I need to get fromMilwaukee, WI to Knoxville, TN. Looking into flights that fit my travel times, I can leave fly out of Milwaukee and connect at O'Hare, or just drive to O'Hare. Any suggestions?

My only problem with getting to O'Hare is that it is a 9:30pm flight and I won't be leaving Milwaukee until 5:00pm, and am a bit worried about traffic in Chicago.

Thanks.

The least hassle might be to take the train fromMilwaukee to Chicago, then transfer to O'Hare from downtown. This option would take about two hours total, more or less.

If you drive, the traffic will be tight leaving Milwaukee at 5 p.m. with a construction slowdown right at the state line, but you'd be okay driving into O'Hare on I-294, which doesn't take you into the city at all. Plan for about a 90-minute drive, and add the time to return your rental or park in long-term parking. There are shuttles in the lots to take you to the "people mover," which will get you to your terminal. You're probably looking at about 2.5 hours for this option, more or less.

You could take the Amtrak as far as Glenview and then a cab from there. Saw someone doing that last year when I was returning fromMilwaukee.

One thing to consider, though, is how you would return to Milwaukee.

Another option, if you don't want to drive, would be the airport bus that goes directly to O'Hare from downtown Milwaukee.

When you consider waiting for trains and walking betweenUnion Station and CTA stations in Chicago, it will take you well over 2 hours to get from Milwaukee to O'Hare thru downtown Chicago via trains. If your schedule allows, you could save time by taking Metra from Union Station to O'Hare Transfer-but those trains do not run frequently. Also, count on 1/2 hour, not 1 hour, to get from remote parking to the terminals at O'Hare.

If you leave fromMilwaukee at 5 pm, I don't think you would have a problem making a 9:30 pm flight. Basically you have three hours to get to the airport, and unless there is some extreme weather issues or some type of major crash you would be fine. I am assuming you are from the Milwaukee area. If you take the train or the bus, you have to make sure that when you return you will be able to get back to Milwaukee, as neither of them may be available when you land. So check the schedules carefully.

We've taken the Coach bus several times from Kenosha and maybe just lucky, but always on time. They're big and very comfortable and stop at everyairline. I'd take the earliest one possible in case there's a lot of traffic, and buy your tickets ahead so not to hold up line getting on the bus. It's really a stress free way to get to OHare.

Go to Amtrak.com and download the Hiawatha Service schedule. FromUnion Station in Chicago, walk to the Clinton Street (two blocks) CTA station on the Blue Line train to O'Hare airport (last stop).

You'll have to look at the time/cost factor when deciding this. Just like people do when deciding to stay in the burbs or city proper.

If one thing goes wrong with theflight from MKE, then the airline will be responsbile to get you out of there. If anything goes wrong with other transports to ORD and you miss your flight, you'll be stuck paying for another ticket. (usually)
