OMG! A friend of mine just texted me saying her new stylist is adamant about leaving her relaxer in her hair for 30-40 minutes. This "stylist" says this new trend of leaving relaxer in for at least 30 minutes will give her bone straight results. My friend is afraid to say anything and now she's texting me that her head is on "fire". I told her to try and rinse that ish out right now and leave! omg.

You don't need to leave a relaxer in that long, if her stylist knew how to work the relaxer in as she's applying it, it would only 15-20 min tops. Your friend hair and scalp are about to be damaged.

What kind of relaxer is she using? She must be stretching for months and using a no lye relaxer to need all of that!
She need to hop on that Mizani. I will say that I gave myself a relaxer Saturday and some of my new growth still visible

Why is she sitting there getting chemical burns? It's her head. Any good stylist would wash that shit out instead of letting their client suffer chemical burns. Your friend better learn to open her mouth.

Hell naw. Your scalp and hair should not be frying like that, that's why there's a science behind these things.

I've never had to leave a relaxer in for 30 minutes! Even when I was using the kiddy perms, no-lye relaxers. The most is 10 tops!
Tell your friend to use another beautician before she loses hair!

Fellow OP, tell your friend to never go back to that stylist again. Anytime there is any sort of extensive burning, it is taking your hair out and this is coming from someone that is textlaxed. I don't leave the relaxer in longer than what the box says and that is 8-10 minutes, lol. If I want bone straight hair, I can flatiron maybe a few days later, but chemicals are so bad to let them stay in that long. I don't even use heat in my hair at all, but if I did, it would be to get a bone straight hair look.

30-40 minutes?!?
See, that's why it's important to know your own hair and to research proper hair care. You might be inclined to think that because a person's a professional stylist, has the experience, they would know better than your own judgement. But I've heard enough salon horror stories to know that's not always the case.
When in doubt, don't.

yea straight fall out. I used to be scared to speak up but if I ever went back to a salon I would not let them run all over me. You gone do what I say, cut what I want or I'm not paying. And I will be faced to the mirror and if IF I let you trim I will be holding a mirror in my hands as well.

When I use to self relax with kiddie perm, longest I would leave it in is 7-10 minutes and my hair would be bone straight.
30-40 minutes is a force unless her hair is super, super nappy. Even then Black hair tends to be fragile and the point of relaxer is to relax the kinks and curls, not give bone straight hair.
Your friend is an idiot though. She's had relaxer done before so she should know the new stylist is wack.

Her scalp is going to be fried as all hell.
15-20 mins tops. That's all you really need. You're trying to relax the curl pattern, not kill it completely. A flat ironing would get it as straight a she wants it later.

She should never go back to that "stylist". It makes no sense for you to leave a relaxer in that long. OP did she say why the stylist was mad at her? Your friend needs to be made at her and herself. If you are paying for a service you need to speak up. She could get bad chemical burns.

I see so many problems with this issue. First, did you ask your buddy did she just recently wash her hair or have she been scratching her scalp before she got the perm. Now if she scratching her hair before her appt damn right her scalp is going to be on fire. Thats a big nono.
Second, The hairstylist did she used a protective base on her scalp and did she consult her before the perm. The hairstylist should had ask her have she been scratching her scalp in the last 6 hours before she came and got a perm.
She didn't have to leave the perm in for a extra 30 min if she knew how to straighten the hair while she was working the perm in. Damn just take the back of a comb, lay it flat to work the new growth of hair to make it straight.
Also your buddy should had been paying attention to what kind of perm she was putting in her hair. Maybe the perm was to strong for her hair texture.

I can't speak for your friend but I perm my hair myself and from start to first rinse typically an hour passes. I used to get sores on my scalp .Anywho my hair started breaking and my ends are all fucked up so from now on I'm going to the salon so they can properly relax my hair and trim my ends.I ain't perming my own hair anymore fuck that ill pay the 35How long should I leave relaxer on hair?
What happens when you leave relaxer in too long?
How long after a relaxer can I wash my hair?
Do relaxers weaken hair?
