5 Nights At Shrek's Hotel is an indie adventure game from developer RenderPi. In this survival horror born from a parody, you get to play as a newcomer down on his luck. You find a lodging in the meantime, owned by the popular green ogre. However, he’s not his jolly self and a mix of horror and hilarity ensues.

In its entirety, 5 Nights At Shrek's Hotel feels like a weird parody inspired by a number of games such as Five Nights at Freddy’s or Granny. In doing so, it creates a game that is both scary and funny.

Survive five nights with Shrek

In terms of premise, 5 Nights At Shrek's Hotel is far from original. It even borrows the five nights survival period used in a different video game franchise. Once you check into your hotel room, the chase soon starts. Hide in other rooms and try to outrun Shrek. Should he capture you, depending on what night you’re in, you might meet your end or get a chance to redeem yourself.

One point of contention in this game, though, is its graphics. Both the scary and the funny part comes from how it designs the main character: Shrek. There are instances where he looks like a low-quality copy while in other parts, his face is madly contorted into a nightmare-inducing image. There are also awkward references to the film franchise–and it is up to you to discover them throughout the hotel.

There are also a lot of secrets such as rooms, passageways, and items that can help you. The seemingly plain design of the hotel itself actually serves a purpose, and that is to confuse players. Repeating wallpaper patterns make it easy for players to miss narrow alleys and interactive objects. Also, a little warning for photosensitive players because of its jumpscares and sudden light flashes.

Weirdly scary, awkwardly funny

If you’re used to jumpscares and time-pressure quests, 5 Nights At Shrek's Hotel is a good entry to check out. Granted, its overall concepts are not original but by using a beloved pop culture icon, it manages to come up with a truly unsettling game experience.
