Is the new Batmobile a Camaro?

The highly anticipated new Batman movie, fittingly called “The Batman,” has taken over theatres. While many were anxiously awaiting Robert Pattinson’s performance as the Caped Crusader, car enthusiasts have been waiting for the new Batmobile – and this movie did not disappoint.

Long gone are the lite-up George Clooney car and the Christian Bale tank, aka the Tumbler; this is a mean machine seemingly out of Mad Maxx or a Zombie apocalypse flick. But what is it? This question has plagued the internet since audiences were given a few glimpses in trailers over the past year. Well, everyone got it right and wrong.

The guesses have been a Dodge Charger, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, etc., but it’s none of them, or perhaps all of them. Director Matt Reeves made this version of Bruce Wayne a big fan of the Art of Gears; yes, he is a gear head. However, this young Bruce doesn’t let the butler, Alfred, have all the fun in the Batcave. No, he has some mechanic flare and seems to know a thing or two about fabrication. When you mix those skills with a bit of a tortured, depressed character living in a dystopia, evil world, you get this beast of a Batmobile.

Batman’s 2022 Ride has Elements of the 1960 Version

Behind the movie magic, there were four of these built for the film, and they were all fabricated from the ground up. So there are parts, and inspiration from all of those muscle cars speculated to be the new ride. But there is also a call back to the most iconic Batmobile of all time, the Adam West-driven Futura from the 1960s TV show. Take a close look at the back end, and those curves get raised a little higher, resembling the bat-like wings from the 60s version. Also, when it starts up, there are red lights on the front that mimic the red pinstriping on the Futura.

Well only a very small group of very lucky people will ever drive this dream machine, it has been added to the popular Rocket League video game. Now we can all take it for a spin.

Finally, as car lovers, we love the chase scenes on the big screen. Reeves pulls off one of the best chase scenes produced in a long time. The movie magic utilized all of the cars, including a special jump-mobile that weighed significantly less than the others and had additional suspension components. In addition, another car was used that positioned a stunt driver operating the car from on top of the roof while Pattison was inside. Best of all, this scene is real, no CGI.

As the owner of a Charger, I see the Mopar muscle when I look at it, but I hear others who may own or love Camaros or Mustangs claim they see those cars. Maybe that is the point; it’s the perfect blend of the best American muscle produced. Batman brings all car lovers together to cheer on the Caped Crusader as he hunts down villains and saves Gotham – in a sweet ride.
