whole family. One of the favorite animals at the zoo is the red panda. Did you know that Knoxville, TN is the Red Panda Capitol of the World?

Going to this zoo is one of the most interesting and romantic things to do in Knoxville. There are close to 1,000 animals at the zoo and it is wonderful to go for a walk at the zoo while you see these animals.

I have been coming here since 2000 with my family. We are proud members! One of our favorite zoos. Not as big as the Nashville zoo, but they just seem to have better Layout /Exhibits / Lot of places to stop and rest with benches, Picnic tables. Not to meet you boo with the zoo but Halloween is our favorite thing every year. I don’t like the fact to expose you have to go through the gift shop to exit the zoo. Now that usually causes a little problem with the kids. That really the only thing I hate about this zoo. Should be an option to exit without going through the gift shop.

We love Zoo Knoxville! My daughter adores all her animal friends who live at the zoo. She is a big fan of monkeys, red pandas, ghiraffes, otters, and tigers. The zoo is well arranged for ease of visiting. This zoo's trails run in loops and the animals have reasonably large well appropriated paddocks. There is plenty of shade for the animals and humans that are at the zoo. The zoo has sunscreen and hand sanitizer dispensers throughout their facilities for sanitizing and preventing children from getting sun burnt. There is also a splash pad for children and parents to cool down during the hot of the Summer. This zoo is definitely a world class Zoological Park.

We love this zoo so much!!! Great reptile exhibit indoors for inclement weather. Love the new otter habitat too! Plenty of good food options and places for kids to play between visiting the animals. Kids got to feed a sloth one time too!

Briarwood was amazing !!! The owners were so friendly and my gosh never have laughed so hard in my life. The kids an us adults had an emailing time. Well worth it !!!

My husband & I always look for drive thru animal parks when we travel. This was by far 1 of our favorites! All of the animals were friendly & came right to our car. Everyone would eat food from your hands- Llama, zebra, Buffalo, deer, elk, emu, ostrich, etc. The park was a nice long drive but husband & I had so much fun we had to drive through a 2nd time! Wish we lived closer to the area - we would be here all the time!! Added bonus the manager had the cutest monkey that socialed & played with us too. Overall amazing experience

Briarwood Ranch Safari Park is a MUST DO if you're in Eastern Tennessee!! The owners are super-nice and down to earth, and the animals are so fun!! Hold on tight to that bucket - there are some bucket thieves in the animal kingdom!! We had a great time with 3 buckets of feed - worth every penny!!

Theaters

Early-19th-century hall restored to its former colorful grandeur to host musical & theater acts.

Slide 1 of 19

The Tennessee Theatre is a 1920s-era movie palace, located within the Burwell Building in downtown Knoxville. The theatre first opened in 1928, and with nearly 2,000 seats in the auditorium, was billed as "Knoxville's Grand Entertainment Palace". Its interior was designed by Chicago architects Graven & Mayger in the Spanish-Moorish style, although the design incorporates elements from all parts of the world: Czechoslovakian crystals in the French-style chandeliers, Italian terrazzo flooring in the Grand Lobby, and Oriental influences in the carpet and drapery patterns.

Photo Credit Tennessee Theatre. When it first opened in 1928, the Tennessee Theatre was lauded as “the South’s most beautiful theatre.” Walking on the Italian terrazzo flooring, looking up at the Czechoslovakian crystal-chandeliers and the beautiful Asian influences in the carpet and drapery patterns, you’ll be mesmerized by the Official State Theatre of Tennessee. The theatre hosts today’s musicians, vintage films, Broadway performances, concerts by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Knoxville Opera and much more.

The Tennessee Theater dates from 1928 when it was charmingly referred to as a ‘movie palace’. Nowadays the theater is still an icon thanks to its Spanish-Moorish style of architecture, and you will find period antiques here like the original crystal chandeliers as well as marble floors and Asian textiles. If you are looking for some culture in Knoxville, then this is one of the best places to find it, as you can expect classic films, musical concerts, and Broadway shows.

Built in 1928 as a luxurious movie theater, the Tennessee Theater is one of Knoxville’s most impressive performing arts venues. This gorgeous theater hosts more than 150 events per year including a number of Broadway shows, films, concerts, operas, and more. The Moorish interior features Czech crystals, French chandeliers, Italian flooring, and Asian textiles to create an atmosphere that lets you travel the world without needing your passport!

When planning things to do in Knoxville with kids, check out the calendar or events at the Tennessee Theater. Of course, the entertainment is always changing, there is a good chance you will find a show your family will enjoy. You may even be able to catch a performance of your child’s favorite character like Daniel Tiger live on stage, or you may see a live music event on the calendar you don’t want to miss.

The historic Tennessee Theatre was immediately beloved by residents upon opening in 1928. A marvelous piece of Spanish-Moorish architecture features a beautiful facade and an intricate interior of ornate Czech chandeliers, a classic terrazzo floor and detailed drapes. The theatre was later added to the National Register of Historic Places while earning the title as the Official State Theatre of Tennessee.

Built in the 1920s, the Tennessee Theatre was once an old cinema, but today, it’s something that really shines – a restored theater with actors, lights and bows at the end. As it’s very popular and offers a varied run of plays, make sure you book your tickets online; otherwise, you might be disappointed at the door. One of the prettiest buildings in Knoxville, it’s worth visiting for its interiors alone.

A 1920’s movie theater converted to music and event venue, the Tennessee Theatre is one of the best options to catch big names coming through Knoxville. The venue has a capacity of just over 1,500 patrons and is primarily focused on Broadway style shows these days. However, big name bands such as Modest Mouse will occasionally make a stop at this historic venue.

With a history going back to 1928, the Tennessee Theater, located in downtown Knoxville, is ripe with history and entertainment. Their website mentions that it is best enjoyed by families with children ages three and up. This is a perfect place to catch a live performance, experience some new culture, and teach your child about the rich history of Knoxville.

Check out one of Knoxville’s famed theaters, which host movies, symphonies, stage plays, operas, and more contemporary musical performances. The beautifully restored Tennessee Theatre is one of the best, as it’s home to the Knoxville Symphony and opera company and shows classic movies. It was built in 1928 and was considered Knoxville’s first skyscraper.

The Tennessee Theater was once called a movie palace upon its opening in 1928. Since then, its iconic nature has only grown, making it one of the places to visit for entertainment and architecture!. It’s also on the National Register of Historic Places.

A decent percentage of shots are taken from the northwest corner of Gay Street and Clinch Avenue – very common for locals and visitors alike. Perfect for proposals, wedding pics, besties, and more. This one is from a bit further north on Gay Street.

Gay St. If you went back in the day, but haven’t been recently, you owe it to yourself to go. They did extensive renovations about 10 years ago and the interior is now exquisite. The architecture of the outer building is classic, from the ‘20s.

The Tennessee Theatre is a 1920s-era movie palace, located within the Burwell Building in downtown Knoxville. The Burwell Building was built in 1907. At a height of 166 feet (51 m), it was Knoxville's tallest structure until 1912.

One of the best date ideas in Knoxville is going to the Tennessee Theatre. This is a beautiful and iconic theater that used to be a movie palace. The inside of the theater has an amazing design and lots of decorations everywhere.

ABBA: THE CONCERT (A Tribute to ABBA)FRIDAY, JUNE 10 | 8:00PM. Tennessee Theatre, 604 S. Gay Street, Knoxville, TN 37902.

Great venue. Perfect in between size, not a club show but also not the arena sized show. You can still get close to the artists. Several tables but mostly standing. Good flow at the bars on either side. Clean room, clean bathrooms

So beautiful! I'd pay just to sit here. Saw Righteous Brothers. Even with having to show covid card/ test the lines moved fairly quickly. It was easy to get from parking lot to theater. Book signing after show went smoothly. I would love to visit this theater again!

First timers and we couldn't be more impressed. Such a beautiful theater and the show was outstanding!! Everyone was helpful and welcoming. Looking forward to becoming a supporting member. See you again soon!

World's Fair Park

Nature & Parks

Event venue

Site of 1982 World's Fair, with an amphitheater, events & a sunsphere tower with observation deck.

Slide 1 of 4

Before dinner, we made our way to World’s Fair Park to check into the Tennessean Hotel, which just opened in April next door to the Holiday Inn. The rooms are airy and gorgeous with some stunning works of art, and we had a view of the park below us. We were also just a five-minute walk from Market Square, so we left our car valeted at the hotel for much of the week and explored Knoxville by foot.

We arrived when the grounds were closed. Which was the best, because no one was around, except workers. The Globe thing and mural under the bridge is what I came for and I wasn't disappointed.

My brother just moved to Knoxville and I helped him drive out from Arizona. With four small children in tow, we explored this fun park on New Year's Day. There are plenty of fun things to enjoy - including the Sunsphere platform, a reflecting pool, bird mural, various county flags on display, an Ampitheater (where my nieces and nephews, my brother, my dad and I did a little performing - singing and dancing to a song we enjoyed listening to on our drive cross country - the five or so people also enjoying the Ampitheater were kind enough to clap at the end ;) For the kids, the best part was the playground. We enjoyed playing until it started raining again and we headed back to the car.

I was excited to visit this historic place, but it turns out everything closed at five. There wasn’t any signage outside to gain historic insight. It would be a sweet concert space. A sweet memorial was worth the visit.

Observation Decks & Towers

Iconic tower from the 1982 World's Fair featuring a free observation deck with 360-degree views.

Slide 1 of 15

In 1982, the city of Knoxville hosted the World’s Fair, sloganed Energy Turns The World. The organizers worked together with architects local to the area to create an impressive structure that would thematically bring the sun – the greatest source of energy – down to earth and into what we now call World’s Fair Park. The result of this project was The Sunsphere, a huge round object fitted with reflexive glass pane panels, layered with dusted gold, balanced on a tower of hexagonal shape.

Wikipedia may refer to it as a “hexagonal steel truss structure, topped with a 75 ft. glass sphere” but it might be more apt to call the Sunsphere located in the heart of Knoxville as a giant, gold disco ball in the sky. Originally constructing as a capstone for the 1982 World’s Fair, the Sunsphere still stands as a spectacular beacon of engineering. On most days you can take an elevator to the top observation deck from 9 am to 6 pm.

Made in Tennessee Photo Ops: Volunteer Landing + The Sunsphere These days, few people pass up a good photo op. In a city filled with such opportunities, two stand out in particular: the scenic Tennessee River at Volunteer Landing and the undeniably picturesque landmark, the Sunsphere. Down at Volunteer Landing, the backdrop of the river and the river bridges creates a perfect image, especially as the sun begins to set.

There are a million angles to capture of our beloved Sunsphere, so we’re gonna give y’all only one on this list and create a separate top 10 of JUST the Sunsphere (insert gif: Jonah Hill excited)!. This angle may go unnoticed, but is a common one to pass if you’re coming from downtown and going to a UT football game. It might not be the best for selfies as the angle to achieve this is pointing up *double chin alert*.

Address: World's Fair Park, 801 Clinch Avenue, Knoxville, Tennessee TN, 37902, USA Tel: +1 865 523 4228 One of Knoxville's most stunning and instantly recognizable landmarks, the Sunsphere tower stands in World's Fair Park and was built in 1982. Measuring 266 feet / 82 meters, the Sunsphere features a museum and observation decks, with spectacular panoramic views of the city. Open hours: daily Admission: free

Standing 26 stories tall, the Sunsphere is an iconic addition to the Knoxville skyline. This interesting sphere is made up of glass lined with 24k gold. From the observation deck, you can get sweeping views of Knoxville, the Tennessee River, and World’s Fair grounds. It’s inclusion in the World’s Fair put it amongst many of the world’s iconic structures including the Eiffel Tower and the Seattle Space Needle.

When the World’s Fair was hosted by Knoxville in 1982, an extravagant geodesic sphere was constructed. Known as the Sunsphere, the golden ball is set on a tower and stands at 266 feet above the ground. Only one other development from the fair remains, but the Sunsphere continues to be a popular attraction some four decades later.

Constructed for the 1982 World’s Fair, the Knoxville Sunsphere is a 266ft-high (81m) steel structure with a 75ft (23m) gold glass sphere. The fourth level has an observation deck that gives visitors a 360-degree view of downtown Knoxville, the Tennessee River and the Great Smoky Mountains.

One of the most iconic landmarks in the city is the Sunsphere tower. This is an observation tower that belongs to the 1982 World's Fair. You and your partner can go to the top of the tower and enjoy an amazing panoramic view together.

The Sunsphere is an excellent spot to get a bird’s-eye view of Knoxville. It was built for the 1982 World’s Fair. Since then, the structure has gone through many changes, which can be read about in more detail here and here.

This Knoxville landmark was built for the 1982 World’s Fair. It became a local favorite and stands to this day. After the World’s Fair ended, the Sunsphere closed its doors and remained vacant until 2007.

What better way to experience the city of Knoxville than by viewing it from above. The Sunsphere in Knoxville does just that. Take the elevator to the top for a full viewing of the city and so much more.

A great stop in Knoxville, currently priced at $5 a person the observation deck offers wide ranging views of downtown and some of the rolling hills and mountains in the distance as well as a good chunk of the University of Tennessee campus. The best views are definitely in the summer when the surrounding trees and park below are most lively. Pictures can be hard to capture as the tint on the exterior glass gives the area a green glow inside. The observation deck itself isn’t massive but offers enough room. There’s a good detailed explanation of the structures history inside as well. Also inside is a limited selection of merchandise and a restroom. The deck is accessed by an elevator only which can be a little tight at times.

This just reopened after a long closure due to covid and some updates. The employees and director were friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. The view is good and they are planning to continue improving the experience. I am told it used to be free and locals are unhappy that it's now $5 a person to go to the top. I for one am OK with paying a nominal fee to support a historic structure for continued maintenance and improvements. Other places charge four times as much or more. Right now you need to book online and call a phone number to have the attendant bring you up. You can walk up some stairs to view from the 2nd story observation deck for free. The parking is a good distance from here and I didn't see any handicapped parking either. I think in time this will become more of a destination. I hope to see more photos, memorabilia and stats about the construction and the world's fair included. It was still worth the visit!

This was my first time back since the remodel. It now cost $5 to get in, however they have a free photo booth and you can take as many pics as you want. They also have a small gift shop, where I had to buy a small version of the Sunsphere You must buy tickets ahead of time and then the staff comes down to get you so you can go up.

Ijams Nature Center

Nature preserve

Nature & Parks

Wetlands & rock formations fill urban nature park with 10 miles of trails plus bike & canoe rental.

Slide 1 of 28

Now that you’ve got some fuel in the tank, let’s head out for a morning trail run (or walk) at Urban Wilderness. Spanning 1,000 wooded acres along the waterfront just three miles from downtown, this outdoor wonderland is a critical first stop for anyone visiting Knoxville and wanting to make the most of its natural amenities. The South Loop Trail system alone offers 42 miles of natural trails and a 12.5-mile main loop that threads together five separate parks, natural areas, neighborhoods and schools. For a fully customized experience, download theUrban Wilderness app to your iOS device or Android and plot out your run to get just the right distance and elevation gain.

Ijams Nature Center makes up 315-acres of protected land where you and your children can attend educational programs, hike, bike, paddles, climb or just take a stroll through the tranquil forest. It touts itself as friendly to “all ages and abilities”, which makes it easy for your whole family to find something to enjoy. What might be most breathtaking is the center’s “canopy experience”, which takes you up into the trees on a zip-lining adventure that may be slightly challenging to those with limited mobility but otherwise easy enough for even the smallest member of your family to have fun.

For anyone who is a nature lover, the Ijams Nature Center is not to be missed on a trip to Knoxville. The center is the brainchild of Harry Ijams who opened it originally as a sanctuary for birds, although the area has now grown to include 300 acres of land and is now a wildlife preserve as well as an educational center. Amazingly, the center is only 3 miles outside of Knoxville, and yet it can feel like another world as you explore creeks, groves, and hiking trails.

The day was sunny and hot so after lunch, we went to the shadiest area I know and drove out to Ijams Nature Center, which has gotten a complete makeover in the decade and change since I lived in Knoxville. Though it’s been around a century, Ijams was not quite the hopping spot in the early 2000s that it is now, thanks in part to the transformation of a pair of quarries and the addition of more family-friendly draws like the treetop adventures at Navitat.

The Ijams Nature Center was known as the Bird Sanctuary until the 1960s, developed by Knoxville bird expert Harry Ijams and the First Lady of Knoxville Garden Clubs, Alice Yoe Ijams. The center’s new name came about when the Knoxville Garden Club, Knox County Council of Garden Clubs and the City of Knoxville partnered up to protect the sanctuary. It has plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy, including hiking, biking and paddling.

Ijams Knoxville Nature Park is a well-known 315-acre nature center where visitors of all ages and abilities can walk, cycle, kayak, climb, and have a good time. Ijams’ mission is to promote environmental stewardship by providing an urban green area where people may learn about and appreciate the outdoors via fun activities. Quarry, a magnificent walk with natural playgrounds of rocks and trees, runs alongside a peaceful trail.

Described as “a place where living with the earth and caring for the earth become one and the same”, Ijams Nature Center was one of my favorite stops in Knoxville. It is part of Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness, a recreational, cultural, and historic preservation initiative, where visitors are encouraged to hike, bike, climb, discover, and simply relax. Ijams spans 300 acres and features over 12 miles of natural surface trails.

A photo posted by knoxify (@knoxify) on Oct 16, 2016 at 3:30pm PDT. For a truly mesmerizing experience while in Knoxville, spending a few hours at Ijams Nature Center is critical. What makes it great : Across its 300-acre sprawl, you’ll find the Will Skelton Greenway, the Urban Wilderness Corridor, Mead’s Quarry, and, of course, the nature center itself.

Another one of the more popular things to do in Knoxville is exploring natural areas. Ijams Nature Center is the perfect spot in Knoxville where you can connect with nature. It is a 315-acre nature center where visitors can enjoy environmental education programs, hiking, biking, paddling, climbing, or just a simple stroll through the outdoors.

Ijams is a 150-acre nature sanctuary on the banks of the Tennessee River with mulched and paved trails, a waterfront boardwalk and wildlife viewing areas. Seasonal events include music concerts, owl prowls, canoe trips, plant sales and guided nature walks. In 2014, USA Today named Ijams Nature Center one of Knoxville’s top three attractions.

Ijams Nature Center is one of the best things to do in Knoxville for nature-lovers, and it’s also completely free to explore. It was originally developed as a bird sanctuary by Harry Ijams. Since then, it has grown significantly, now encompassing 300 acres and dedicated to wildlife preservation and education.

The Ijams Nature Center is located in Knox county and offers free space activities for the families to enjoy. When planning outdoor activities and fun things to do in Knoxville with kids, Ijams Nature Center checks all of the boxes. You will discover over 10 miles of hiking trails and bike and canoe rentals.

Ijams Nature Center is a nature preserve with fun educational activities like learning about local wildlife, hiking, and kayaking. They offer many child-friendly programs, including camps, nature preschool, and field trips. Ijams is a great way for both kids and adults to get reconnected to nature.

After your caffeine fix, visit the Ijams Nature Center where you will be amongst exquisite views of Knoxville’s great outdoors. After a hike along the Tennessee River, you will eventually make your way past a quarry full of Tennessee Marble, which was used to build the United States Capitol.

Ijams Nature Center has launched a new Ijams E-Learning Station on its website with a variety of scavenger hunts for kids, tips on composting or creating pollinator gardens and more. You can also find interactive posts about fungi, frogs, flowers and more on Ijams' Facebook and Instagram.

For over a hundred years, residents of Knoxville have been exploring the sprawling wildlife sanctuary. The center was created by Harry Ijams, who had a vision for a bird refuge. Over time, it has developed and grown into a well-rounded reserve featuring an environmental learning center.

If you’re a local, you already know about Ijams…but we would be crazy not to include it on this list. Ijams has hiking and biking trails, as well as SUP and canoe rentals. If you’re a nature lover, the visitors center has plenty of information about the area.

We love getting outdoors, and in Knoxville there’s no better place than the Ijams Nature Center. With 10-miles of trails, rock formations, lakes and stunning overlooks it is a much-loved sanctuary by the locals and only a 10-minute drive from downtown.

If you’re looking to spend a day adventuring in the great outdoors, make sure to check out Ijams. Start out your day here spending some time hiking throughout the park. There are plenty of trails to keep you occupied and many beautiful picture spots.

If you need an escape from the city, explore Ijams Nature Center. This 300-acre park is a learning center and wildlife sanctuary. There is plenty to do at this nature center, from hiking and picnicking to even rock climbing and canoeing.

Believe it or not, there is a massive urban nature park in the city of Knoxville. Ijams Nature Center and Park is a little outside of the downtown area. When you get there, you’ll discover beautiful wetlands and unique rock formations.

Ijams is hands-down one of my most beloved spaces in Knoxville. That’s not just for photography, but for life in general!. If you don’t know about Ijams, it’s a 315-acre nature center that’s actually located in the City of Knoxville.

It’s the 10th anniversary of Ijams’ partnership with Central Cinema and Knoxville Horror Film Fest!. Grab your favorite blanket or lawn chair and join the film festivities!. Doors open at 7 pm and movies begin at dark (~9 pm).

Considered an urban natural playground, Ijams Nature Center is a 315-acre space that’s owned by a nonprofit environmental education center.

First time here today and had a great visit with the front desk, she directed me around the trails. An owl was on the arm of a volunteer out front, and I took the Tower Trail to the River trail. Such a beautiful spot, looking forward to returning, especially for events!

Ijams nature center has something for everyone. For this review I am discussing Meades Quarry. The park roped off a section for privacy during the wedding I was performing. The only sad thing was the trash floating in the water. Go visit and please respect the space.

A Knoxville gem! Ijams is a part of the Knoxville Urban Wilderness and a true gem within city limits. It resides on something like 300 acres off of a narrow, winding road in south Knoxville. There are a handful of trails and outdoor events for families and individuals and a variety of playgrounds for kids. The gift shop offers snacks, outdoor necessities, and local products. While you’re here, check out the indoor exhibit with the turtles, then hit the trail for some fresh air and the secret pond.

Smokies Stadium

With a brick-&-natural-stone exterior, this stadium offers modern amenities & old-school ambiance.

Slide 1 of 3

This was our first visit to the stadium. It was a beautiful day for a ballgame! There is ample parking, and staff to guide you to the specific space. They had spacious seating, and a variety of food and beverages from which to choose. The home team lost that afternoon, but we had a fun time. And we got a certificate (as first time visitors) to boot!

A decent enough minor league ballpark but has nothing which makes it unique or memorable. Prices are reasonable - parking is $5 and tickets are $10-12. Concessions are well varied and include a couple of Chicago favorites (Italian beef and Chicago dogs) in homage to the team being a Cubs affiliate. Crowds aren't huge, so the atmosphere is pretty relaxing. While there is nothing wrong with Smokies Stadium, it is not surprising that the team is looking to move back to the city of Knoxville.

This is a GREAT minor league baseball park. Every member of the staff that we interacted with was fantastic. The facilities were clean. The food was pretty good and the prices were reasonable. My only complaint was that our first row seats were too close to the concrete for my knees and I am not tall. First world problems but tall people should be aware if they want to sit there.

Slide 1 of 6

Located in Kodak, in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, Old Tennessee Distilling Co. handcrafts each bottle from scratch. Old Tennessee promises to deliver authentic spirits worthy of their legacy with each sip. Using cornmeal locally ground at the Old Mill in Pigeon Forge, sugar, yeast and water, their crystal clear, superior moonshine reflects a tradition spanning generations.

All I saw when we walked in to Old Tennessee Distilling Co were stacks and stacks of Moonshine in just about any flavor you could imagine. I’m not a huge moonshine fan, but I’ve been told theirs is very good. It didn’t take long to realize they produce so much more than Moonshine, and believe me when I tell you their products are delicious.

Now you can enjoy genuine Old Tennessee Distilling Corn Whiskey – made with malted barley and wheat – and Dumplin Creek Moonshine, all here at Old Tennessee Distilling. 3605 Outdoor Sportsman Place Kodak 865-401-2574

We just loved this place! Everyone was so friendly and knowledgeable. Terrence gave us a walk thru tour of the place and explained the process to us. We were even lucky enough to meet the owner! What a great guy. Got to sample a few selections of moonshine. The salted Carmel was our favorite!! Definitely worth visiting!

We had THE BEST staff serve us samples of moonshine here. Incredibly friendly, told us exactly what to do and boy they sure know their stuff! Bring some bottled water with you so you can cleanse your palate in between tastings. And I'd come with some food in your belly. I'm a lightweight and after 6 samples, I was definitely feeling it. The chocolate mint was my favorite as it was the smoothest for me. Great store and even better staff. Wish we could have bought some and brought it back on the plane!

My favorite distillery. Staff is very friendly an even more knowledgable about products. They can tell you the flavor pallet of each item so you can make a better choice about your purchases. Lots of cool items that other distillaries do not offer. Example they are the only place I have seen that pour lids with a stopper for the pour spout. Keeps bugs out and helps if you knock over the bottle. Plus they have the most hilarious bathroom door signs ever. Lets just say no doubt which one you should use. Love it. My kind of people!

I found this Market recently and I am very glad I did find it. There are many vendors that have very good pricing on items that I buy, a very broad selection. I would recommend you check this one out. My favorite vendor is Ozob Gifts; I can get any of my photos printed in a few minutes on many different items and even on canvas. I especially like the museum style canvas framing of my Art and Photography. Charles Milton cmilton111 Google Guide Knoxville, TN

Great place for bargain shopping and finding hard to find treasures. “Ones trash is another one’s treasure.” Lots of free parking and found a nice eatery in the right side of the indoor building. They also had booths on the outside selling yard sale items as well as newer and custom made items.

OZOB GIFTS review. RICK was very busy but took the extra time to explain to my wife and I the process and cost of each print offering his expertise on which size canvas was best. He simply loaded a Pic from my phone and 15 minutes later had a piece of my daughter's work on a 11x14" canvas.

Great history. I didn't know it was here until a few weeks ago. I stopped by and took a look around. Someone is renovating the property and will really nice to see when its complete. Completed in 1880, the mill is located near the head of Flat Creek in the Byrd’s Cross Roads community. Listed on the registry of the Association for Preservation of Tennessee Antiques, the mill is an example of the flour and corn mills constructed throughout Sevier County in the nineteenth century and is one of the few remaining in Tennessee. Jeff Mullins Photography Adventures. Happy Hiking!

It's a cool old mill, but it's closed and looks to be abandoned. Signs read keep out and everything is boarded up. But it's nice to see from the outside. No or little parking in the area. Someone needs to purchase this place and restore it to its former glory. Come take a quick pic, but do not expect anything more.

Forbidden Caverns

Amusement center

Nature & Parks

Guides & trails lead visitors on an educational tour of this underground river & cave formations.

Slide 1 of 4

The Forbidden Caverns, beneath English Mountain in the eastern part of the Great Smokies, are not so forbidden as the name implies. Numbered among the over 8,000 caves in the state of Tennessee, the Forbidden Caves are open for visitors who want to see the gorgeous underground caverns lit up with colorful and eerie lights. Over the centuries, these caves have been used as shelter from extreme weather, as the location of illegal moonshine stills during Prohibition, and now as a tourist attraction.

So fun! This was my first time taking a cavern tour or really exploring caves in any way so not much to compare it to but I had a great experience. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the different formations and history of the caverns with the moonshiners and Native Americans. The underground river is amazing and some of the formations are really breathtaking! They also have a generous military discount which is always appreciated. Would recommend this to anybody visiting on vacation!

I really enjoyed this cave. I didn't expect much as the information suggested it was a small cave and the tour was only 0.5 miles round trip and a little less than an hour long. There were a few places where there was a low overhang but nothing too strenuous to deal with. Floor was pretty level in most places so mobility shouldn't be much of a concern. There were also only a few steps going up as the entrance and exit have a ramp. Turned out it was much better than I expected. There were lots of different types of formations and most of them are still growing. According to the guide this cave has one of the largest Onyx drip stone formations in the United States. I didn't see much in the way of cave life but others said they saw a few frogs and other small creatures. Due to the availability of a river running through the cave and the remote location, the caverns were used to hide a moonshine still during prohibition. There are remnants of many whiskey barrel rings and parts of a still. Not sure if the still in the photos is an original however. The caverns were also used in the winter by Native Americans looking for shelter. Several artifacts were found inside, however they are no longer on site. The guide also said that there were flint formations inside the cavern as well that were used to create arrowheads. Overall a nice little excursion although it could have went a little longer so people could appreciate many of the formations a little longer. Definitely worth the price of admission if you are into exploring cave systems.

I came here for my birthday to have fun with my family and absolutely enjoyed it to the fullest! I haven't been here since I was a kid and needless I loved it still. We got to see newts which was awesome but no bats this time. Definitely will be back and I recommend all should go here for this amazing experience!

Plus so much more you will find, don’t want to say to much, but its completely worth the price. Also, bring wipes to clean you audio guide device. You hold it up to your ear to listen at different stages as you walk around.

The experience was great you get to see and some what feel how the people on the ship felt and did! There is some historical stuff and bits and pieces from the original Titanic! Everything was well kept and well organized! Parking was free and the atmosphere was as we were boarding the ship ! They made you feel as if you were there! Most of what we saw was as close as it can get to the original design! Well worth it, expect to spend at least 2 hours there! Photography is not allowed in most areas of the touring but they allow some photos to be taken in one area!

I would totally recommend. My family enjoyed the cleanliness of the museum. Everything was well organized. The staff when entering was welcoming. We happened upon this after seeing a billboard advertisement for Paula Deen's family restaurant. It was located in the island resort. The family style all you can eat dinner was delicious. And then it turned out there were so many shops, and entertainments for the kids. And in the middle of it all they have a water feature with dancing waters that are choreographed to two great songs every half hour all day and into the night. Lots of free parking, and a shuttle for those who don't want to walk the 3-4 blocks. We could ride our bikes from the lovely Foothills RV Park the level 3 miles on the nice bike/pedestrian trail.

This was a fun area to walk around and explore shops and restaurants. The mirror maze was supper fun and affordable with adult tickets only being $15 a person. The ferris wheel was also decently priced at $15 per adult and we were able to go around 4 times. Overall a fun place to explore and the free parking was also a great bonus! 🎡

Slide 1 of 15

One of the top attractions in all of the Smoky Mountains, the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster offers excitement that everyone can enjoy. The rollercoaster descends a record-setting 363 feet over the course of a mile and can reach 27 miles per hour, but you can customize the ride to your liking thanks to individual cars that have their own brakes. Whip and whirl down the mountain for a truly thrilling ride, or take your time on the curves and spend a moment enjoying the scenic views.

Featuring the longest downhill track in the country, the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster offers a one-of-a-kind coasting experience in a cart you control with your own handbrake. You’ll drop 363′ in altitude over the course of the track as you travel down the mountain at speeds up to 27 mph. The ride offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, and you’ll have several minutes to enjoy the scenery while grinning your way down the absurdly fun experience.

With a track that is over a mile long, the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster is the longest of its kind in the United States. Riders will hop into a sled, which carries up to two passengers and heads downhill on a scenic and fast-paced track through the Smoky Mountains and the surrounding area. The passengers control the speed of their own sleds, which can move up to 30 mph through twists, turns, and slopes for an unforgettable experience.

For a mountain view like no other, a stop at this roadside attraction is a must. The Smoky Mountain Alpine coaster is the longest in America, at over a mile, and the downhill track takes 7-8 adrenaline-pumping minutes to complete. Since you’re on a sled, you get to feel the air rushing in your hair and take in the natural setting as you fly along the track on your sled at 27 miles per hour.

Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster is the first coaster ever built in the Smoky Mountains. Opened in 2013, it is the longest mountain coaster in the country.

My Husband and I came the weekend of 2.19.2022 for our anniversary... I told him We HAVE to go at night... it DID NOT DISAPPOINT! We had a blast. The line was well worth it in our opinion. The ride lasted about 7 minutes.. I wanna say it was $18 per adult ticket.. Definitely gonna ride it again next time we go!

This was our favorite coaster out of all we tried. It was a good length ride and beautiful! If you're scared to ride them, don't be, you can slow it down and not whip around the corners, or you can go full steam ahead! Both are fun :)

Never heard of a Mountain Coaster before, but what a Blast! This place was pretty packed and we had to wait probably about 20– 25 minutes, but it was well worth it. You get sit on single coaster that brings you to the top of the mountain, then off you go. You control your speed with some hand brakes. It whinesdown the mountain with some pretty tight turns. The view is pretty amazing and it's a lot of fun. The straightaways if you push all the way forward you can really get some speed going oh, but when you hit the turns you may feel like you're going to fly off, LOL. You do need to make sure that the person in front of you is way ahead because they may not be going as fast as you would like. You will see these all over the place in Pigeon Ford but this one was pretty cool. When we drove by at night it was all lit up as well. Definitely worth the time spent.

Slide 1 of 4

Since 1993, Smoky Mountain Outdoors has maintained a high standard for fun, yet safe, white water rafting. In fact, it was awarded the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame designation for achieving the Certificate of Excellence from 2015 to 2019. It has several options for enjoying the Pigeon River rapids:

Amazing experience! Our guide was Miami and he was great the whole way. He clearly had done the route many times before and easily guided us through the level 3 and 4 rapids without anybody going overboard. The weather was perfect and the scenery was beautiful. The run was a total of about 2 hours and was a ton of fun. Highly recommend!

Amazing!! So worth the price. It was cold out and very windy but it was such a great experience. I suggest to not take lazy family members as It’s a good amount of physical work (6 miles worth of rafting). My family got stuck with a family who did not participate and we ended up doing all the work & the instructor was not too fond of them either. Overall, it was very fun and we are definitely doing it again next time we visit TN!

This was a great experience for our family during our Spring Break vacation! Prior to booking, the lady who answered the phone was very helpful answering all our questions. Getting prepared to board the buses and was very organized. Our guide, Nila, helped all of us to feel totally comfortable before starting, and she was very entertaining. The kids, and my husband and I had a great time. The water was freezing, but it was really awesome!

Wonderful experience. Our guide, Montana, was fantastic with great conversation, jokes, and facts about the area, wildlife, and sights along the way. She was great! The trip down the river itself was breathtaking with some simply amazing views and enough rapids to keep it fun with a couple of calm stretches that allowed us to hop off the raft and float in the river a while.

These guys are the best! Right from the start they were extremely professional, welcoming and ready to get started. Our guides Jacob and Montana were awesome. Even the safety briefing was fun! Definitely a “must do” experience while visiting Tennessee. Ask for Ewok as your guide and you won’t be disappointed in the slightest, I can promise you that much. Luckily my girlfriend and I were able to get our own private boat as the other group had 11 people in it. Definitely happy that they gave us our own boat with the one and only guide, Ewok! Incredible experience that I will definitely be back to.

This place is awesome. Sean was great and always in control. The Pigeon River was a fun/challenging rafting experience. The team prepped everyone, felt completely safe, but make no doubt this is a challenge. I had my 12 and 14 year old with me and they had a blast, they got full instructions and were comfortable. I'd highly recommend River Rat and Sean!

Our family took the white-water rafting tour while visiting during spring break. Our family had an amazing time, all the people were great! We filled 2 rafts and 1 of them had the young ones in our group ages 12 yrs to 8 yrs. Our young girls were pretty nervous but our guide Barbie was amazing with them, their fear melted away and they became excited and brave. Thank you Barbie for being so great with them, they still talk about you and the adventure! Also big shout out to Bryce, he was our guide for the adult raft. Bryce was so funny and knowledgeable! Thanks again to the crew of River Rat for a great adventure and memory! Pics were awesome!

This was an AWESOME white water rafting trip. There were many challenging rapids, which made it exciting and super fun! We had an excellent guide who was instructive and also entertaining. Make sure you have water shoes or shoes that are secure and can get wet. It can be challenging to get to the location, check out the roads before you trust your GPS!! Would HIGHLY recommend this trip!!

My family and I had a blast!! This was my kids first time to go white water rafting and they loved it! Our guide was wonderful and everyone there was so great and helpful! We would definitely recommend Raft Outdoor Adventures to all of our friends and family and plan to go back again someday!

We loved the white water rafting experience. Our guide was Halie. She did an awesome job and was very friendly. I love how she gave us lots of info and history about the Big Pigeon River and she was very knowledgeable about rafting. We arrived plenty early and the staff was good about telling us what we needed and what needed to stay in our car. There were several groups that arrived late and caused us to have a long wait to begin the adventure. When it was over, we were able to change in the nice bathhouse. However, I was disappointed with the availability to purchase photos of our adventure. I wanted one digital copy of one picture. They would not allow me to purchase one picture. The only option was to purchase all 12 digital pictures of our raft for $35. I would suggest taking your camera in a waterproof case around your neck and taking your own pictures. We will do it again!

Awesome rainy/cold day place to explore and it has a large playground space for the kids to run around safely! My daughter wandered off from us at one point and the staff was super quick and helpful in helping us find her. The boat ride is cool and worth the extra $12. The guys running it have some cool stories about the hundreds of fish in the tank.

Took the family for a school field trip. Had lots of fun. The information about the different creatures was well displayed making it easy to learn. The two different levels to the playground are conveniently located for rest points where the kids could burn off some energy before continuing on. Other features we enjoyed where the shark tunnel, penguin parade, and dive show. Near the end of the aquarium there's a little food court. Prices are high but that was that was be expected. Its $4 just for an order of fries and $3 for a corn dog or hot dog and those where the cheapest items on the menu. Despite the prices the food was good and it was a convention place to stop for a quick bite before the long drive home since we didn't want to stop elsewhere. The whole family enjoyed being able to watch the sting rays in the giant aquarium next to the food court.

Awesome aquarium and very military friendly :) I’m not one to seek out a discount, but I’m always appreciative when it’s given. The aquarium has some excellent enclosures and the animals seem well cared for. The staff is very friendly and attentive in their jobs. Definitely a great spot for the family or anyone who loves aquatic life, there’s so much to see!!!

Incredibly beautiful! The drive up for the sunrise was long, but so worth it. It was a cold morning with a lot of wind. Definitely recommend checking temps and dress for it. A park ranger also suggested checking the webcam before going to see how clear it is. With going for sunrise that wasn't an option, but it was supposed to be a clear day and it was. The hike up is strenuous (especially with minimal coffee consumed), but manageable and there are spots to stop. You can also get some beautiful views from the parking lot of both sunrise and sunset. So happy we did this, and I highly recommend! Lots of places to stop for views or hikes on the way up or back down.

A beautiful drive! We had to park a ways away for it was very crowded. Nice hike on a paved path. There are several benches along the way. Awesome view from the top.

We went here on a gloomy, rainy day without any expectations to see a sunset. There were a couple of warnings while driving from Gatlinburg about dense fog in the area. And that fog was visible from Clingmans. There is a steep uphill climb from the parking lot to the start of the dome which might not be easy for everyone. When we went there was absolutely no one on the trail, no one in the parking lot and it was drizzling. If you’re here to see the sunset, plan to be in the parking 40 minutes in advance to enjoy best views and give enough time to climb half a mile uphill.

Mingo Falls

120-ft. waterfall on the Cherokee Indian Reservation reached by a 0.4-mi. access trail.

Slide 1 of 6

Mingo Falls is not technically within the park but rather on the Cherokee Indian Reservation. However, it is still very close and worth the visit, as it is one of the tallest and most stunning waterfalls in the Southern Appalachians. To access the trail leading to the falls, drive south from the Oconalufteee Visitor Center on US-441 toward Cherokee and take the second left onto Big Cove Rd.

Mingo Falls is just outside the park on the Cherokee Indian Reservation. It is 120 feet tall and is one of the most spectacular Great Smoky Mountains National Park waterfalls. The hike to the falls has 161 steep steps to the viewing bridge that crosses directly in front of the falls.

At 120 feet tall, the waterfall is one of the tallest and most spectacular in the southern Appalachians. The trail to the base of the falls is very steep, but well worth the effort.

One of the best kept secrets of the Smokey Mountain National Park. We enjoyed Mingo Falls. We loved climbing the 200+ stairs leading to the beautiful view. Hopefully we will visit again.

Beautiful falls, short but very steep stairs - I live on a steep hill and average 25,000 steps a day, but stairs are hard for me . I saw people of all ages and abilities do it though, and everyone was glad they did. It was fairly crowded but parking was easy and the ride to was gorgeous as well. I would imagine after a rain it would be INSANELY flowing; when I went it hadn’t rained in a while and it was still magnificent.

There is no such thing as a bad time to visit Mingo Falls. It is absolutely beautiful in high water, low water, and all of the Seasons. I visited the waterfall during the Winter season while snow was still on the ground and I needed microspikes for the ice on the stairs. This is one of the easiest waterfalls to access in the Smokies area. The trail is mainly a bunch of stairs that are taken good care of by the Cherokee Nation. They deserve to be prideful of having this beauty on their land. Recommend it for all age groups.

Great stop! If you aren't a big hiker, just want to see everything...a must stop! 1st, just wanted to get a cancelation stamped, but this place had a nice walking trail n beautiful river view, so stayed longer and had a quick picnic here while enjoying the view. Didn't walk the trail, but sure it would be worth it too. There's more stuff to see outside. Was just a little breezy for me.

I love this visitor center. We have been a few times. There is a trail there that is one of the only 2 trails in the GSMNP where dogs can go. We used to take our pup there (RIP Lucy), but now we go to see the Elk and walk the trail. Our cat loved it too.

Great selection of souvenirs within, decent prices though we did spend a lot all together. Staff at the visitor center were friendly until we declined to purchase a national park pass, then became excessively rude. Very beautiful visitors center with plenty to do around.

We love it. We live about 60 miles away and go quit often. Run very professional, could have free drinks but other that, very classy.

The resort is beautiful. The staff is phenomenal. The casino is huge and very welcoming. The drinks at the bar were amazing. However we had a loud, almost banging type of noise that wouldn't stop coming from the vent in our room and we couldn't sleep. I had to turn the TV on to drown out the noise and I literally only slept 3 hours. The room was very nice, the bed was extremely comfortable. If it wasn't for the constant noise and lack of sleep, my review would have been a lot more positive. It took over 30 minutes for the valet parking to return our car. My only other complaint is food. You couldn't eat anywhere at the resort without a reservation, there was absolutely no walk in restaurants available and all to go orders were stopped early. It was still a very beautiful place.

Great place to relax and have fun. Good selection of food also. Valet parking is offered for guests that stay in the hotel for free. The rooms are really nice. The games are really fun. Drinks are a little expensive, but hay, you're here to have fun. The staff is really friendly. And don't forget to tip your waiting and cleaning staff!!!

Santa'sLand Fun Park & Zoo

Amusement park

Water & Amusement Parks

Theme Parks

Year-round Santa Claus-themed park with rides, a gift shop, a zoo & paddle boating in a lake.

Slide 1 of 5

Every day from mid May to the end of October, Santa’s Land provides an ideal getaway or families with everything you need to keep the kids smiling. Feed the black bears, ride as many of their attractions as you like, and sample a selection of carnival treats such as Funnel Cake. Thrill-seekers may be a little disappointed by the range of rides, but for families with small children, this park has everything to keep the youngsters happy.

Santa’s Land Fun Park and Zoo is located in Jackson County, North Carolina. If you are traveling with kids, this is one of the coolest things to do in Cherokee NC with kids as everything is tailored to little ones!. They can sit on Santa’s lap, yes, even in the summer months.

It was an excellent experience that all of the family members enjoyed. We saw several types of animals at the zoo. We enjoyed the paddleboat. We also loved the food and the rides. The employees were very interesting.

It kept the kids entertained and the staff were friendly. Other than that it seemed mostly run down. The game room was closed, only two people were working at the only food place and everything just seemed dated. The animals appeared to be well cared for though. Overall if you have kids under the age of 10 you can spend well over a half a day here.

Great little park (3hrs) to do it all. Real zoo feel. Actually sat in a very real Santa lap and took a picture. Rides too, best for all who believe in Santa older kids would be bored. Hamburgers And french fries or hotdogs and nachos ice cream cones snowcones boat ride this train rides

Waterrock Knob

Mountain peak

Nature & Parks

Mountains

Highest peak in the Plott Balsams, with a visitor center, picnic tables, an overlook & hiking trail.

Slide 1 of 3

Was recommended a great location for a sunset picture and they were correct. You can have almost a 360 view and I was not there at sunrise but I be that would be good too. They have outdoor toilets. the "visitor center" was closed when I was there because it at after 7PM. Nice hike trail up the little mountain off the parking lost.

This place was pretty cool. Perfect weather to visit, awesome views. The trail is paved halfway and it is steep. Be prepared to keep going through rocky terrain to the top. You’ll be rewarded with awesome views. The place crash is slightly to the left side and it is through roots and rocks. Bring shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. It is about half a mile after the top of Waterrock.

The parking is very ample at the visitor center, and there are about four family “bathrooms” (literally a solid structure, with a toilet inside over a chemical tank, like a portajohn), which had hand sanitizer. The hike (about 0.5 miles from visitor center to peak) is not easy, but not difficult. The most challenging aspect is the climb. Over the course of 0.5 miles from the beginning of the trail to the peak of Waterrock Knob (~550’, going from about 5800’ to 6350’). The trail starts off paved, and eventually, (after the viewing area about 0.2 miles up the trail) becomes a maintained, but not quite paved trail (there are log segments, stones, and some drainage emplaced to help make the trail more traversable). In the winter, portions of the trail can freeze, making it a bit more challenging. The view from the top is nice, and it has some areas where you can take great pictures of the surrounding mountains and valley. There is a trail, right before reaching to the top that apparently leads to the airplane crash site (there is a blue marking on a rock prior to the last turn just before the top, and there are yellow marks along the trees going down that trail), but, getting there near sunset, I was unwilling to risk traipsing through unknown woods unprepared for more than a cursory investigation.
