Itching after laser hair removal Reddit

this is my fourth session and i had the same reaction after my third session as well. my legs were kinda bumpy and there was a lot of redness but now it's looking brownish around the follicles and my skin is itchy/hot to the touch. my session was on Saturday. has my technician been burning me?

level 1

Could be folliculitis. I had similar symptoms and went to my dermatologist to confirm, they prescribed me a steroid cream to help ease the itching and swelling.

Edit: To add, folliculitis is normal and can happen regardless of the quality of the session. I have very sensitive skin so it wasn't surprising to experience such a flare up.

my skin is very sensitive too so i think this is normal and tbh itching last time was so bad i had to take painkillers to be able to go through the day. this time it's just the discoloration that's concerning me and the mild itchiness (it's bearable) can you tell me what steroid cream did you use?

level 1

Do you have yellow spots too? I’m in the same boat after my second session, and idk what to do. I have yellow spots and some mild itching right now, but immediately after my session last week, I got really bumpy skin

Let me know if it heals!

level 2

yes!! i have yellowish spots as well and i had them on my third session. honestly i just alternated between mebo (burn cream) and betaderm (anti inflammatory cream) and tried to stay away from direct heat exposure. the skin tone will go back to normal because this happened to me last time as well and it took about a week or so. it's just the itching that is awful because it's intense but try not to scratch because they say it causes scarring.

I just had my second session and my leg itched already at the clinic. When I asked they told me it was normal. That this was normal with laser and had something with protein building up and being a sign of having a good session. Would be great if someone else confirms this.

level 2

honestly idk im trying to wait it out this time and next month i will change my esthetician and see if that makes any difference

level 1

the same thing happens to me after my sessions but I've found that taking ibuprofen right after the session is done helps a lot

level 2

im currently living on ibuprofen

You should call your clinic and let them know what happened. Itching, bumps, and overall inflammation after certain laser treatments can be normal and expected. But the practice treating you is the best place to know how to help you so your skin isn’t permanently damaged.

level 2

i called and they told me to use the same creams and wait it out. they didn't say if it's normal or not but honestly i think the esthetician overdid it and im changing her next month.

I’ve been doing home IPL a couple months and the itchy bumps seem to be getting worse now. It only lasts a couple days, but it’s like I got a swarm of mosquito bites on my lower legs. 😬

I do have some skin sensitivities (even a “sun allergy”) so maybe I should turn it down a notch?

I’ve tried hydrocortisone cream, but it doesn’t seem to be working that great… what am I to do? I can’t sleep like this. lol

Hey everyone! Sorry if this is the wrong forum but I’m needing some advice. I recently purchased an at home ipl machine and it’s working GREAT! That being said I’ve only been able to use it on my legs twice because I get the most intensely itchy hives afterwards. I’ve read that this is a relatively common side effect for ipl but also most posts go on to say they disappear any where from a few hours to a day or two. If only!!! Mine last for days. I’d say closer to a week or week and a half.

All that being said...what is your guys advice? I currently use my ipl on the highest setting for my face and underarms (where I’ve had 0 hives) and the second to highest setting on my legs.

Thanks in advance from a very itchy lady!

Try 1% hydrocortisone and leave a bag of ice on it

level 1

prescription hydrocortisone cream with higher% . plus shot steroids .DONT SCRATCH IT. *wife of retired pulmonary specialist. just my 2¢, pennyt😉

Best of luck to you. That must be agony!

level 1

Take an antihistamine and keep using soothing gels. If it doesn’t go away in 72 hours, let your therapist know and consult a doctor x

level 1

Last month I had a rash in my legs (only quads), after talking with the esthetician, I used Caladryl. It only subsided after three days. I used at least 4 times a day.

level 1

I would seek medical advice from your doctor

level 1

What did your clinic say? That should be your first course of action. After that dermatologist. What machine did they use? Any creams? Looks like an allergy so you can try Benadryl and icing while you wait to see a doctor.

level 1

I agree with talk to your doctor. Or even tele-doctor as I have. Mine prescribed prednisone and an anti-itch.

level 1

I've had this before, it's a histamine reaction. It's the worst :(. You can look up posts on that issue here. I found that taking an antihistamine right before the session helps a lot (like Claritin or Benadryl). I also talked to a tech once about it who said that too much heat after the session can trigger it, so make sure you don't sweat or otherwise heat the area for at LEAST 24 hours.

Thanks thus might be it the day u got it done it was extremely hot.

Is itching after laser hair removal normal?

Your skin may feel a little itchy after your treatment, but it's important to resist the urge to scratch. Because your skin is very sensitive, even a little scratching can irritate it and cause it to become red and inflamed.

How long does itching last after laser removal?

You should find that the skin calms down within a week of the treatment. If however the itching persists consult with your laser practitioner or pharmacist.

How do you stop the itching after laser hair removal?

Benadryl may be taken to help relieve the itchiness. Do not use any other hair removal methods or products on the treated area during the course of your laser treatments (tweezing, waxing and depilatories), as it will prevent you from achieving your best results.

Why is my skin bumpy and itchy after laser hair removal?

You may experience small red bumps around the hair follicle. This is normal and expected. Do not pick, rub or scratch these until they have cleared. Your skin overall may be sensitive for several days following your laser hair removal treatment.
