We will be driving fromHouston to San Antonio on Wednesday to visit friends. We've heard we need to stop in Luling and go to Buc-ee's. Any other suggestions of things to do or see? A place for lunch? We will be staying in San Antonio for 4 days, and our friends will be showing us around, so we aren't in a hurry to get there. We're coming from Indiana, and my husband and son have never been to TX. So really we are up for anything. It can be obscure (I saw something about the world's largest pecan?), or maybe some beautiful TX scenery? Any historical sights? Thanks!

Buc-ees's is nothing more than a big truck stop. They have okay food but not a place to sit and eat. Several others in this forum just love it - so this is just my opinion. Luling has some really good BBQ, I would go to them for a better meal. I would just make a non -stop to SA.San Antonio and surrounding areas has enough and more for four days.

Buc-ees is the epitome of crass commercialism for the masses - and that's what makes it so great! There prices are 25% higher, but the store is immaculate! And where else are you going to find Beaver Nuggets, "Peace Love and Beaver" T-Shirts, and a squashed penny machine plus tasty treats like dried sausage and kolaches. There are actually no trucks (18 wheelers) allowed.
I agree that Luling barbecue is a more authenticTexas treat, why not do both,

I'm typically pretty cynical, but Buc-ees makes me smile. I think it's worth a stop, if for nothing more than the super-clean bathrooms. If you are beer fans, Shiner is also worth a stop. You can tour the Spoetzel Brewery, which has been churning out Shiner beers for over 100 years.

BBQ lunch down the highway from Buc-ees? Two suggestions:

Since they are down the sidewalk from one another, what you could do is dine at both. Just get small plate at first one and share it for tastings. Then at second one get more and dessert.
Yelp has interesting reviews of both and here is a video of one:

You say you are in no hurry to get there. The small towns along your route are fun to "pull into". It's a matter of minutes are you are in the old timer town squares. I like to stop and look in the unique shops you will find in allTexas towns. Not just antiques, but quaint craft/gift/clothing boutique type. Then get back on the road and hit another one. They are small enough you won't use up a lot of time. Don't want to shop? Then just drive around and look at the old Texas homes. Some are awesome and again, this is not time consuming because you are just driving and looking.
Here is an example of what a small town has to offer in this Sequin brochure:

San Antonio is my favorite Texas city. You will have a great time and weather is perfect for sightseeing now that these cold fronts are hitting us. Enjoy!

If you want to see the realTexas take Hwy 90, instead of IH 10. Painted Churches, Shiner Brewery, Papes pecan shop, palmetto state park, you can easy zip up to city market for BBQ and head right back hwy 90.

I second the recommendations of City Market BBQ in Luling and the Spoetzel Brewery in ShinerTexas. These are great local places, off the beaten path.
As far as Buc-ees, you should definitely stop there and enjoy the experience. Get some snack, but don't eat lunch here.
