Adapted from the beloved literary classic, The Call Of The Wild vividly brings to life the story of Buck, a big-hearted dog, and the man (Harrison Ford) he must learn to trust. Buck’s life is turned upside down when he’s pulled from domestic life in California to become a member of a mail delivery sled team in the Alaskan Yukon during the 1890s.

As many know already I presume, this movie is based off of a Jack London masterpiece. The story portrayed in this motion picture has a decent handful of Jack London's favorite elements of adventure, true friendship, realism and the carnal wilderness.

Before I say anything about the movie, I must implore that anyone reading this first purchase a copy of the Novel "The Call of the Wild" before watching this movie. The Novel is rich with the elements listed above and embraces them their fullest extent. This movie is great, but it is nothing compared to the Novel. Please, please read the book first.

First thoughts of the movie
This is all my opinion so take it with a grain of salt haha

This movie is a great adaptation of the Novel, but NOT the same story. (No movie is though) I personally feel if one were to read the book first, the film would give a nostalgic feeling or appreciation for the novel. It did me at least, since I read the book in high school. This movie has key heart-tuggers as the book, but in no way like the novel.

The fact that Buck (the dog) was CGI (computer-generated-imagery. Animated for short) kind of bugged me at first, I won't lie, but as I continued watching it stopped bothering me. I quickly fell in love with the furry protagonist rather quickly. Even if he is generated by a computer haha.

I'd ultimately give this a 4 star rating.
Positive input:
1. The movie is fun adventurous and has it's elements of sadness, as should every dog's tale.
2. Excellent family movie. Not graphic and little to no profanity (None that I heard) If you have a little one in love with adventure and man's best friend, it's a must watch. I'm a single 20 year old male, but I wish this was out when I was a youngster; this would of been one of my favorites.
3. Reminded me of how valuable our Earth is and the creatures in it. There's a wonder and longing for an untamed Earth, but it also shows that the wild is indeed "wild", and demands respect (Book embraces that more so)
4. Shows that wealth isn't everything and that the love you share and receive is much more valuable.

I'd ultimately recommend this movie for those who have read the novel, or for a family night movie. As someone who has the book before, it made me want to read it again. If you're a parent and haven't read the book. After watching this with your kids, you will indeed want to!

Enjoy the movie my relatives.

Pretty good! But...wheres the rest?

Verified purchase

This movie ended with to many "loose ends". The overall movie was pretty well done. I wondered why they did not answer some of the questions in this movie until I looked it up and found out that this was part of a thirteen episode TV series that aired on Animal Planet in 2000. This movie was episode 5 in the series. I have only been able to find two of these on DVD. I would like to find the rest.

Not Jack London's Version

Verified purchase

Despite having his name over the title, this is not Jack London's Call of the Wild. This is a completely original story about a young man named Miles Challenger--not a character in the original book. The script incorporates characters and incidents from the book, but the story is totally different. However, taken on its own merits, the film is entertaining. Miles is a character young people can relate to, and the film does offer an interesting look at life up north during the Alaska gold rush. Just don't expect Jack London's story, or you will be disappointed.

Leaves you wanting more

Verified purchase

This is a very enjoyable continuation of The Call of the Wild dvd with Shane Meier. While not a true telling of the London novel these are both very good enjoyable tales for any dog lover. The biggest drawback is the ending of Foxfire makes you say "that's it? that's the end?". My husband and I were both left wanting to see more of this shortlived Animal Planet tv show. Unfortunately, we have been unable to find any dvds of the program that apparently ran from March of 2000 to June of 2000.

How to love a dog.

I love dog stories, because I've never had a large dog that gave me more love and company. I'll probably purchase many more from you. Thank you for making them available.
