Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Lieutenants

Naval Battles return in full glory in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and this time around players need to spend some time while selecting their crew especially the Lieutenants.

Lieutenants are special members of your naval crew in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey as they grant players special perks while active. Only four of them can be used at one time means having the best of the Lieutenants is important if you are looking to make the best of your naval crew.

By default players can only have one active Lieutenant, however, this number can be increased to 4 by upgrading the Ship’s Hull. Our Lieutenants Guide will help you find and acquire the best Lieutenants in the game so that you can fully enjoy your naval experience.

Where To Find The Best Lieutenants
Players can recruit Lieutenants by meeting with NPCs that they meet during side quests, main story or by defeating bounty hunters. Let me give you a general explanation on how you can recruit best Lieutenants in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey before I explain how to explain specific Lieutenants in the game.

Find a camp or a fort that is yet to be cleared by you and it would be best if it is a military camp and region fort. The reason why you are going to a camp is that sometimes Legendary Captain which you can recruit as a Lieutenant.

Mark the captain, defeat him and then recruit him as your Lieutenant and remember don’t kill the captain otherwise he/she won’t be of any use to you.

Players can also recruit mercenaries by going into combat with them defeating them but not killing them and then recruit them as a Lieutenant.

Special Lieutenants – Rare
As the name suggests, special Lieutenants offer more advantages to your Naval crew then the regular ones and there are three types of Special Lieutenants namely: Rare, Legendary and Epic.

In our guide, we will help you find these special Lieutenants along with how to recruit them.

Gelon: This special Lieutenant can be acquired by just completing the Crewless side quest.

Tekton: Complete the “A Pirate Life” side quest and Tekton will become available as a Lieutenant on your Naval crew.

Special Lieutenants – Legendary
Legendary Lieutenants offer better perks than the rare ones, however, they are also hard to find. The following are the Legendary Lieutenants that players can use on their Naval crew.

Evie: This Legendary Lieutenant can be acquired by purchasing it from the Ubisoft Club.

Special Lieutenants – Epic
Epic Lieutenants are hard to find and compared to the rare ones, these offer significant perks that will help players significantly in their Naval experience.

Odessa: To acquire this Epic Lieutenant, players need to complete a string of side quests. Start with the “A Small Odyssey” side quest and follow it up with the side quests that pop up.

That is all for our Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Lieutenants Guide. This is a work in progress and we will update it as soon as we find more during our playthrough of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey Wiki

Alexios and Kassandra are always on the lookout for skilled Special Lieutenants to join the Adrestia, and most foes can be recruited into service for the right price. Uncovering the best crew members in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey isn’t easy though, so we’re here to help you assemble the saltiest band of sailors to ever voyage across the Aegean.

Not only are there different abilities that Special Lieutenants can have, there are four qualities of crew member that you can recruit.

Where to find the best Special Lieutenants in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

There are four types of crew member that can join the Adrestia. Common, Rare, Epic and Legendary. Common and Rare Lieutenants only have one skill, whereas Epic crew have two, and Legendary crew have three.

Legendary Lieutenants’ third skill is usually coloured gold, and comes from a different pool of skills that other rarities don’t have access to.

The only way to know what rarity level an enemy is and what skills they have is to scan them with your trusty bird chum, Ikaros. By pressing Up on the D-Pad and holding the Left Trigger to enter Stationary Mode, you can hover and scout out an area. Once you’ve tagged an enemy, keep the cursor over them and it’ll display a little portrait with their picture and their name. The colour of this portrait shows you what rarity they are: black is Common, blue is Rare, purple is Epic, and gold is Legendary. You’ll also be able to see what type of skill they have, but not the exact text.

Scanning a battlefield will allow you to pick out which people are worth recruiting to your ship. The best source of Legendary Special Lieutenants is Polemarchs from forts and Mercenaries.

To recruit an enemy, you have to knock them out rather than kill them. You can do this be sneaking up to them and pressing the left stick, but this can be difficult to do in one blow when you’re dealing with stronger adversaries. There are a few ways around this.

If you unequip all of your weapons, you will fight with just your fists - meaning that anyone you defeat will just be knocked out, not killed, so you’re free to recruit them afterwards.

Alternatively, you can fight them as you normally would with your weapons equipped, but when they’re very low on health use your Spartan Kick ability. It deals non-lethal damage, so will leave the enemy alive for you to recruit. This is the easiest way to reliably collect Special Lieutenants without faffing about in the menu unequipping stuff all the time, so make use of it - this is why we rate Spartan Kick as one of the best skills in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

Knocking out enemies so you can recruit them is also a brilliant way to gather some of the best weapons and best armor sets in Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

As well as giving your ship bonuses, your Special Lieutenants will join your boarding party when you attack a ship after you’ve destroyed its mast in battle. If a Mercenary has been giving you a particularly hard time, try knocking them out and recruiting them - it’s great fun to have your old foe fighting alongside you.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Special Lieutenants skills

There are an absolute ton of skills that crew members can have, but some are more immediately useful than others. Ship Health and Ship Armor are great ones to look out for - they’re represented by a picture of a little ship with its sails open. And since you use them alot in naval combat, Arrow Damage is another great skill to pick up - you’ll know a crew member has this if one of there skills has a picture of three arrows. All of these ones we’ve seen so far are below, including skills we’ve only seen on Legendary crew:

  • Ship Armor
  • Weak Point Creation with Javelins
  • Weak Point Creation with Arrows
  • Fire Buildup with Javelins

How to get Bayek to join your Crew in Assassin's Creed Odyssey

After starring in his own main entry to the series, the Assassin's Creed Origins protagonist Bayek is looking for work on the high seas. Not really, but if you're not too fussed about the implausibility of it all, you can add the Egyptian assassin to your crew roster.

There's not much involved in signing him up, and it can be done while you're still playing the game, as well as without using real money:

  • First, head into the pause menu.
  • Then hit right on the D-pad to open the Store.
  • Press the shoulder button four times to navigate to the ship tab.
  • Press the shoulder button five times to get to the "Ubisoft Club".
  • Bayek should be here, and purchasable for 40 coins. These are different to the Helix Credits used throughout the rest of the Store which have to be bought with real money. These coins are earned through gameplay, and can be spent freely on what you want.
  • Once you've redeemed Bayek, just head back into your game and he should be available to add to your Special Lieutenants and boarding party - such fun!

Unique Special Lieutenants

On your Odyssey, you can encounter characters in quests that once their story is resolved can join your boarding party. So far we’ve found:

  • Odessa from the A Small Odyssey quest
  • Gelon from the Crewless quest
  • Various characters can be recruited from Notice Board Quests, although they don’t always accept
  • Evie Frye is available from the Helix Store as a Ubisoft Club reward. You have to have the Master Assassin achievement to purchase her though
  • Pegasos can be bought from the Helix Store for Helix Credits

How do you recruit captains in Assassin's Creed Odyssey?

You have to knock a person out without killing them, either by beating them with your fists or using Spartan Kick to subdue them when they are low in health (though not too low or they might die). Then, when standing over them, you'll have the option of hitting ALT (on keyboard) to recruit them.
