Required Materials to Breed Sheep

In Minecraft, these are the materials you can use to breed sheep:

Steps to Breed Sheep

1. Find Two Sheep

First, you will need to find two sheep to breed.

If you are having trouble finding sheep, you can summon a sheep using a cheat or you can use a spawn egg.

Your sheep will need to be close together when breeding, so we have built a fence to keep our two sheep from running away.

2. Use the Wheat

Next, with the wheat selected in your hot bar, you will need to feed the wheat to each of the sheep, one at a time.

The game control to use/feed the wheat to the sheep depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), right click on the sheep one at a time.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the sheep one at a time.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Wii U, press the ZL button on the gamepad.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press the ZL button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, right click on the sheep one at a time.
  • For Education Edition, right click on the sheep one at a time.

As you feed the wheat to the sheep, you will see red hearts appear over their heads. Each of these sheep is entering love mode.

Once you have fed both sheep, they will turn to each other and red hearts will continue to appear over their heads.

After a moment, the red hearts will disappear and a cute baby sheep (lamb) will be standing next to its parents. In most cases, the baby sheep will be the color of one of its parents. However, if the parents were compatible colors, the baby will be a combination of the color of its parents.

In this example, the parents were white and light gray. These are not compatible colors, so the baby sheep is the color of one of its parents. In this case, the baby sheep is light gray.

Let's explain further what we mean by compatible colors when breeding sheep in Minecraft.

Breeding Different Colored Sheep

If you breed together two adult sheep that are compatible colors, you can make a different colored baby sheep.

Orange Baby Sheep

To make an orange baby sheep, you would breed 2 adult sheep that were dyed with red dye and yellow dye.

Purple Baby Sheep

To make a purple baby sheep, you would breed 2 adult sheep that were dyed with red dye and blue dye.

You can have fun dying your sheep and breeding all sorts of different colors, but you must use compatible colors to breed different colored sheep.

Compatible Colors for Breeding Sheep

Here is a list of the compatible colors for breeding different colored baby sheep in Minecraft:
