Everything you have heard is true, these guys are exceptional. Repetetive riffs, splintered guitar feedback, moaning over-amplified vocals all wrapped up in a wind tunnel of feedback and distortion. The Velvet Underground comparisons are merited: it's as if they are trying endlessly to play Sister Ray in the style of European Son. It rocks. And it works, too. Unless you really hate anything noisy (in which case how did you pitch up here?) each track will have you humming along by the end.

The five-star rating is no spur-of-the-moment exaggeration. I think this is one of the greatest albums ever, despite it being a compilation of live tracks that were most likely recorded on a hand held tape deck. I don't give a fuck, nothing hits me like this shit. The drums and bass are always locked into a simple, repeating groove while Mizutani drenches everything in sheets of reverbed guitar noise. His vocals are delivered in a cold detached manner, delayed to infinity. Usually can't hear the other guitarist. Mom hates this shit, she's always like "If you're going to sleep on my couch you need to turn that crap down! I know you're high!" Mom doesn't get it.

You know you're getting in to some seriously underground shit when the most acclaimed and well known release by the group is a bootleg! Reading about this band they almost seemed too good to be true- a Japanese psychedelic noise rock group, active in the late sixties and the seventies. Sounds like the best thing ever, no? Well, I seem to have developed some kind of sixth sense. Whenever I come across a band who sound like the best thing ever, I know that when I get down to listening to them i'll be disappointed. Good examples would be Magma and Yahowa 13, not to mention about a thousand others. Upon reading about Les Rallizes Denudes, I knew that they wouldn't live up to expectations and guess what? They didn't!

Basically, the first four tracks are superb but the last two really drag the album down. "People Can Choose" and "Ice Fire" are just aimless, and dull. If those two tracks were lopped off, i'd be able to rate this higher. But alas, they must remain. That said, I was highly impressed by the ferocious "Strung Out Deeper Than The Night" and the shimmering psych ballad "Enter the Mirror". Those tracks alone make me want to check out more by this group.

It might be worth noting that these guys kinda remind me of the stuff on Throbbing Gristle's live cassettes, with the pulsing bass and the waves of noisy feedback an' all that. The main difference is Les Rallizes Denudes are much more grounded in Rock 'n' Roll than TG ever were. Oh, that's another group I knew would disappoint me - Throbbing Gristle! My sixth sense never fails...

Thank god for the bassist, or we would all be lost at sea.

The fidelity is absolutely dreadful, but the music is awesome. This is the alter to which most space rock/shoegaze bands (should) pray.

Well...I DID have a review just for Heavier Than a Death in the Family, until it was RUDELY assimilated into '77 Live.

I had given 'Heavier than...' a 0.5, so then my 0.5 went towards '77 live, which is annoying.

However...I'm (discreetly) going to change that 0.5 into a 5, so now i've given one of my favourite albums two 5 stars! Hurrah!

'77 Live. A 10 star album.

This is not the album to listen to if you were go listen to one. Bro worst versions of every track. Hahaha seriously. Pick any track on this album that was on a later album by the group and it looks so weak.

Yeah please for the love of Christ avoid this one like the plague. If you’ve only heard this album by the group. I’m so sorry for your unlucky circumstance.

But there is one thing you can do…. Listen to fucking “Double Heads: Legendary Live 1980-1981” you dingus.
