Need a New Key FOB?

Changing a VW Key FOB Battery

First, you’ll need a CR2032 3V battery. These are circular batteries that look like small discs. You’ll also need a tool to pry out the battery, like a small flat-blade screwdriver.

  1. Flip open the key by pressing the metal button.
  2. Locate battery panel of key, right beneath the Volkswagen logo.
  3. From the now-empty key cavity, push up on the panel.
  4. Remove battery panel.
  5. Locate battery.
  6. Insert prying tool into slot, apply force.
  7. Set aside old battery.
  8. Place new battery in slot with + symbol facing you.
  9. Snap new battery into place.
  10. Replace battery panel.
  11. Close key.
  12. Enjoy your fully-functioning key FOB!

To fix this problem yourself with require some time, patience, a flat head screwdriver and a CR2032 replacement battery. Here is how to do it:

  1. Press the button on the key to flip out the metal key – activate the switchblade.
  2. Place the key fob on a flat surface and find the side with the VW logo facing up. Rotate it to get the metal key sticking out the right and the channel, where the key fits, facing you.
  3. Next, closely inspect the channel and find where it is vertically split.
  4. Grab the flat head screwdriver; insert it into the split and turn in order to pry open the key fob, creating two pieces. The battery compartment should be on the left side and the key on the right.
  5. Taking the same screwdriver, pry open the battery compartment to get to the battery.
  6. Replace the battery with the CR20232 with the + side facing down.
  7. Lastly, put the key fob back together by reversing these steps.

How do I separate VW key fob?

Release the emergency key on your newer Volkswagen key fob. On your key fob, locate a small seam where you can begin separating the key fob cover with your fingers. Once you have a large enough space, carefully use your pry tool or screwdriver to slowly separate the two parts.
