I’ve recently gotten into playing Pokémon ROM hacks and started wanting to play this one. I have no experience with ROM hacks prior to this so I really have no idea how to do it. Is there a step by step guide someone can give for what I have to do to get from an emulator with fire red to the Pokémon unbound game?

Download Unbound zip file from PokéCommunity. Follow this link: //www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=382178
Get the patch file ("Pokemon Unbound Official.ups") from there.
In parallel, download a clean FireRed Squirrels rom if you don't have any. I cannot
give a link where to download this, so use a Google search to find it.
Then, patch them using Rom Patcher JS: //www.marcrobledo.com/RomPatcher.js/
Here, give the clean FireRed Squirrels file to the "ROM file:" field, and the official patch file to the "Patch file:" field. Then, after clicking the "Apply patch" button below, you can download the 32 MB gba file to your Mac.
Also download the latest mGBA for Mac, I don't remember exactly which site to find; so you can use Google search to find a download link for this also. With the mGBA and the Unbound gba file in hand, you can basically play it.
For the first time you try to open mGBA, Mac may not allow opening it; so use kntrl + click on mouse and select "Open", and in the popup select "Yes". Then load the rom you recently downloaded (whichever name you give; that's the Unbound rom) and play.

Good video, but I will still fear that even with this video someone will post or ask "I can't patch this, help pls!!!!" or demand "I suck at patching, I want this prepatched".
Also, in my opinion Rom Patcher JS is infinitely more useful than NUPS.exe file for those on PC or Mac users like me who does not use Windows. This site is quite easy to use; just give the Squirrels FireRed rom to "ROM file:" field, and Unbound patch file to the "Patch file:" field and click "Apply patch" button. Then, download the new .gba file to the PC under any folder you want.

Because it's not. Look at the file extension and you'll see it's a UPS not a GBA.
No Romhack is distributed as a GBA game officially because that's against the piracy laws. So they are distributed as patches to be applied in the base games they were made for. If you ever get a Romhacks as a GBA straight off that's because it's not the official source and a random person put it on internet on those sites despite it being illegal.
In case of Unbound it's 1636 Fire Red Squirrels. Find that ROM, extract it and patch it with that UPS file on a patcher program like NUPS. There are plenty of videos about patching so tis easy to find how to do it but it's very simple

I took the classic yet absolutely idiotic approach of just over leveling my starter, then got absolutely fucked up the ass by the elite 4 when I realized they scaled to my highest mon lol

Talk to everyone, and actually read it btw, sometimes they give good information/hints at hidden items/pokemon.
Play with level caps on in the options menu for Exp Share. Enemies scale to your team so overlevelling can fuck you if you're not careful.

Build your team in such a Way that you can easily counter Dark, Ghost, Fairy, Ground and Dragon types

I love how all the types you need to be aware of either have an immunity or you put and before them

Have fun! Brace yourself for a (almost overwhelming amount) lot of plot explanation and lore dumping. Save before boss battles. It’s a great game!

If you are looking for a certain wild Pokemon, remember that you have a Dexnav to search for it in it's location.

GET HARIYAMA WITH THICK FAT! Early-Mid game MONSTER, access to fake out, VERY HIGH attack and HP, force palm paralysis saved me a few million times, and it took out legendary pokemon when my team was STRUGGLING

Save all items that you get, you never know when you might need it for a mission

Take your time each gym requires a unique team… for example the electric gym is immune to ground so just be prepared.
